My found poem is created with words from the short story “Fish Cheeks” by Amy Tan. The conflict I selected is the internal conflict that the protagonist faces about her cultural identity and wanting to be American. In the story, she is embarrassed about her Chinese traditions and tries to push them away. In my poem I included words and phrases that represent how she feels about her Chinese traditions like “strange” and “appalling”. I also tried to show how frustrated and embarrassed Amy was about her culture by using phrases like “I wanted to disappear.” from paragraph 5 of the story. At the end I included some parts of her mother’s words telling her that it is good to be different, and how she appreciates her mother’s efforts in the future. I pasted each word onto a photo and placed them in the phrases you would read them in. I selected a picture of lanterns as the background image to represent her Chinese culture, and being proud of who she is and where she is from.
