Ref: The setting is in a fantasy land, from what I can tell. The protagonist is apparently very poor, and doesn’t have a very good relationship with his mother.

Salt by Mark Kurlansky

Salt
by Mark Kurlansky
Salt is an interesting book about the history about salt around the world. It explains in great detail about all the events in history about salt. With this it explains how salt can affect our world and something so overlooked has interesting and deep history behind it. If you are looking for a history book, you should definitely read this book. If you like facts about food, this book is also great because it contains a ton of recipes for food and sometimes the history behind them. Overall I think it is a great book.

Smell detection prototype

The machine I have designed is supposed to detect smells by sucking in some of the smell through a vent in the front. Then, the particles in the air are detected by the small detectors in the air vents. The information collected is then sent to your phone, where it is then sent to a server for processing. Once it is processed, it is sent back to your phone where you can see what smell it is. At the back of the machine, there is a clip for you clip it onto.  There are buttons on the sides to control the machine, and a charging port on the bottom. The top opens up, but the front isn’t supposed to open but theres no other way to show what’s inside the prototype.

My Lightbox

In this unit of product design, we made light boxes of our favorite places, or our most memorable places. For this unit, I made a light box of my most memorable place, Cypress mountain. I started this unit by picking out an image for my light box. Although other images stuck out to me, Cypress mountain stuck out to me the most because it was so close to my home, and we would go there every day in the winter to ski. Once I had picked out my image, I decided to go and pick out how much layers there should be and what layer is what. Once that is done, I moved onto making the design in Illustrator. It turns out, Illustrator is very hard to use. I couldn’t cut the box the way I wanted, and it was pretty hard for me to find the tools I wanted to find. Once, I had to take a screenshot, edit it in preview, and edit it back in! But in the end, I managed to pull through.

One regret I had while making this was being a bit behind on schedule, and because of that I wasn’t quick enough to grab myself some yellow lights. In the third picture of my lights, I feel like it would work even better with yellow ones.
Another regret is that I should have used blue lines to make an indent instead of black lines. Apparently, Black lines cut really really deep, and they don’t look very good on my light box too.
One final regret I have is painting the mountain black instead of dark brown. I also wish that my painting was a little better, as my shadows aren’t very good.

How Disease can Change the World

How Disease can Change the World

Once in a while there would be a widespread pandemic that kills lots and lots of people. These pandemics are very dangerous, and they occur every ~100 years or so. Today, I will be comparing the Black Death to the Spanish Flu, both very dangerous pandemics that has killed millions.

Black Death

Spanish Flu

It was believed that the plague first developed in Asia 2000 years ago. It was also believed that it was first spread by trade ships. Recent research has pointed out the possibility of the plague in Europe as far back as 3000 years ago.

1/3

OF PEOPLE

died from the black death in europe

Imagine if suddenly 1/3 of your family died overnight. How would you feel?

"During the beginning, there were swellings that grew as big as an apple. These were called Plague-boils. Later, Blood and Pus would leak out of those swellings. Following that, would be diarrhea, chills, vomiting, fever, and pains. The reason for this is because the bacteria attacked the lymph nodes, which causes these swellings. If left untreated, it could spread to lungs and blood."

Imagine if 1/3 of your family died overnight. How would you feel?

01

Yersinia Pestis

It first appeared in the United States, during the first world war. The exact location is Fort Riley, Kansas. One March, a soldier fell ill to the disease. Hours later, the disease would start spreading exponentially. The reason it was called the Spanish Flu was that During the first world war, the news was heavily censored in order to keep the people’s moral high. Due to this, the disease went unknown. It was only when the disease reached Spain, a neutral country, that news of the disease started popping up. Because of this, many people believed that the disease was from Spain.

H1N1 Virus ( Spanish Flu)

DID YOU KNOW?

the nursery rhyme 'Ring around the Rosy' was actually describing the symptoms of the Black Death.

03

The Flea, who spread the bacteria through bites

It first appeared in Asia, and spread to Europe by ships. The disease was found on fleas, and fleas were on rats. The rats travelled on ships to Europe, where it spread. The Plague could spread by air or by bits of an infected animal. During the middle ages, Rats were as common as a spider now, so you can imagine how fast the spread was.

When the plague struck, people believed in different things. For example, one perspective was the Flagellants. They believed that the plague was God’s punishment, so they would beat themselves three times a day with whips with sharp pieces of metal on them. Though it did provide some comfort for the bewildered people, it was soon disbanded by the Pope.

04

Flagellants

The impact on humans was bad, as you can imagine what you would feel like if 1/3 of you family died. But, there is one silver lining to the disease: quarantine. During the Plague, a city called Ragusa ordered sailors to stay on their boats for 30 days, which later was increased to 40 days – a quarant, which meant 40 in Venetian. Quarantine has saved us from the worst of the Covid-19 outbreak, so I believe Quarantine is very important.

