Logo Design – Reflection

XiaoManChaTian (小满茶田) logo design:

DI1

Background information:

XiaoManChaTian is a new, innovative cherry-themed fruit tea brand located in multiple areas of China. The XiaoManChaTian brand is known to be the pioneer of cherry-themed drinks in China. They serve a variety of drinks in combination with their signature, fresh cherries. The brand mainly produces its refreshing fruit tea at public locations such as around malls, office buildings, and busy streets.

Intended audiences/consumers:

The intended audiences of XiaoManChaTian would mainly consist of younger consumers. XiaoManChaTian’s flavourful, sweet, cherry-themed drinks appeal better to younger consumers because not only do the products taste great, it is also sold at an affordable price. This allows younger consumers to enjoy the refreshing drinks produced by the brand.

Design Need:

Since the targeted audiences of XiaoManChaTian mainly consist of younger consumers, the logo would need to appeal to the younger groups of people. The design of the logo would also have to communicate freshness. Because this brand produces cherry-themed drinks, it would be crucial to express the freshness of the cherries in the logo.

Brainstorming:

DP2

After brainstorming the possible ideas for the logo, I choose three of the best ideas to expand upon with vector graphics. The three designs I choose were the drink sketches (Number 2 on thumbnail sketches), cherry movement sketches (Number 4 on thumbnail sketches), and cherries with handle(Number 15 on thumbnail sketches).

I choose these three design ideas because I believe that they best satisfy the design criteria for the brand. Specifically, I think that these three sketches best represent and communicate the ideas of freshness, modernness, and simplicity.

After selecting the top three designs I have, I began to further develop each logo on Affinity. While developing the logos, I created different variations for each idea. For example, I designed the logo ideas on both black and white backgrounds, used different placement of type, and different sizing.

CI2:

I believe that my technical skills have improved greatly throughout this unit. At the start of the unit, I relayed heavily on the support of Procreate. However, because Mr.Griffin encouraged everyone to create logo designs on vector graphics, my ability to create graphics on affinity improved significantly. Some examples of technical skills I learned throughout the unit are alignment, curved text, opacity, stroke width and etc.

Before (Panda Books):

After:

At the start of the unit, my designs were much like freehand drawings, however, with the applications of multiple technical concepts, I was able to improve my designs. Ultimately producing a professional, well-developed logo.

Cl1&RS2

With drafts of multiple designs completed, I gathered feedback from my partner, Alex.

After Alex observed all the different designs, he gave me helpful feedback and comments that would help me improve my designs. Firstly, Alex told me that he really enjoyed the choice of the font. This is because the font seems very natural mainly because it incorporated the geometric shape of a circle. This also connects to the design of the cherry as both incorporate the usage of curves and circles. After Alex saw the design, he thought that curves have a strong connection to freshness and nature, so, therefore, this font could also help communicate that.

Alex also appreciated the“tea buds” handle design from the logo, it shows the contrast between the bolder and more significant font of “小满茶田”. This means that the “小满茶田” (which is the name of the brand)  font would demand more attention than the less important “tea buds” font. This would guild the viewers to view the main words of the logo before the smaller and less significant details. Ultimately helping with communication.

My pattern, Alex also gave me feedback on things that I can improve. An example of this would be the path of the cherry on the other logo. The path of the cherry on that logo doesn’t seem very natural as it does not follow the path of gravity. Improving the trajectory of the cherry would make the logo seem more natural in general, communicating that your logo is connected to nature and freshness.

Before:

The last piece of feedback I received from Alex was on the shape of the cherries. The cherry from your logo seems very round. A cherry usually doesn’t have a perfectly round shape. By making it slightly oval would help communicate that your cherries are from a very natural source. Once again, improving the communication of freshness.

Refinement:

After reviewing the design criteria of “what makes a good design”, I noticed that there are many ways that I can further improve my design.

Firstly, I think that something I did well on would be design criteria 1, “The logo is the face”. This states that the logo’s job should be a representation of the brand, not an illustration of the product. For my design, I think that I incorporated the criteria successfully. At first, I experimented with an illustration of the actual product. But soon later, I refined the design into a more abstract and geometric symbol.

Before:

After:

Something that I can improve on would be making the logo function in black and white. My current logo is dependent on the red color of the cherries. However, after reviewing the design criteria, I realized the significance of designing the illustration in black and white.

Smell detector

This semester, In product design, we designed a handheld device to detect the sense of smell. My prototype contains a sensor, screen, buttons, and a handle. How it works is that when the device is activated with the controls, the sensor will detect the smell and the internal machinery will process the information. Finally, the data will be displayed on the screen either with an image or text. Overall, I think my device turned out the way I wanted it to.

Light-box

This semester, in product design, we designed a light-box and decorated it with places special to us. After a few classes, I decided to decorate my light-box with a scene from Niagara falls. I choose Niagara falls for my project because it is one of the best places I have ever been to.

My biggest obstacle was designing layers with illustrator, It was very difficult and I always needed help from others. In the beginning, I didn’t know how to make shapes and change sizes. Because of this, I took forever to design my layers. However, I eventually learned how to use illustrator and successfully laser printed the layers.

Something I learned during this project was using illustrator. After class after class of struggling with illustrator, I finally learned how to use it in the end.  I learned many things like making shapes, rounding corners, deleting and adding parts (etc).

Something I would change is painting my layers, I felt like the color of my layers weren’t very accurate, I should have spent more time discovering the correct colors before I painted. If I could redo my painting, I definitely would.

Overall, I think my light-box was a success because I recreated the scene pretty accurately and I am proud of it. In conclusion, I think I did a good job overall but there is still room for improvement.

