Summary:

Pedro left Spain on a voyage with Christopher Columbus on a voyage to discover new places and find treasures such as gold and diamonds.  Christopher Columbus believed that the world was a sphere but others thought he was crazy and thought that the world is a flat surface and you could fall of the world and they wouldn’t see you again. Christopher Columbus went on a voyage and Pedro wrote a journal all about it, the Santa Maria, La Pinta and La Nina were all sailing together but then suddenly the rudder of La Pinta broke, Martin Alonso the captain of La Pinta fixed the rudder using a rope and continued the journey. They sailed on while Captain Columbus declared who ever first finds land will be rewarded 10,000 Maravedis! Pedro longed for the 10,000 Maravedis for his mother he hoped to buy her dresses and make her look beautiful… He hoped to spot land first. A sailor on La Pinta found land but Captain Columbus said that there was nothing at all and so everybody still had a chance to earn the 10,00 Maraveis! Everybody was complaining about why they hadn’t found land and some wanted to return to Spain. Christopher Columbus was helpless so he said “Give me one more day and if we still don’t find land then you can cut off my head”, the sailors all agreed, one more day.

The next morning Pedro saw Christopher Columbus talking to one of the king’s man, they found land! Right after that one of the sailors said land I found land everybody was overjoyed! The captain found the land himself and the 10,000 maravedis were his. On the land, they saw people with paint on their faces and some of them have gold rings in their noses, the sailors greedily told their captains about the gold they saw. Captain Columbus believed he was in India. The people thought they were angles they traded glass beads with spears made out of wood and shells and the people looked kind and so Christopher Columbus wanted to take 6 of the men to bring back to Spain. The natives no longer liked it as much, that night La Pinta disappeared.

 

They met another group of people and they were kind and whatever they look at, accessories or others the natives would just slip them of and give it to them, but they were all pointing at one direction, it seemed that it was somebody important coming! A young man came over and he was the chief… The Captain gave them some Castilian food they let them take their island. Everybody celebrated they drank wine and everybody was soon asleep. Ruiz the helmsman was drunk too, he was sleepy but he had to keep the boat steady, but Pedro wanted to help so he let him sleep and stated that he would kick him if anything goes wrong. Pedro was steering the boat when he heard a scraping sound, it was the coral they were doomed. The boat is sinking, Santa Maria was gone! everybody moved to La Nina and Christopher Columbus was crying. The chief told him instructions to find gold to comfort him. Captain Columbus had sudden interest and became happy again, he said it was a stroke of luck. La Pinta came back and they set they’re journey back to Spain but Captain Columbus was afraid that La Pinta would claim the rewards to themselves so he told Pedro to put his journal in a barrier and it contained his journal too, he wrapped it in cloth and set it in the ocean he hoped that one day the king would know what actually happened.

Character:

Pedro is a kind and selfless person he thinks for his mom not himself. He felt bad for the natives because Captain Columbus made them go on their boat. He wanted to buy his mother dresses so she would look beautiful.

Connections:

I think the connections between me and Pedro is that I feel bad for others when they aren’t treated fairly, I like to think for my family not just only myself and most of all I would miss home like he did if I set a voyage for almost a year, I wouldn’t be able to take it at all!
