Argumentative Essay

Plastic has made many people’s lives easier, but it has also had a negative impact on our planet.Banning single use plastics is an effective way to save our oceans because it can decrease sea pollution, and reduce the amount of marine animals getting injured or harmed. Others may argue that single use plastics aren’t the biggest problem for marine life, but millions of marine creatures die because they mistake plastic bags for food. Therefore, banning single use plastics is an effective way to save our oceans.

Banning single use plastics is an effective way to help our oceans because it can reduce sea pollution. The oceans are polluted with plastic. According to the researchers at Algalita Marine Research Foundation, they “documented an increase in plastic debris in the Central Pacific Gyre Fire-Fold between 1997 and 2007, where baseline in 1997 showed plastic pieces outnumbered plankton on the ocean surface 6:1” This shows that plastic has been polluting our oceans for years. In addition, Emily Gosden, a writer for the Telegraph, says “plastic bags can take 1000 years to decompose,” this shows that every single piece of plastic created are still on this planet, and every single piece of plastic thrown into the ocean are still there. Banning single use plastics will control the amount of single use plastics being used. Less plastic bags will be used after a ban, which means less plastic will be going into the ocean. As a result, it will reduce sea pollution. Therefore, banning plastic bags is an effective way to save our oceans.

Banning single use plastics is an effective way to help our oceans because it will reduce the amount of marine animals being injured or even killed. Nick Mallows, the director of Oceans’s Conservancy’s Trash Free Seas told ABC News, “More than 800 species of marine animals are affected by plastics, and the entire ecosystem is now contaminated.” Moreover, “Fish in the North Pacific ingest 12,000 to 24,000 tons of plastic each year.” (Center for Biological Diversity). The plastic in the fish will travel up the food chain and eventually get to human seafood eaters. Banning single use plastics like plastic bags will reduce the amount of plastic going into the ocean, therefore less marine creatures will accidentally ingest the plastic. As a result, banning single use plastics is an effective wya to save our oceans because it will reduce the amount of sea animals getting harmed.

Some people may argue banning single use plastics is not an effective way to save our oceans because single use plastics are not the main problem for marine life. For instance, “Fish are mainly affected by microplastics because they bring it in with the water through their gills.” (Center for Biological Diversity) but there are many other animals that do get harmed or killed because of single use plastic bags. For example, “Joseph Curtin from New York Times states, “Millions of whales, birds, seals, and turtles die because they mistake plastic bags for food…” Therefore, banning single use plastics like plastic bags will help improve life for millions of marine animals.

In conclusion, banning single use plastics is an effective way to save our oceans because it can decrease the amount of sea pollution, and reduce the amount of marine animals getting harmed or killed by plastics. Even though opponents may argue that the biggest problem for marine life is not single use plastics, millions of marine animals still die because of single use plastic.
