choices – connect + respond / vision (set 1)

What will your message be?

I would like to convey the feeling of movement in my photography, so the audience/viewer will feel the chaoticness of movement in general.

How will you show this message with your photography?

By using long exposure, I will be able to capture a “shape” of movement, so the audience can see what movement will merge into when using this technique, experiencing the chaos.

These are two photos taken by Alexey Titarenko in a collection named “City of Shadows“. Through his photography, he wanted to express how the people have become bodyless, mindless shapes when moving. I would like to use the techniques he uses in his photography to capture chaos similar to his photos: Contrasting colors between movement and background, which attracts audiences attention to the focus (the movement shapes), and long exposure, which creates the shapes.

Develop and clearly state your vision.

I would like to use long exposure to portray my message for my project. By using this technique, I can artistically capture the chaos of a moment of movement, and create shapes regarding the theme. In some of my photos, I will have the shapes of movement, and the background will stay still to contrast the movement with stillness. In the others, I will move the camera, so the whole photo is shaky, conveying an even stronger message of movement and chaos.

I plan to use a slightly narrow depth of field for this project. I intend to set the focus of the camera on the subject, but the background shouldn’t be too blurry. This way, the audience’s focus will be on the subject, and the background is still partially in view. I will also be using a neutral aperture (around f/4), to achieve the same effect I want with the depth of field. To properly light my photo, I will be using a white balance that fits a 3200-4000k color temperature, because it will be shot outside at night. However, this might change depending on the lighting in the environment.
