Experimental Pc

For my Initial Thoughts i wanted to the theme Shadow. However, there is so many limited resource so i had to change my mind to passage of time, and below is some experimental pictures i took for shadow and passage of time:

Passage of time Statement of Intent

The pictures i took in based on passage of time, where it’s about different age groups, for example from teenagers to younger adults and old man. To be more specific, from 18 year old teen, to 30 year old 40 year old, and even 60. The reason to do this is to fit the passage of time, of how people will look like when they grown older and older. So as times goes by they will look much older. And the style i wanted to take is similar to David Bailey’s where there are a Striking Black & White Contrast,High-contrast lighting with deep shadows and crisp highlights. A timeless, dramatic feel that emphasizes texture and expression.

David Bailey is a legendary British photographer whose groundbreaking work defined the visual culture of the 1960s and beyond. Known for his raw, unfiltered style, Bailey revolutionized fashion and portrait photography, capturing the essence of the “Swinging London” era with striking intimacy and energy.

Bailey became a cultural icon through his portraits of The Beatles, Mick Jagger, Twiggy, and Jean Shrimpton (his muse and frequent collaborator) 18. His 1965 exhibition, Box of Pin-Ups, featuring larger-than-life portraits of celebrities and East End gangsters like the Kray twins, cemented his reputation as a chronicler of his era 18. His influence extended beyond photography—Michelangelo Antonioni’s film Blow-Up (1966) was loosely inspired by his life 27.

Signature Style and Legacy

  • Direct and Unpretentious: Bailey’s work strips away artifice, focusing on the raw personality of his subjects 38.
  • Fashion Revolution: He redefined fashion photography with dynamic, candid shots that mirrored youth culture’s rebellion 16.
  • Multidisciplinary Artist: Beyond photography, he directed music videos (e.g., New Order), documentaries, and even painted 12.

Awards and Honors

  • Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE, 2001) 18.
  • Royal Photographic Society Centenary Medal (2005) 8.
  • Major retrospectives at London’s National Portrait Gallery and Barbican Centre 18.

Bailey’s work remains a testament to the power of photography to capture not just images, but the spirit of an age. His legacy endures as a pioneer who blurred the lines between art, fashion, and pop culture.

Passage of Time

Statement of intent.

Fong Qi Wei is a Singapore-based photographer renowned for his innovative techniques that blend time, space, and light into visually striking compositions. His work often explores the interplay of temporal and spatial dimensions, aiming to “make special” ordinary scenes through photography 1.

Signature Series: “Time Is a Dimension” and “Time in Motion”

  1. “Time Is a Dimension”:
    • This series deconstructs a single view into narrow strips, each capturing a distinct moment. By splicing these strips together, Wei creates a fragmented yet cohesive image where time unfolds spatially within one frame 1.
    • Example: A sunset might appear as layered bands of shifting colors, compressing hours into a single static image.
  2. “Time in Motion”:
    • An evolution of the above, this series animates the sliced photographs, allowing light and color to “ripple” across the frame like waves. The effect transforms static images into dynamic visual narratives 1.
    • Notable Work: “Glassy Sunset” (an animated piece showcasing the transition of light over time) 1.

Technique and Philosophy

  • Wei’s approach combines technical precision with conceptual depth. His use of sequential slicing and animation challenges traditional perceptions of photography as a medium frozen in time.
  • He emphasizes the “specialness” of mundane moments, revealing hidden patterns in natural phenomena like sunsets or urban landscapes 1.
