HELP! Project Intro & “Drop 0”

“Ughhhhhh…I’m so hungry! But I still have work to do, how can I order some fast food that arrives quickly? ”

“Then why don’t you try out our new drone delivery? Fast, soft and accurate!”

Hmmm… what is a drone delivery? The hungry man may ask, which also may be your question. Well, drone delivery is a new kind of delivery manner, using drones —–a kind of small unmanned plane as the transportation tool. Even though the technology of it is still waiting for more improvement, drones are already used in the daily life of several regions and countries. And now, our small group HELP! is working on developing the drone package system, mainly the drop with a package of fast food and hamburger. The purpose of this project is to experience what future life may look like and develop our creation and collaboration skills. Our group chose hamburgers as our product because a lot of people are calling food delivery almost every day, and we believe that there will be even more fast food and deliveries like this in the future.

As a member mainly responsible for the materials to use, I have my own research question: What are the best materials for the chute(canopy) that can help control the stability, speed, and accuracy? And as a group, HELP! promises our customers that their package will land at a speed 1.5meters/ second or lower, by developing the rope, size, shape, and materials of the chute.

For recording data, we did a drop 0 investigation a few days ago. The purpose of this is to record down the data of the package when it falls down from the 2nd floor in the FA space to the first floor without any protection. With this data, the group will be able to notice if there will be an improvement after we add on the chutes and protection.

Above all, the main purpose of this project is to develop skills of creation and collaboration, and also try what it may be like if these drones completely combine into people’s everyday lives. My research question is linked to the design criteria of HELP!. Soft and stable material can help control the landing speed of the box, so it is really important to consider the stability, speed, and accuracy when we start testing. For our next step, HELP! will meet together and figure out a specific procedure, limitations and the dimensions,  and write down our second blog.

“Underground” Story Blurb

It is 2050 A.D. and Zoey Sterlin is a girl who just moved above ground to Boston with her father from the Underground. It is her first time seeing the sky and she is extremely excited. Unfortunately, an unknown virus burst out suddenly and infected a considerable number of people in a short amount of time. As one of the members volunteered to find the source of the virus which comes from the Underground, Zoey faces her past 18 years which she thought she would never look back to. What secrets does the Underground hide? To have a read of my story, click here

Maths Habitat Design Team Thank You and Reflection Note

Dear Chelsea and Aaron,

Thank you for working with me on our habitat design.

One of the places where this habitat connects to my story is the 17th paragraph where Zoey (the main character) stays home and waits for her dad to arrive home. Her father and she had a discussion which led to the main problem, and so this part is very important. Thank you for helping me include this space in our project.

As a team, I’ve been impressed with our ability to work together and compromise with each other. We worked together to make up a new design, figured out the dimensions, and where rooms and furniture fit and worked on it together. That was very helpful and I really appreciate it.

On the other hand, I also hope that we could have been better at communicating and sharing the responsibilities of working on the different parts of our design. I think this is important because it will help us work and finish it quicker and more efficiently. One thing I can do is work on my part and finish it when it is my responsibility to work on it.

Sincerely,

Akina Tse.

Developing Myself As an Independent Learner

Based on my self assess on my learning assets, I noticed that one of my strengths area is my management as a thinker and researcher. I use a variety of credible sources and evidence to investigate my questions, develop my awareness and perspective on my thoughts and action. For example, I gathered several sources of information to help and support my writing on my technology proposal of social media on teenagers in Humanities class. During my researches, I learn from facts and noted them down on my computer and notebook with citing the link. I have developed my knowledge from my research and changed some of my points of view on social media.

The area that I think I would like to improve on is myself as a communicator. Even though I can share my thoughts with different people, I feel that I share less of my ideas and opinions when I am with larger group of people and listen more than I talk. Most of the time I share more and feel more comfortable with a smaller group of people, perhaps a pair or in threes, or when I am with my close friends. I would like to try to improve myself by stepping out of my comfort zone and try to speak up more in front of larger audiences.

