To kick off the logo design project I drew really simple design Ideas on a piece of paper!

After spending about 5 minutes painfully drawing I regrouped and decided to ask some people outside of school what they thought was the most reasonable design. Many chose the singular T shape that looked like a pickaxe  so I started expanding it on Affinity Design while keeping in mind of the criteria/keywords.

Ideation Matrix:

After using a notebook to come up with 2-3 versions of the original I started to design specifics. From the original T design it progressed cause of feedback and time to the final T that is slightly abstract towards a pickaxe.

Finishing  the design for the ‘T’ I started to play about with color a bit and started to attempt to expand and produce the entire name that fits the theme of the first letter but it was taking way too long and every letter looked like they came from a completely different font. Which is why feedback is a part of this project.

Feedback

Through out the design process I exchanged feedback between other people. Some of the most helpful tips are that to not worry about coloring the logo and stick with a clear/solid illustration that is in black and white. Also Mr. Griffin pointed out that it only needs to find a font that pairs and have similarly with the ‘T’ design instead of me trying to create a whole new font that cant be utilized.

Even though many said to stick to a black and white coloring, I still tried to integrate colour because it looked cool. This is one of many random things I have done during the designing process. This is a Colour gradient of the full texted logo!

Response to Design Brief because why not:
  • What creative decisions did you take and why?

I started this logo design assignment with my 20 rough ideas to give an boundary. Later I asked many people what there opinions are and which one they would prefer more which drew the boundary even smaller. This way I would have an exact idea of what I would design.

  • Which design elements and principles have you emphasized and how does this make your logo effective?

There wasn’t much elements or principles I used in this logo due to the lack of colour and shapes. I used shape for the starting letter of Terrakth which was basically 1 letter typography. After, I made up all the rest with a simple PT Serif font.

  • What did you do well in this project?

I think I did well in making the logo to be really flexible to use and extremely simple/memorable. Also creating tons of rough ideas/examples/inspirations.

  • What would you improve/do differently next time and why?

I would attempt to make a logo with art instead of making it all text. I think that would increase the audiences interest and make it more memorable. Furthermore, I would like to add more principles/elements like negative space too to simply make me look smarter at the same time having more utility.

Personally I prefer PT Serif Font the most because of the more sharp and classic look:

Simple Reflection:

After finishing the logo I realized it would be better if I did something that is more related to art, then typography. Doing a text logo have there pros and cons but generally I think small illustrations/logo would have more flexibility and would be more memorable then text. I think compared to the panda I did I succeeded in making a sort of affective logo considering we had only one class for the formative.

Mock up/Suitable Carriers

I downloaded many Mock ups to try to give some examples of the logo being used, some of them are:

  • Cups/bottles
  • Clothing
  • Bags
  • Pin

I tried to find mockups that are really reasonable/related to the logo itself:
