Client Name: ISB Fringe Festival
Background Information: This year will be ISB’s 2nd Fringe Festival. Last year was a big success, but the first iteration of the logo was slightly rushed and so it’s time for a proper effort.
Audience: ISB community – students, teachers, & families
Context: T-shirts, posters, web pages. Possibility of other contexts such as stickers, lanyards, etc
Key Words: creative, community, fun, music, school spirit

Developing My Strongest Ideas:
To decide on these top 3 ideas that I wanted to further develop. I went through all my idea sketches and thought about how my idea would best represent what the fringe festival is all about. I chose these three ideas as I thought the first one (left) represented the musical and creative aspects of the Fringe Festival. Whereas the second one (middle) represents more of a school spirit, and the last one (right) represents a little bit of both. Ultimately I decided on further developing the last one because of how it not only has an element of ISB in it, it also has the music notes which shows the music and creativity aspect of the Fringe Festival.
Peer Feedback:
Does it reflect & express one/some of the keywords from the design brief?
- i think it expresses creative really well because it uses the negative space while incorporating different elements you would see at the fringe festival
Does it adhere to the rules of effective logo design? (simplicity, geometry, scaleability, recognizability, etc)
- i think it is simple in a good way because it is easy and clear, which is also pretty geometric
- it also incorporates the isb booster club dragon which has previously been on various things so it is a pretty good option to use in the logo
Is it technically good (vectors, typography, alignment)?
- technically everything is clean and aligned very well, i think you can explore more options with the type/font as well though
How do your peers/teachers respond when they see the logo? What questions/suggestions do they have?
- i think you can also consider making the dragon coloured and change the text font, or you could explore other colour options with the music notes or something
Teacher Feedback:
Don’t really need the ISB inside the dragon because the dragon already symbolises ISB. You could also play with the text sizing and placement as well as changing the font so the text style fits the logo more.
In the picture above (2nd revision of logo), you can see that I have responded to my peer and teacher feedback by adding colour to the dragon and getting rid of the ISB on top of the dragons head because I already symbolised ISB with the booster club dragon. I also changed the font size and placement in the final two logos. I purposefully made the bass clef symbol in the black and white logo not filled in, because I thought that when it was filled in it looked a bit strange. Personally, I like the look of the Black and white version of the logo more because it shows that my logo can still be used in its most basic form (black and white) and it doesn’t require colour for people to understand the concept of the logo and recognise it. I have responded to some of the keywords in the design brief by making my design slightly flowy to represent the fun, creativity and community (togetherness) involved in the event. I also used the ISB mascot to represent the school spirit involved.
Self Feedback:
My design can be viewed in black and white while still making sense. It also uses negative space to create the effect that the dragon is spitting out the music notes and the words. My design could be simplified a bit more so that when it’s sized down it will still be recognisable.
Growth:
I think my creativity, design, and technical skills in affinity have grown from the beginning of the unit to now. At the beginning of this unit, we had to design a logo for the Panda Book Awards and I didn’t really know what I was doing so I just traced a picture of a panda and added a book and the name of the event we were designing the logo for. But as the unit progressed my creativity did as well. By the end of the unit, I was able to create a decent looking logo that has parts of everything the Fringe Festival is all about. At the beginning of the unit, I was still fairly new to Affinity so I didn’t really know how to use all of the tools and effects of the software. But by the end of the unit, I was pretty comfortable with using Affinity and knew about what almost all of the tools and effects could do to help make my design better.
Here is my Panda Book Awards logo from the beginning of the unit:
Mockup Practice:
Through my first mockup trial, I had the opportunity to see my logo in a context rather than just 2D the whole time. This was done with the earliest version of my logo, so it made me realise that my logo doesn’t really stand out when it is placed onto something. Therefore, I decided to fill in the dragon and make changes to the fringe festival as well because I thought that it didn’t really show what the fringe festival is about, performing arts and music.
Experimenting With Different Versions of My Logo:
With this idea, I experimented with 3 different colours (transparent, black, and white) to see if it would have made a difference to the logo’s effect and overall aesthicness.
With the blue and black, bottom right corner, version I realised that without the black stroke outlining the logo, the logo feels like it’s missing something. With the bottom right corner version of the logo, I also realised that without the black stroke outlining the logo, it looks incomplete and I don’t want that to show when I put my logos on different mockups. Therefore, I added the outline to all of the logos with the blue dragon.
With all of the transparent versions, I noticed that the dragon also looked like it was incomplete and felt very empty. Therefore I decided to fill it in with black.
With the top row of logos, I experimented with removing the words “Fringe Festival” to see if my logo was still mostly recognisable. But I felt like without the words, the logo seemed a bit off and unbalanced. So I decided to keep the words “Fringe Festival” in the logo.
I scaled down the big logos into smaller versions to see how they would look. I thought that they looked okay, but not as good as I hoped for. So I tried making a favicon of my logo (3rd row) and it turned out pretty well, so I think if my logo were to be used on a website for promotion, the favicon would be good.
Overall, I think that the black + white and the blue + black + white logos work best so they are my final 2 versions of the logo.

Reflection:
I am pretty happy with the final outcome of my logo because I achieved my original goal of creating a logo that fits into multiple aesthetics. I did this by choosing to keep one version of my logo in black and white because it is basic, and I think that way it can fit into different contexts. I used a lot of negative space around my logo to give it a more flowy and creative feeling. I thought I did well in creating a logo that represents the school spirit, fun, creativity, and music all represented somehow. If I could do this project again, I would make sure to save my work so I don’t lose it like I did with a lot of this. I would also take more time to thoroughly look through all of my rough sketch ideas. The last thing I would do is to spend more time making more variations of my logo. Overall, I think my logo is good because it is very simple and the text and symbols are very easy to read, and it is also easy to understand the different things my logo is representing.
Hi Emily, you have shown some really nice work in this project, particularly your rough sketches and use of feedback. What seems to be lacking is that you haven’t really shown a final logo – which design was your final choice, what refinements did you make, and how does it look in a presentation context? Please let me know if there is anything I can help with.
