The Sacrifice for America: From a Soldier’s Wife’s Perspective

Hermione is a continental army’s soldier’s wife. She has just moved to “America” with her husband hoping to start a life away from the control of the British government. As her husband becomes a soldier and stands for their beliefs, Hermione goes through a journey of supporting her husband and a 10 year process of fighting for America. She stands with her husband during the Boston Tea Party on December 16 1773, by his side in the Battle of Saratoga where he passed days before the victory, and praying for the best when news of the Treaty of Paris was signed on September 3rd, 1783.

The American Revolution was a very important revolution to the American and World History. It has impacted the government system and the Independence of America. It was also the cause of the French Revolution. After the revolution, there were more trade relationships, America began their own manufactures, women started taking a bigger role upon children’s education, and hundred thousands of slaves has deserted their masters. Not only this, but it began the British Commonwealth of Nations, and it’s a symbol of revolution and the end of oppression. Though, rich white men and merchants were still in great power of the economy and slavery still continued despite how some people revolted against the idea, and that sums up the American Revolution.

The American Revolution was made of a series of wars and conflicts between 1775 to 1783 through the 13 colonies that made of America in the time. These wars and conflicts were caused because the 13 colonies tried to disregard British’s rule at the time, and create the country they made up of. This Revolution was extremely important as it creates much of the United States of America today and it was the cause of the French Revolution.

Quiet Power – Taking a Look at the Secret Strengths of Introverted Kids

“Quiet Power” is a book write by Susan Cain with Gregory Mone and Erica Moroz that points out the bias between extroversion and introversion, and explains how introversion may be a strength. This book includes tens and hundreds of mini-stories of introverts and their successes in a case where in this bias world, only extroverts could do. One theme of this book was “Introverts could be great perhaps even better leaders than extroverts.” 

Two reasons you should read this book is:

  1. This book gives you great insight on an introvert’s life (for an extrovert) despite how the author explains that introverts and extroverts will never be able to understand each other.
  2. It really allows you to think and realize the bias between introverts and extroverts, and the discrimination between them, as it’s something supposedly nobody has talked about, but happens on a daily basis.

Something I learned from this unit, was that reading captions and titles, connecting my ideas with real life experiences and events, as well as rereading can deepen my understanding of the next. Reading captions and titles really helped me gain a basic understanding of what this section of text is going to be about. Connecting my ideas with real life experiences and events allowed me to see the situation the book was talking about from my daily life and relate to it personally, and have a better understanding because it’s something I either been through, done, or experienced. Rereading allowed me understand the text better as I might have missed out on key information the first time I have read the text.

The Aged Mother [Theme]

“With the crown of snow, there cometh wisdom!” The province, given orders to abandon those of old age, and put them to death, had a kindly farmer who saw the unselfish love his aged mother provided him, who couldn’t bear the thought to leave his mother. Not only did his mother assist him so he could have a safe trip back from the mountain of “abandoning of the aged”, she assisted the people of her province. As the truth of the wisdom given proved against the governor and allowed him to change his mind.

In the story The Aged Mother by Matsuo Basho, the author believes that in many occasions, the old is the one who fills us with wisdom, strength, and knowledge. Throughout the story, the author mentions multiple examples of the farmer’s mother guiding and assisting the farmer, as it not only benefited him, but all of Shining.

As for one, the farmer’s mother still guided her son, as he carried her up the mountain Obatsuyama to her death, as “… her loving heart grew anxious. Her son did not know the mountain’s many paths and his return might be one of danger… stretched forth her hand and snapping the twigs from brushes as they passed…” (Basho pg 4). “‘The mountain road is full of dangers. LOOK carefully and follow the path which holds the piles of twigs. They will guide you to the familiar path farther down’” (Basho pg 5) The aged mother of the farmer assisted him unselfishly despite the fact he was carrying her to her death. Her son, emotional from her actions, instantly regretted what he has done, and brought his mother back, where he hid her, scared the governor would take her.

Soon, the young citizens have come to trouble, as the governor unreasonably demanded a rope of ashes was to be presented to him. As, in paragraph 7, with great distress, the son whispers the news to his mother. “’I will think. I will think’ On the second day she told him what to do. ‘Make rope of twisted straw,’ she said. ‘Then stretch it upon a row of flat stones and burn it on a windless night.’ He called the people together and did as she said and when the blaze died down… lay a rope of ashes.” Not only showing care to her son now, the farmer’s aged mother assisted the people of her province when they have come to a time of trouble. “Distress” to the citizens, as they were unable to find a solution to the unreasonable demand.

The aged mother of the farmer presented her wisdom multiple times, she proved her worth as the governor was told the truth of where the wisdom of the young actually came from, the hidden elder. He meditated in silence before he came to conclusion, stating “‘Shining needs more than strength of youth’” (Basho pg 8) The governor has realized that the community needs more than the strength and wisdom of the youth. The author also chose to include the famous quote, “‘with the crown of snow, there cometh wisdom!’” (Basho pg 8). Meaning, a person gains wisdom as he or she ages. Choosing this quote, to teach readers that the aged may sometimes be stronger, more knowledgeable than the youth, as this is the saying the governor recalled when he realized the truth behind the wisdom, knowledge, and strength the youth showed.

The Aged Mother, the beautiful story teaching readers that sometimes, only the aged will have the solutions to our problems. Though sometimes only in these times, will their knowledge and strength show, and shine brighter in our eyes, allowing us to realize where a lot of our wisdom comes from.

