The main character in Evan Hunter’s short story entitled “On the Sidewalk Bleeding ” initially believes that there will be someone to rescue him because he is loyal, but later understand maybe his special identity will cause him to die, and he want to be Andy, not the Royal. His changing understanding is revealed through the use of symbolism, comparison, and interactions with other characters.
- Symbolism: “He lay with his face pressed to the sidewalk, and he could see the splash of the neon far away at the other end of the alley, tinting the pavement red and green, slickly brilliant in the rain. “
- Comparison: ” ‘I love you, too, Freddie,’ the girl said, and Andy listened and thought: I love you, Laura, Laura. “
- Interactions with other characters: “I don’t know, I don’t know. I don’t want to get mixed up in this. He’s a Royal. We help him, and the Guardians be down on our necks. I don’t want to get mixed up in this, Angela.”
