A Disguised Red Guard’s Journal

Yu Han, the main character in my journal, is a middle schooler who was sent to join the red guards by her parents. Under peer pressure and under the chaotic situation, she chooses to keep her own opinion deep down in her mind. She is a thoughtful teenager, she eager for fairness and freedom, but eventually made a choice that protected her whole family.

The cultural revolution was not worth it. The ins and outs caused thousands of innocent people to lose their lives and led the country into disorder for many years. The red guards who ended up being the “Trouble makers” were the ones who were once strongly supported by Mao. It also unmasked the darkness of human nature, revealed how state leaders tried to usurp the power by fair means or foul….. This revolution’s outcomes weren’t anything good, nowadays some Chinese still refuses to talk about this event, it is an all-time political sensitive topic.

The black and red history of our country

China, one of the biggest, most modern, most industrialized countries. Many historical revolutions happened in China, and one of the most influential revolutions is the Cultural revolution that happened between 1966 and 1976. In the ten years, the Chinese experienced both the brightest, most glorious period of their country. Also, the darkest, and the biggest famine of all time. During this period, people were killed, traditional culture faded away, as well architecture and items were destroyed.

What I have learned from this revolution unit is how power can make people thirsty, and with more than one person as the leader in one country or community can start a endless competetion. Until all the components die or “Disappear” from the party.  Eventually, the ones who actually suffers is the citizens. In this case it was the ones who worked all day long in order to help construct a industrialized country that Mao wanted. The ones who contributed their whole life in this revolution simply because what the propaganda imply ” All Chinese, All people should followe Chairman Mao’s ideas! A country with a fully communism society is an actuall paradise, and we should all go against the horrible, harmful capitalism which creates human-hell.”  In conclusion, this cultrual revolution is a complete failure, even though it did influence China’s monderization speed, but by looking at the revolution it’s self, it failed ( I think No body actually earned benefits from this revolution) how ever, it was truely worth it, as a Chinese, being able to have such a great opportunity to dig deeply into our country’s history was splendid!

Our video is inspired by common craft, the video is edited by Andy and daniel wrote the script, I personally worked on all the graphic/drawings. We collaborated well through out the two weeks.

Unpuzzle the Bloody Murder of the Bordens

“The Borden Murders” written by Sarah Miller,  a crime that happened in the Bordens house, 92 second street in Fall River, Massachusetts. Andrew Borden, the father of the family was killed, lying on the ground of the living room, as well as the stepmother, the second wife of the family, Abby Borden. This book focused on the relationship between the characters, mainly within the family.  The author used her descriptive words to lead readers through all of the bits and pieces of evidence, from the beginning of the family crime all the way to the end of this century case. The theme of this book is- Serious consequences might happen due to long-term dissatisfaction. Also, the book connects to many other ideas such as how kids have thoughts on their parents’ way of treating them and the difference between how their parents treat them and the others. For example, how Andrew Borden helped Abby’s family with any kind of issue, especially the amount of money he spent on helping Abby’s half blood sister to improve her living conditions. Where as the way he treats her daughters were not as “generous”, but he shows a wise and helpful being to outsiders. These details and ofcourse many other things lid on Lizzie’s dissatification towards her father and the woman who came after her mother, who didn’t play a good role in being a mother, who took away her fathers attention and love. Eventually, she took an axe, gave her mother forty wacks, then gave her father another forty…..

The top two reason to read this book:

1“ For those who are interested in journals, or documentary-like books that records a specific event, this book puts all of its focusing on this one specific crime. You get a chance to dig deep into a century crime which made certain influence to the society at that time and because how the author wrote the book it is absolutely worth it to read and have a full understanding of the case.

2“ This book kind of makes you a detective, while reading and trying to understand what happened, you are also guessing what will happen next since you follow the case from beginning to the end… Sometimes, in one piece of evidence, there may be many flips and turns. Just to let you know, Lizzie isn’t the only one who has suspect on murding the Borden parents! Isn’t it thrilling? To start from knowing nothing about who is who and what happened between them, to getting a hang of who dislike abby as a stepmother, then to switching your inspection between characters a few times!