“Thank You, M’am” – Langston Hughes

In Thank You, M’am by Langston Hughes, the story starts off where a boy named Roger attempted to steal a purse from Ms. Jones, but failed due to losing balance. Instead of bringing him to the police, Ms. Jones brought the boy home and taught him a lesson using kindness.

In this short story, Hughes has described an internal conflict, of wether or not Roger should run away. Multiple times in the short story, Roger has questioned himself on which choices he should make. For example, in paragraph 23, Ms Jones tells Roger to clean himself up and says “Then, Roger, you go to that sink and wash your face,” and in paragraph 24, “Let the water run until it gets warm,” and  “Here’s a clean towel.” She uses her generosity to help Roger, and perhaps Roger is gaining more trust, as he is feeling more safe around her. Later, in paragraph 28, Ms Jones says “I believe you’re hungry”, to Roger, she could interpret that he did what he did possibly as one of the reasons on food, he needed money. The boy now possibly comfortable, tells Ms Jones he was to snatch her pocketbook because “I wanted a pair of blue suede shoes,” (Paragraph 29). As the story goes on, you can see from these examples that they are slowly trusting each-other more and more. As the story continues, in paragraph 32, the boy’s thoughts rushes through his mind, and he thinks “He could make a dash for it down the hall.” Hughes specifically uses ‘he could‘ because the author wants to point out how Roger chose to “care to sit on the far side of the room where he thought she could easily see him out of the corner of her eye”. The trust is gained in the story, and Roger no longer decides to run, as the woman’s generosity has brought him comfort.

I chose these parts to be included in the poem because these words point out where Ms Jones used her generosity to gain trust, and you can see how they were more comfortable with each-other with Roger’s actions. Some of which I included was “wanted blue suede shoes, the boy”, and “the boy sit where she could easily see him”. One of the main parts that gave it away, was when Hughes stated “he did not want to be mistrusted now”.

Trades and wars were abandoned. Laborers were diseased, which also caused landowners to be affected. Those landowners who lost laborers paid a higher price to get more people, this benefitted for surviving laborers. Many of the jewish were blamed and got killed or burned alive by angry mobs.

There were severe agriculture, facilities, and medical staff shortages. As well as weakened surveillance systems, and inadequate state funding. An estimate of $80 billion was lost, essentially due to medical expenses, travel services, and investment during SARS.

“Priests and friars went to see the rich in great multitudes and were paid such high prices that they all got rich.” One stated as an eyewitness to the black-death, as greediness spread through the medieval times.

Others said the 'discarding of the death' turned from "callous disregard to selfless devotion". As more people were caring about themselves and getting the work done, than family.




Due to untrustworthy official information, rumors were spread about SARS across social media, creating a social panic. One of the rumors led to buying a-lot of drugs which "cured" SARS according to social media. Soon, Banlangen (drug for "curing" SARS) was completely sold out in stores, even though it hasn't been proven affective.

Percy has ADHD, and right now, it can only be making his life harder. Though, Percy’s choices had greatly affected his attitude towards school, managing emotions and the positive relationships he has.

Percy’s choices can be improved if he learned a better way to control his emotions, rather than staying cool, as the school counselor had said in the book. Percy isn’t able to control his emotions well. Like on page 5, he said “’Will you shut up!?!?!?!’ It came out louder than I meant” Then on page 17, “I snapped”, later on Page 22, “’Thanks’ I blurted”. In the three times throughout the book which Percy had not controlled his emotions, he wasn’t thinking before he talked. According to the author of Self-Management / Managing Emotion, it says on paragraph 7 that “Emotional response is often quite straightforward, but very powerful: you want to cry, or run away, or shout.” If the counselors had done some activities with Percy when they notice he had started to let out emotions, they could perhaps do exercise, one of the first positive actions named that may help you manage emotions. Percy could get into a habit of managing his emotions this way better and no longer needs the counselor to tell him or remind him.

ADHD impacts Percy’s choices because he couldn’t target more than one or a few subject/s, mostly including the ones he doesn’t like. For example, Percy likes his teacher Mr. Brunner, one of the reason Percy likes Mr. Brunner is on page 2, Percy states “Let us play games in class.” In the article Neurodiversity: A Different View of ADHD, paragraph 18, it states, “People with ADHD also do their best in simulating environments. They like to be outdoors and move their bodies.” Playing games in class allows Percy to move his body during class time. This may be one of the main reasons he likes games in class. Later on, page 17, Percy states, “My grades slipped from Ds to Fs”. In the article, Paragraph 17, it states “They might be very focused when something interests them.” If the class is something Percy isn’t interested in, he won’t be focused on the subject, which probably results to bad grades.

Positive relationships can help Percy’s wellbeing and decisions. In the book, Percy first stated “Her name is Sally Jackson, and she’s the best person in the world.” [Page 29]. Then later, on page 33, he says “My mom is the nicest lady in the world. She would’ve been married to a millionaire, not to some jerk like Gabe.” In the two examples, Percy expresses his love and respect to his mom, showing a positive relationship. Like in the article Having Good Friends Can Improve our Well-Being, Especially During the Holidays, it says on Paragraph 2, that “Researchers have found that these personal connections may be more beneficial to one’s health and well-being.” Percy and Sally’s (Percy’s mom) relationship is very close, it could be very beneficial to letting Percy stay positive, happy, have comfort, and security. Like it states on paragraph 3, “Bonds can help reduce stress, increase happiness and bolster self-confidence.” This can help make Percy have a better time with ADHD.

Percy’s choices have affected his journey throughout school, relationships, and emotions. ADHD could make Percy’s life harder, but his positive choices and activities can also help shape the person he is.
