The Boxer rebellion: What happened after the Opium wars

The Boxers did not deserve a bad reputation because the Boxer rebellion was an effect of the Christian missionaries trying to convert the Chinese people unfortunate timing after the unequal treaties allowed foreign power onto Chinese territory. The foreigners that entered the country built the Beijing Legation Quarter. The foreign legations quarters were home to foreign diplomats, foreign Christian Missionaries, and Chinese people – many of which were converts. The Boxers, also known as The Righteous and Harmonious Fists, were within the Shandong province. The Shandong province at the time was known to be very dangerous; the province is filled with crime at the time. The Boxers themselves had a very patriotist view of themselves and their country.  After the opium wars, two wars having involved the imperial powers and china occurring in the 19th century mostly regarding Brittan’s smuggling of opium into China, China was forced into signing the unfair treaties, a series of treaties dealing with the aftermath of the opium wars that were unfavorable towards China. This war sparked anger towards the foreigners from the Chinese peasants and most of them felt as if they had to do something about it, especially the Shandong Boxers. The majority of the Boxers and people who were against the foreigners were illiterate and uneducated, unknowing of the politics that happened behind the doors of the government. All the Boxers had really seen were the foreign missionaries entering Shandong and trying to spread their beliefs onto the Chinese people. Around that time, there was a massive drought that hit Shandong. The Boxers had thought that the drought had come because their gods had been angered by some of the Chinese people being converted into Christian believers. This only fueled their patriotist desire to rid their country of foreigners. They didn’t deserve their bad reputation because they had no knowledge of the happenings of the government. The Boxers of Shandong didn’t enjoy the fact that their people were being converted into Christians by the foreign Christian missionaries which caused the Boxer rebellion.