The Girl Who Lived With Wild Dogs For Years

“Island of the Blue Dolphins” by Scott O’Dell is one of my favorite books. It is about a teenage girl named Karana who was stranded on the island where she and her tribe used to live. The other members of her tribe left the island to go to the mainland of America(the coast of California) to search for a better future to survive. Unfortunately, Karana’s younger brother Ramo was accidentally left on the island when Karana decided to swim back on her own to find Ramo. But something sadder happened days later: Ramo was killed by the attack of wild dogs. And so Karana had to search a way out her self to survive on this deserted island. Luckily, Karana saved a wild dog and cured him (which actually was also wounded by her in her revenge for Ramo) and naming it Rontu. At least she has a pal now. But living on this island for all her life isn’t the solution, she has to leave and set off for the mainland sometime. What can Karana do to survive?

How Do I Make Good Choices For Myself and My Community?

Looking back at Project Self, I learned that I have to be self-disciplined to balance between doing the right thing and having fun. For example, when I am working on a project, I sometimes get distracted by my friends. This is the time when I need to be self-disciplined and stay away from my friends for a while to finish my work first, which is the right choice. After I finish my work, then I have the free time to have fun and socialize. Another thing that I can do is to remind my friends as well that during class time, focus on the task first and then socialize when class is over, or after finishing our work.

Project Self helped me realized that sometimes making the right decision at the right time can be hard. I have to be self-disciplined about if entertaining more important or doing my work more important at the time. As I continue learning in the future, I will be aware of making the right decisions for myself and my community.

Self Reflection on Improving Myself For Better Understanding

Looking back on Project Self, I learned that understanding something takes a period of time.  For example, in maths class, I used to think that I understand calculating with negative numbers and using graphs/number lines to show my thinking and work. But as I explored more into the topic, I found out that I can still be confused or stuck with something, then I realized that I didn’t really, really understand negative numbers yet. So I started to practice my skills again and tries to improve them. Now I think that to really, really understand something, it takes time and you’ll have to remember it with practice or revise it frequently.

Project Self also makes me realize that I have improved my self on is making connections on a piece of information and another provided. I think more about the links between two or several things and connect skills and information together to improve. As I continue learning in the future, I think that I would like to improve is to improve myself on capturing the heart of a project and think about what is the core and why is it important.

Black Widow Wrist Cuff

One obstacle I successfully overcame is that I didn’t find any videos about how to make this product. So I had to figure it out myself. Mr.Layman gave me an idea about making the bullets out of toothbrush rods when I was in hesitation. It turned out better than I expected to and I am quite satisfied with my product.

If I made this product again, one thing I’d do differently is using spray paint instead of brushing. It is faster and it is also able to paint the inside and holes where the brush couldn’t reach and paint. The product I made this time has certain places were the paint fell off and some other places that had thicker layers of paint.

My greatest success through this class was I developed my creativity and learned to use materials as alternatives for the originals that weren’t available.  I used the toothbrush rods as bullets and added the velcro as an attachment since the cloth I had wasn’t big enough for covering my whole wrist.

Flamingo Cranky Contaption

From this project, my biggest success was solving the problem of the holes I drilled wrong on the bar. I added the thank you note and the ribbon to cover it. It covered the extra holes and made my cranky contraption more visually appealing. I liked it very much and thought that it was a very smart solution.

One skill I learned by making this product is using the drill. Before I didn’t know how to use the drill and didn’t know to attach and use the parts of the drill. Now I know that there are different drills for drilling different sizes of holes and on different materials. I also found out how to attach the battery on to the drill and charge it.

Overall, I think this product is successful because it is visually appealing and works quite well. The materials used for this cranky contraption is all biodegradable and sustainable as well. It looked the way I expected and quite the same the way it was drawn on the draft paper.

G6 Civilisation Spring Trip

During the spring trip we experienced in May 22nd~24th, I learned to make black paint out of charcoal, saw bamboo, and toast marshmallow and sausages. I really enjoyed making paint even though it made me very dirty because I find it very fun to smash charcoal into small bits, add water to mix it. It was very enjoyable to write and draw on stone tablets and wood, which represents the landmarks and symbol of the “Low Landers”—–our civilization. If I have to give a bit of advice to the next group that’s going on the trip, I’d say that better bring swimsuits and water shoes because there is about an 80~90% chance of falling into the water when water rafting. Overall this trip was super fun and actually, I wished for more time to stay in the woods and develop our civilization. 😀
