Science Design

Define and Inquire:

We started a new unit “Engineering Project” in our recent science class, which is a 5-session class that involves designing a product for a specific person. The following is my Padlet website to collect ideas, including my choice of objects, problems and solutions, and design inspiration.

Develop and Plan:

I initially thought of four different design ideas, but were eliminated as the size and material of the product could not be confirmed. My final product draft is a 15cm by 15cm cat “game player” that automatically moves the pattern.

Final draft design drawing:

Materials:
Cardboard/Panel, wheels, motor, Cloth, battery/wire, Fixed axis, glue.

In this whole production part, I will use circuits and motors as energy to move my products, which is also what I want to learn in this unit.

In order to make a product better in time, I made a schedule for due days:

Date To Do
2/25 first class Making the outline of the product, test the sizes.
3/1 second class Working out the electrical energy part.
3/3 third class Working out the electrical energy part, start making the pattern inside
3/7 fourth class Start putting things together.
3/9 last class Finished up, make final adjustments.

Create and Improve :

Design day 1:

I started with the entire outline, including the cardboard box on the outside, and the patterned fabric to move inside. The box is 20cm by 20cm square, and the patterned fabric is about 35cm by 12cm.

Design day 2 and 3:

After I finished the outline, I started to make and adjust the parameters of the electricity in about two classes. Here is my test on the motor and electricity:

At here I think my progress is consistent with the schedule I do. But I quickly found that my motor system was starting to get very hot, and I have come to understand that this is because I made the energy move in a circle. The energy has nowhere to go, and the whole system starts to get hot.

Design day 4:

When putting them together on day four, I found that the patterned fabric was so heavy that I couldn’t move it with the power of my existing motor. Although I then tried using two batteries, it still didn’t work. After I understood the reason, I decided to change the energy transfer from electric to manual. So I came up with this:

Reflect and share:

Final product

In the whole process of my production, the biggest trouble is that the circuit system I made for the two classes cannot move with the patterned fabric because the motor has insufficient power. This led to my decision to switch the energy transfer from electric to manual, which made my product look incomplete. But if I ever get a chance to improve my product in the future, I won’t make my mistake again, and I hope it can be a self-moving cat game.

Lamp Design

Inspiration Design Ideas, A padlet I made for me to record Ideas.

Made with Padlet

User for the lamp:

An 8-year-old girl, that interested in science, dance,  poetry, and art.

Sketches:

I deiced to make a lamp based on her interest in science and art. This is an atom model, I made the portions and neutrons to light and electrons around it. Stitches and cardboard Model below:

What works well in my design are,  I have a plan for my lamp, mostly will about atoms and partcies ( based on Zoe’s intersted). But, what are not wroking so well are my sizes and materials of lamp. I am not sure about the size becuase i don’t know the size of the lightballs will be, also the materials that can make my atom model more real.

Design Challenge

Design Problem is:

The MSHS Design Center in ISB is a wonderful space, and we are all appreciative of the ways it enhances our learning of Design, Engineering, and Visual Arts! However, the open plan of the space has created some challenges for teachers and students, and we are looking for creative solutions to the problems of:             -acoustic insulation: There is too much disruption caused when multiple classes are being held in the open areas.
-visual distraction: When multiple groups of students or teachers are active in the area it can be difficult to focus.

Design Challenge

The idea came from and making:

The above is the poster I made for this design challenge. My idea mainly comes from the blue partition in the school cafeteria, which is the “separation wall” for exams. From my model (cardboard model) the poster, I can see a retractable partition board, and it can divide a large classroom into two small studios from the middle. This also solves the problem of noisy work in large areas. Then, from the material of the isolation board I chose this time, one board is a whiteboard (for teachers and students to teach and record), and the other is glass, which not only blocks the sound but also has a sense of perspective.

Thesis on “On the Sidewalk Bleeding”

The main character Andy, in Evan Hunter’s short story entitled “On the Sidewalk Bleeding” initially believes that his identity, a Royal can make him powerful and Protected. But later he understands this identity are making he died, and no-one could help him also because of his identity. His changing understanding is revealed through the use of “He had known excruciating pain when the knife had torn across his body. He had heard the voice saying, ‘That’s for you Royal!'”, Freddie stood up, he looked at Andy again, and then mumbled, ‘I’m sorry.'” .

Helena’ s Day

This is a character called “Helena” from A Midsummer Night Dream by William Shakespeare( MSND 1.1 ), I choose character because she are very “lovesick” very so in love to Demetrius, that she can do anything for him. Because Helena are so lovesick, crazy, and she have a yellow hair, so I pick the image by this.

Reflection-Ancient Mesopotamia

Day One Simulation Reflection-Ancient Mesopotamia.

During the activity, I personally o trade with others and crate the laws. As a group, we divided the work load up by: at first, we all crate the laws and then some people go to crate the language for trade, and trade what we need to do for this activity.

Our biggest accomplishment as a civilization was, we use to trade with anthers, and our law is if you kill someone you will get kill or go to for many years. Our weakest point as a civilization was to crate our law and try to trade with anthers, but not to spiking. If I could do this activity again, I would change to we all do the things tighter.