Fish Cheeks Found Poem

Found Poem:

Poem explanation:

This poem was created with the word in the short story, “Fish Cheeks”. The main conflict in this story is Character to Self because the narrator wants to be more American and is embarrassed by her culture. After her family invited her crush over for a Chinese tradition Christmas dinner, she felt miserable and doesn’t like the way her family members act toward her American crush. Which is why I added verbs like “reach” “dip” and “lick” in the poem. But after many years, she understands her mother’s word; “your only shame is to have shame” which is also included in the poem. Overall the poem identifies the conflict and leaves the conclusion and theme a mystery.

Reflection on Driving Question

As Project Collision shifted due to the Covid-19 virus from a collaborative school project to an individual home project. Some big challenges that I faced were lack of communication and materials. At first, I was very stressed and didn’t know what to do when facing these problems, but eventually, everything works out fine and I was able to get back to work as normal. To overcome these challenges, I connected with other students by creating a WeChat group where we can help each other when needed. And for materials, I found some substitutes at home to replicated my original plans. Before this project, I used to think that testing wasn’t that important, and I should just design and create with my original plans. But now I think testing is a crucial part of making something because it allows you to improve more and more throughout each design. For example, when we just started brainstorming ideas for the parachute, I thought that the 48cm (diameter) parachute was the best and I should defiantly use it for the final design. But after some testing, I found out that the 48cm (diameter) parachute was too small and couldn’t provide enough drag for the package, so I used the 58cm (diameter) parachute instead.   Looking back on project collision, I learned that using data to support my decisions was very important. Mainly because it allowed me to make the most accurate and the best decision that is proven by facts. One area where data supported my thinking was when I decided to use the 58cm (diameter) parachute for my final design. I choose the 58cm (diameter) parachute because data shows that it provided more drag and made the package fall slower than all the other parachutes I made. Without data, I might have chosen the 48cm (diameter) which would have turned out a lot worse.

Ignite Week: Making bubble tea

After browsing the internet for half an hour,  I decided to make bubble tea for this project, it is easy, to make, not as time-consuming, and probably tasty as well. My goal is to make a bubble tea that both looks amazing, and tastes amazing.

My inspiration is this video from youtube:

In this video, it shows you how to make both the Perles and the milk tea, but I think making the milk tea is very easy and shouldn’t take long to make. So I will probably focus on the Perles for this project. After some research I did during the weekends, I think the best materials for milk tea is black tea and milk. So I think that will stay as constant throughout this project. However, I will be changing the procedures for making milk tea.

Information:

The best way to make the is to use flour, water, and brown sugar by the ratio of 3:2:1.

To make the Perles sweet and chewy, you need to drain it in cold water with around 20 grams of sugar in it.

Black tea best suits milk tea because it can give the drink a strong taste without having to brew it for a long time.

The longer you brew the tea, the more taste it gives.

Project collision part 4

Project collision part 4:

Currently, my team and I are trying to make the parachute prototypes, but due to the coronavirus outbreak, school got canceled, causing a lot of difficulties for us. Even though coronavirus is causing us trouble, we, Techincal, will still design and make a parachute that will allow our package to land softly and accurately, and my job is to design and make the best suitable size of the parachute to secure a slow, soft landing. Due to coronavirus, we now have limited materials and also need to create a different texting platform that we can access from home.

Testing procedures:

The image above shows our testing procedures from FA space, but currently, we cannot access that space, so we might have to collect data differently at home.

Data table:

Unlike the procedures, our data table will stay the same.

Prototype 1:

1x plastic parachute canopy

8x red strings

1x spill hole

1x green paper box

Due to a lack of resources, this design is different from our initial design. The box is in different sizes and is lighter than the original box, because of this, the parachute was also made to be smaller. For strings, the material and length of each string is different from the initial design, but the number of strings stays the same.

Project Collision Part one

Project Collision

Have you ever wondered why the package you order still hasn’t arrived? Or why you need to pay shipping and delivery fees? Well, it turns out that your package goes through a lot of processes before it can arrive at your front door, which not only takes a long time, but it also uses up a lot of resources, causing the shipping fee to cost a lot of money. But nowadays, company like zipline or flirty is trying to make this process easier, cheaper and faster with the help of drones, these company is planning to drop the package from the drone at around 8 to 10 meters above ground, and our goal of is to make sure the package delivered from the drone will land safely.

One way to make sure the package can land softly and accurately is to make a parachute, which is what my team and I are trying to design. My job is to find the best suitable size of the parachute to secure a slow, soft landing. And to achieve that goal, I need to decrease the speed of the fall. But to understand this, we first need to talk about how a parachute works. Parachutes can be commonly found in the sports of skydiving; when a person jumps out of a plane at a high altitude and starts falling at high speeds because of gravity. Then, the skydiver would open a parachute that would help the skydiver slow his or her way down and break the fall, allowing him or her to land softly and safely. But what is the parachute doing to stop slow the fall down? The parachute slows the fall by catching air and creating air resistance with its surface area to counteract gravity, this is also known as drag. This means that the larger the parachute, the greater the drag force (according to Scientific America).

But before we start designing our parachute, we tested our box without any design to collect data so we can compare it to our future design. That way, we can tell if the design is effective. These are some of the data we collected on the first drop:

Average speed 2.991725m/s

Slowest speed 0 m/s

Fastest speed 9.5702969m/s

Accuracy of landing 25cm off-target

Accuracy of its final destination 1m off-target

The side it landed on Topside

The side where that it ended up with Right side

With the data we collected, we can now see what we need to improve on. One of my most important goals is to decrees the speed of the fall to at least 2 m/s, or the impact will destroy the package.

Our goal is to protect our package from an 8-meter fall, and my key question is what the perfect size of the parachute is to decrees the package of the speed and reduce the impact before the package hits the ground. And my next step is to design and make the perfect sized parachute.
