Critique of favorite red image:
- an explanation of how the images link to your inspirational images
My inspirational images all share the characteristics of an inorganic environment, a black and white contrast, a use of negative space, patterns and shapes, etc. My images adopted the use of the black and white contrast, and the use of shapes.
- What element(s) is emphasized?
The main elements emphasized in my photos are shapes and value/tone.
- Does the photograph “work”? Do the elements work together to clearly communicate a strong idea?
The photograph does work in a sense that it fits my message “to create a colorless masterpiece.” The whole point is to take photos with only a black and white contrast.
- Something that works well about the images is…
The light is pointing at only a chunk of the grass rather than the whole thing, hopefully giving the viewers the idea that the specific illuminated area is the main area of focus.
- What camera settings and photography techniques did you use?
In most photos, I put on a filter called Noir, which basically makes everything into different shades of gray. In the other photos I had it on portrait mode and a setting called Stage Light Mono.
- What qualities do the lines have: strong and bold; light and thin; curvy or straight; diagonal or circular?
The lines are all quite light and thin, because it’s grass after all.
- Are there any virtual or implied lines?
I’m not sure how to answer this question.
- What do you want/hope the photograph makes the viewer feel?
I hope that upon seeing this photograph, viewers would feel appreciative of this photo. It hurt my knees having to bend down for a long period of time.
- What do you want/hope the photograph makes the viewer think of?
I hope that upon seeing this photograph, viewers would understand that a masterpiece can be taken from the simplest thing such as a string of grass (or in this case, a few hundred strings of grass), and that it doesn’t require all seven formal elements.
- Something I need to develop further is…
I feel like my photography skills could definitely use a lot of work, so I plan to continue to practice taking photos during my spare time. And also my knees.