A common human might think that the plague is no more, but the World Health Organization still says that there are 1000 – 3000 people dying of the plague every year.

During the first wave, the symptoms were not as bad. The common symptoms were similar to the flu, with fever, chills, and fatigue. The death toll of the first wave was not that high. During the second wave, the symptoms were much, much worse. Victims of the Flu fell ill and died hours or days after infection. Some symptoms include People’s lungs filling up with liquid and their skin turning blue.

H1N1

INFECTED MORE PEOPLE

than the two world wars combined * 5

05

Deaths of the Spanish Flu

Because no one knew about the disease and the news were censored from telling people about it, people died quickly. The total Death toll is disputed, around 20 million to 100 million people died. Soldiers travelling to Europe brought the Flu with them, and the overcrowded trenches only spread the disease further. It was during this time that the second wave started.

Because of the censored news, some people believed that the disease was only the flu and did not worry. This was the mind of Philadelphia at that time. The Director for Public Health and Safety said that it was only the common flu and told everyone to come outside. So, on September 28, people went outside to participate in the parade. Needless to say, it killed a lot of citizens.

06

The Grim Reaper was commonly associated with the Black Death

During the first world war, medicine in the United States was not that developed. The disease prompted the doctors to research more on medication for diseases.

During the Spanish Flu outbreak, the United States Started to research antibiotics, and became way better at producing medicine than before.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I think that both diseases have changed the world in some way or another. The black death has indirectly saved us from Covid-19, and the US became a medicine powerhouse, who later on would invent vaccines. Personally, I think that both diseases has killed lots of people, but created a better world after it.

my invention

On march 13th, I was tasked with an assignment that I think is rather fun. The task is this: your partner and you tell each other about your favorite foods, and tell each other about how it might be ruined. You then have to design a product that solves your partner’s problem. For me, here is my design process.

Design:

I first had to sketch out a design, and I came up with something like this:

I planned to make this out of cardboard some tape, and hot glue.

Production:

I first took out a cardboard box and cut it into many pieces. I then glued it together into a box without the front and top. I then attached a platform near then top, around 3 cm from the top of the box. Then, I built the tube for the water to come down. I had to put the reservoir on the top, and I then put on the roof of the box. I added the control panel last.

Complications:

I had a few complications during the production of my invention.

– The reservoir was going to be too small if I put it on the inside of the machine. So, I had to put it on the outside.

– the tubing would collapse without any support if the glue was not dry or had too much weight on it, I learned that the hard way.

– Some of the cardboard half a centimeter off, so I had to recut.

Feedback:

my partner posted this on my invention:

“Really creative making pipe thing inside the box.”

Mental Health and Technology

A) Describe how you feel and act when your mental health is thriving in the Green Zone. (Don’t just say ‘normal’ – what does that look like? What does it feel like?)

I can control myself to stop at any time, any I can communicate with others while using technology without any problems.

B) What are some tech habits and strategies that are keeping you thriving in the Green Zone? Describe them in detail. Also include people who help you with this. How else does using technology have a positive effect on your well-being?

If I was to ever wonder away from the green zone, I would force myself to stop, and sit in my room reading a book. Once I feel like that I am back in the green zone, I come out again. Usually no one helps me with this. Sometimes technology doesn’t throw me into a pothole, and instead has a positive effect on me. When I am not in the green zone for some other reason than technology, I sometimes look towards video games to bring me back into the green zone.

C) Think about your tech use and habits (social media and/or gaming and/or E-learning). What are the triggers/challenges that take you out of thriving in the Green Zone and into the unsettled/struggling feelings of the Yellow/Orange Zones? Use what you know about the brain, sleep and the effects of tech on mental health as you answer this question.

When nothing goes my way and someone is trying to talk to me. I had one of those moments yesterday when I tried a whole 2 hours trying to get a mod installed on Minecraft. All of it wasn’t working, and my brother came to me trying to tell me something. Luckily I controlled myself and told him to go away calmly. Constantly losing in gaming does not bother me, as I am very used to losing(I am not a very good gamer, even though I have played video games for more than 7 years now).

D) Describe how you feel and act when you are unsettled or struggling in the Yellow/Orange Zones.

when something just isn’t going your way, you feel like trying to punch a brick wall, because no matter how hard you try, you can’t break it.

E) What are some strategies that you have used to help you get back to the Green Zone? Describe a time when you have used it. Or, if you currently don’t have any strategies, think about the Mindfulness strategies from the previous post. Describe a time when you could have used one of those strategies or habits and how it would have made you feel. Also include people who could help you with this.

My strategy is to sit in my room and read a book. It takes my attention away from whatever is happening, and I get back to the green zone in no time.