One thing I learned from this unit:

I am really interested in nonfiction books since I like to read recordings of true events. The book reflected some problems that is very common to have between family members. Such as how a big percentage of kids or teenagers finds it hard to accept step parents due to many reasons! Likewise, these problems used to effect me, too! It is relatable! and in class, we discussed many society issues, and some social issues caused by some current events. I learned how to think about something, particularly a common problem that many people finds it hard to face, to solve or struggling about it, or getting effected by it, I learned how to see them as a part of our human life in the modern world. Not to make any choice or action before you get to know things very well. Just like how I changed my target so many times while reading the book because things flip and turn, without knowing something fully, it is not a wise choice to make a conclusion

Sound of the Thunder CER

CER Summative writing

Marrisa 8-4

Have you ever thought of how your actions can change the result of something? It might change history or even change the world. The theme of the story “The sound of thunder” is small actions can make a big difference in the result of anything. Even if you are just one human being out of the billions of people on this planet, still your decisions and actions matter.

This story was mainly about this time machine that can take people back to the early ages, and Eckels, a curious, passionate hunter decided to take a ride in the machine and kill the Tyrannosaurus Rex, also known as the “king”, one of the large theropods T-rex. When the main character Eckels paid the money and arrived at 60 million years ago when he and the Safari team landed on the ground, he was told to always keep his feet on the Path. Explained by the safari leader: “Its purpose is to keep you from touching this world of the past in any way.”  “Why?” asked Eckels. At this point Eckels and the other members in the hunter’s group were still confused, why is it so important to us to stay on the “Path”? (Bradbury 225). “We don’t want to change the future. We don’t belong here in the past.” Says Mr.Travis, who was clear about what to do and what not to do here, in this past world. Meanwhile, the hunters were warned with another strict rule: “And don’t shoot animal we don’t okay.” “Not knowing it, we might kill an important animal, a small bird, a roach, a flower even, thus destroying an important link in a growing species” claimed by Travis. As Eckel asked again, “That’s not clear”

“Alright, say we accidentally kill one mouse here. That means all the future families of this one particular mouse are destroyed, right?”  “Right.” Answered Eckels, still trying to get the importance of this strict rule, but was still unclear with the consequences. These quotes direct to the claim “ Small actions and make a big difference in the result of anything”. Referring to Travis’s words, the consequences after killing any object or subject in this past world can be big enough that it would influence the future. There are so many reasons and consequences related to the result of an animal or plant dying in that world, things such as food chain, environmental issues, ecosystem balance, and so on. After all these warnings and explanations, Eckels didn’t follow the instructions and stepped off the path. When his Safari leader- Mr. Travis and the assistant Lesperance gave out the warning for at least two times to the hunters, claiming that the one thing not to do in this safari is to step off the Path. The protagonist- Eckels wasn’t awarded of the serious words. After he stepped off the path and caused trouble, it was too late for him to realize how one of his small actions can cause the future to change and have a big difference.

“Don’t look at me,” cried Eckels. “I haven’t done anything.” (Ray Bradbury 234).  “It couldn’t change things. Killing one butterfly couldn’t be that important! Could it?” His face was cold. His mouth trembled. This quote described Eckels emotions after he killed a butterfly, it was too late for him to try to makeup, the butterfly has died in this past world. As it is told by Travis, each and every creature matters, and Eckels had broken the rules, the stiff penalty is coming. He tried to bring the conversation to another topic, such as who won the presidential election. After the side conversation ended, Eckels moaned. He dropped to his knees, He scrabbled at the golden butterfly with shaking fingers.  “There was a sound of thunder”.  The story ended with this sentence, there was no description of what happened next, but looking at Eckels’s words, it relates to the theme of this story that even small actions matter.

Percy Jackson Response-

From the book-Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief- Percy himself showed his weaknesses in managing emotions and how to deal with distractions during school. Evidence was shown in the book, and the articles that’s referring to Managing emotions/ADHD.

