The context within photography can determine the ideas conveyed and the ‘art’ that the photographer wants to present. Referencing ‘Wrong’ by John Baldessari, it would seem like a terribly taken photo of a man and the scenery behind. Still, when told of the image’s title, it was evident that the artist himself knew of the ‘mistakes’ and therefore was criticizing the boundaries many have set onto art.

The rules within photography are guidelines that would help enhance the taken photos when used on any subject, and utilizing them can support the story within the image. Some of the rules which I keep in mind are the rule of thirds, to have a clear focal point, the rule of odds, and have a straight horizon line. When rules of deliberately broken, it should serve a purpose, which would be to present a concept or story.

Breaking the rules when unaware is possible, but to preserve a pleasing composition when unaware means following the rules, as the rules come from a tendency within humans and therefore is very hard to break the rules when unaware, with the exception of taking ‘bad’ photos. Referencing Baldessari’s picture named ‘Wrong’, it is an example of how context affects how the audience perceives the piece.
