Reading Reflection

Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. I would consider this as a very engaging book as it held my attention throughout the entire novel and I was very curious and tempted to know what happens next as the book progresses. Although the novel is fiction however, it closely relates to our real life as if bringing the audience into the situation. I have also noticed that many of the diction Paulsen has chosen relates to the theme and is fairly easy to understand. The story is also quite modern.

Formative reflection post

  • What did I do well in the formative Socratic seminar?
  • Overall, I was not satisfied with my performance in my formative socratic seminar, however I listened to others when speaking. and I think my voice was loud enough for others to understand when I spoke.
  • What do I still need to work on?
  • There are many aspects for me to further improve on, primarily on my participation as well as giving specific quotations from the book when asking/answering a question. Word choices are also equally as important.
  • What goals do I have for next time?
  • I will try and get involved in the conversation and increase the participation frequency.
  • What steps will I take to achieve these goals?
  • Prepare tons of notes before the socratic seminar, making good annotations while reading. Reread parts that I am uncertain of as well as writing my opinion.

Reading Reflection – To kill a mocking bird

I finished Harper Lee’s novel “To Kill a Mockingbird,” which concludes with Bob Ewell attacking Scout and Jem, which Boo Radley saves them from while killing Bob in the process. Scout walks Boo home while Atticus and Sheriff Heck Tate talk about how to deal with the matter. In terms of the ending’s context and meaning, I believe it has a deeper meaning than merely being a dialogue between two men talking about two separate subjects as described in the novel. After finishing this work, I was left with the impression that the overarching notion was difficult to grasp. Readers will be confused by Lee’s usage of old English phrases such as “Nome, yessum, and moseyin,” as well as his frequent use of slang and racist terms.

Reading Reflection #1 (To kill a mocking bird by Harper Lee)

To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, is about a black man named Tom Robinson who is convicted of raping a white woman, and he is sentenced to death because the narrative takes place in 1960, when there was a lot of bigotry. However, the local lawyer, Atticus, was a white man with a different perspective than the rest. He assisted Tom in demonstrating that he was not involved in any of the actions and was thus not guilty. However, after being sentenced to prison, Tom Robinson did not value this opportunity. He tried to flee but was shot and killed. Throughout the narrative, the issue of racial injustice is frequently referenced figuratively. For the rest of the stories, I made a few assumptions; for example, Atticus might have a different perspective on black people or local jails because they didn’t give Tom Robinson a chance of surviving; according to the narrative, they shot him many times.

Comparison between Black Death and Sars 2003

Yersin bacillus which is a bacterium that

usually lives inside the stomach of fleas.

Fleas live on rodents especially black

rats where it becomes infected over time,

this then leads to the outbreak of the

black death. as mentioned in the sources,

the plague itself kills 50% of patients,

however, it can also spread in other ways such as through a respiratory system

increasing death rate, the plague was originated in central Asia during the 1200s

Origin

Symptoms

The symptoms of black death began with headaches and later on, followed up with fever. Lumps also knew as buboes would start growing on the neck, underarm, groin and thighs of the victim, the size of the buboes which often became as large as an egg were hard and turned black over time.

Impact On Human

The black death caused a huge impact on humans back then, for example, trading was down for some time due to the plague which brings down the economy as well, meaning more and more people would have to suffer, many labourers died devastating many families for their income. The feudal system was also affected.

Impact On Human

SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) also known as coronavirus is a virus discovered in 2003, the virus was assumed to be transmitted by animals like bats that spread to other animals especially civet cats however it was uncertain. The first victim was found in Guangdong in 2002.

Symptoms of SARS include fever, malaise, myalgia, headache, diarrhea, and shivering (rigors). Most Severe Victims such as elders would experience Dry Coughs, shortness of breath, and diarrhea in the first or second week of illness.

The 2003 coronavirus didn’t quite create a huge impact on human except for killing the population however, it was researched that some victims might encounter sequela (A condition resulting from a disease) after curing.

How It Spread

The black death was started in central Asia during the 1200s, it lasted from 1345-1350 and was spread by infected rodents and flea bites later expanding between people through the respiratory system or physical contacts.

How It Spread

The epidemic of SARS has affected 26 countries with more than 8000 cases, the spreading of the virus is primarily between people through close contacts as well as a respiratory system such as coughing, the spreading itself often appears to occur in the second week of illness

Different Views Held By People

During the medieval time, some people thought it was a punishment from God as they didn’t really know the biology of the disease while others thought it was from the “bad air” Which was also known as the Miasma theory.

In 2003, it was recorded that some people thought the virus was transmitted mainly from the Chinese while the others thought it was just an animal disease.

Humans have encountered and survived several deadly diseases or virus outbreaks that was spread worldwide in the past and present such as smallpox, Spanish flu, COVID-19, Measles, Black Death etc, however, in this infographic I will be mainly comparing two of the deadliest pandemics throughout history.

Pandemics In The Past And Present

In conclusion

Yet both the black death and sars have created tremendous negative impacts ou our society, however, it also helps to further develop and extend  our knowledge on future imminent disease outbreaks

Product design (reflection)

1. Skills that I’ve developed and gained during the making process was actually learning how to design and create unique inventions as well as taking my thinking skills and techniques to another level(if that made sense).
2. One piece of advice that I would give to a future student while making this type of project is never to be hesitant to seek and explore new ideas because I personally assume that is the only way for us to develop.
3. If I remade my whole invention, I would change all the designs and include more details, I would try other different things in order to make my invention more intricate, I could combine other mediums together as well while creating the design instead of only cardboard.
4. Overall I don’t think I’ve achieved much in this invention because I know that there could be substantially more improvements and advancements while designing, I also didn’t seek for new things this time, therefore, I don’t think my project is good enough, however, I would try my best to make a more satisfying invention.