Managing Emotions/Self-Management//

Percy’s choices are often affected by his strong emotions and distractions from others. He can improve choices by working on managing his emotions in a better way.  Percy is often frustrated about upcoming things, for example, a quote from p.18: One evening before my final, I got so frustrated that I threw the Cambridge guide to Greek mythology across my dorm room.”. This quote showed Percy’s frustration caused him to throw books around his dorm room, so he had to use his own way to release his stress. The quote from the article about self-management/ emotion management:” Your emotional responses don’t necessarily have much to do with the current situation, or to reason, but you can overcome them with reason and being aware of your reactions. Saying that Percy’s reactions may not relate to what happened, it’s just because of his anger that’s growing “inside”.  Another example, during the field trip, Percy got very annoyed by Nancy BoBofit, he blurted out his frustrations right from his mouth. “Will you shut up?!?–It came out louder than I meant.”; right after his burst of words, Percy regretted right away. It’s because he failed again, on managing his emotions/feelings. Connected to a quote from the article: ”Stopping before you decide to give your self a chance to think..”. This quote relates to Percy’s action of blurting out words which he later regretted, giving yourself a chance to think about your next reaction is always a good choice when dealing with thoughts and feelings. Speaking about how Percy acts in school, he some times gets “annoyed” by his teacher; “Finally, when our English teacher Mr.Nicoll, asked me for the millionth time why I was too lazy to study for the spelling test, I snapped. I called him an old sot…”. Regarding this action, Percy again blurted out words he’d regret just then, this time they became random nick-names. One advice for him is he should have thought about how his words mean to others, when random words pop out of someone’s mouth, it’d be hard to understand what they actually mean. Again, considering about every possible action and result matters a lot. By managing his own emotions, more effectively, Percy will make better choices.

Attitude Towards School//

Percy’s choices sometimes gets distracted by his ADHD. Therefore, he’s always distracted by the surrounding, he couldn’t pay attention in class. He would have made some better choices if he understand his own situation. “You wouldn’t think he’d cool, but he told stories and jokes and let us play games in class, he was the only teacher whose class didn’t put me to sleep.”  Percy talked about his favorite teacher-Mr.Brunner. According to the article about ADHD, scientists stated: “It is not true that people with a diffused attentional style can never focus on one thing, either. They might be very focused when something interests them..”. The fact that Percy might have ADHD ( based on his behaviors), this quote is a great suggestion for his teachers; Mr. Brunner’s way of teaching interested him, Percy is willing to participate in the activities. Meanwhile, the article mentions  ADHD isn’t always a bad thing, the matter is how Percy and his teachers treat ADHD. By treating ADHD, a new learning environment could help Percy to concentrate better, might as well be affecting Percy’s attitude towards school. Percy’s choices would improve if more people understand ADHD, and how it would affect someone in a certain way such as their weakness in concentrating.

Overall, conflicts on focusing in class and self-management have been bothering Percy for a long time. Percy would improve his choices, if only he could stop before reacting, give himself a chance to think, and get a deeper understanding of his situation!

Who is Percy Jackson? What type of person is he in the first chapter?

In the first chapter, Percy Jackson was struggling to control his emotions, causing endless troubles, and always dealing with others. Nancy bobofit is annoying him on the bus. Many times, and still non-stopped. It seems like it’s very hard for him to calm down, his anger will only grow. Percy Jackson said: “I’m going to kill her” this shows that Percy Jackson is not really good at controlling his emotions. He used extreme words like -kill-. He is impatient. When Percy Jackson wants to fight back, Grover stopped him: “You’re already on Probation!”.  From Grover’s words, I can tell Percy Jackson might be a troubled-child. The principal is not satisfied with his behaviors, and Percy Jackson gets detentions from the school. Also showing he has been a troubled kid for a long time, because Grover said: “You know who’ll get blamed if anything happens.”. Grover is already used to staying with him. When Nancy bobofit snickered something about the naked guy on the museum stele, Percy Jackson turned around and said: “Will you shut up?”. This sentence showed Percy Jackson is straight-forward, he tell his thoughts aloud. Also, from the sentence: It came out louder than I meant to. I think he needs to be mindful of saying more respectful words. The principal often says to him: “Count to ten, get control of your temper.”. From his words and actions, it’s clear to see that he is someone who struggles a lot to control his inside, not just his feelings, also including his behaviors and actions. He is restless, causing trouble. Overall, he is not capable/able to keep and control his anger, that leads to all the trouble(the root/cause of the trouble).
