The Paper Menagerie

In Kevin Liu’s short story “Paper Menagerie,” Jack initially embraces and cherishes his Chinese culture. However, his acceptance of Chinese culture changes as the story progresses. Jack later stopped accepting all aspects of his Chinese culture and desperately desired to fit into the western setting. His changing identity is revealed through the use of symbolism, settings, and characterization.

English: Start of Year Reflection

As I enter high school, I think it would be important to reflect on my strength and weaknesses as an English student and learner. One of my strengths as a writer would be my ability to organize and arrange an outline efficiently. I think this is important because it can help me start an essay or paragraph more efficiently. Ultimately making me become more productive and time conservative. I think that a weakness that I have is a lack of vocabulary and spelling abilities. I think this is because of the lack of writing and reading experiences with the absence of technical tools. As technology advances, I find myself relying too much on tools like auto-correct and online dictionaries, therefore, one of my goals for 9th grade would be to practice more reading writing without the help of these tools. Hopefully, this will help with my vocabulary and spelling abilities. I think that I have many resources to help me achieve my goals. Some examples of this are my English teacher, the high school library, individual practices and etc. Overall, I think that my English would improve a lot as I continue learning in high school.
