Critique of favorite red image:

  • an explanation of how the images link to your inspirational images

My inspirational images all share the characteristics of an inorganic environment, a black and white contrast, a use of negative space, patterns and shapes, etc. My images adopted the use of the black and white contrast, and the use of shapes.

  • What element(s) is emphasized?

The main elements emphasized in my photos are shapes and value/tone.

  • Does the photograph “work”? Do the elements work together to clearly communicate a strong idea?

The photograph does work in a sense that it fits my message “to create a colorless masterpiece.” The whole point is to take photos with only a black and white contrast.

  • Something that works well about the images is…

The light is pointing at only a  chunk of the grass rather than the whole thing, hopefully giving the viewers the idea that the specific illuminated area is the main area of focus.

  • What camera settings and photography techniques did you use?

In most photos, I put on a filter called Noir, which basically makes everything into different shades of gray. In the other photos I had it on portrait mode and a setting called Stage Light Mono.

  • What qualities do the lines have: strong and bold; light and thin; curvy or straight; diagonal or circular?

The lines are all quite light and thin, because it’s grass after all.

  • Are there any virtual or implied lines?

I’m not sure how to answer this question.

  • What do you want/hope the photograph makes the viewer feel?

I hope that upon seeing this photograph, viewers would feel appreciative of this photo. It hurt my knees having to bend down for a long period of time.

  • What do you want/hope the photograph makes the viewer think of?

I hope that upon seeing this photograph, viewers would understand that a masterpiece can be taken from the simplest thing such as a string of grass (or in this case, a few hundred strings of grass), and that it doesn’t require all seven formal elements.

  • Something I need to develop further is…

I feel like my photography skills could definitely use a lot of work, so I plan to continue to practice taking photos during my spare time. And also my knees.

How context is important in photography

Context is important in photography because the viewers of the photo must know the object of the photo that they’re supposed to look at.

Paper Menagerie Thesis

In Ken Liu’s short story “The Paper Menagerie” Jack, the main character, understanding of his identity changes and developed through the author’s use of characterization, symbols and POV.

Sewable Electronics Project

My sewable electronic project was a light in the shape of a cluster of  stars, the CPX in the center acts as the main star with three modes: Idle, Red Giant and Blue Dwarf, the surrounding lights acted as background stars that could be activated by pressing the three conductive fabric tape. The original plan of for my electronics project was to use more LED lights and more variety around the CPX, for the sake of time, I decreased the amount of sewn LED lights to a total of seven lights, three red, two blue and two yellow.

There was a problem when stitching the conductive fabric tape onto the felt, it was that when I stitched through the felt, the tip of the needle gets a little sticky due to the tape side of the fabric, which made stitching around the fabric tape a lot harder. There were also other problems such as making sure the fabric tape didn’t cross each other. Due to the sake of time, I could only finish stitching the yellow LED lights onto the fabric.

If I could do this project again, I would make sure that the felt was much bigger so that I could fit all the conductive thread onto the fabric without anything crossing anything else. I would also use more LED lights of different colors and spread them out for more variety.

Ignite Week

For ignite week, I’m planning to write a story much like the sci-fi story but set in the future a farther than 2050, because the year I will set is going to be a long time from now, there’s going to be new inventions for sure and may different things may occur.

I found out that every paragraph in a story must be the same topic, such as if you are focusing on one particular character, it would be in one paragraph. Also, when writing a story, you should:

  • Show don’t tell
  • Create three dimensional characters
  • Point of view
  • Give character motivations
  • Write what you know

And so on.

Project Collision Driving Question

As Project Collision shifted due to the Covid-19 virus from a collaborative school project to an individual home project, a big challenge that I faced was having to do this project at home which caused many changes to our key constants. To overcome this challenge, I negotiated with my partners and decided to change those constants.

Before this project I used to think building a homemade parachute is crazy and it won’t work now I think it will work. An example of this is when we did the egg drop, I thought nothing can drop off the 2nd floor and not break an egg, and I was kind of right.

Looking back on Collision, I learned that the dimensions of the parachute, the length of string, the string material and the parachute materials all matter for the parachute to work. One area where data supported my thinking was when I did my first test of 85cm string, I dropped the box (Off 2m) and it splat onto the ground.

Magic the Gathering Enrichment Reflection

My challenger deck colors are red and blue, I’ve only won two rounds and lost all others. I learned that I usually don’t strategize and I act before I think, thus making me lose even though I have the advantage. My deck is somewhat “aggro” (Lot of creatures, spells and really cheap) and some flying, I try to bring flying cards to my advantage because some people don’t have cards with reach or even flying cards.

I focused on red and blue for my draft, I had some white, black, green and colorless as well, after a few turns of losing, I changed some cards I don’t really use on my deck and exchanged with my side board. In the drafts, I picked up a card called Infuriate, it gives me a +3/+2 on any creature I control until the end of my turn, I also picked up some Boreal Elementals which when I place, everything my opponent places costs two more mana, I have a card named Act of Treason, it allows me to take over a card that is not mine until the end of my turn.

I like magic because it is a good thinking game, you think about what kind of attack you want to pull off. The draft was really fun, what was pretty hard was deciding between three cards I really like. On my next draft I would like to think of how I want to play my cards.

Exit Ticket Reflections

I notice that most my exit tickets are either approaching, beginning or just not graded. This exit ticket proves that I have a hard time with negative

Looking forward to next week, I wonder what kind of questions will be on the exit tickets. From this information, I realize that the exit tickets are to make sure you know these questions and how to solve them

Reflection on Driving Question No. 2

When there is something fun to do or something to work on, I will complete the work first before I do something fun. For example, relax and listen to calming music, I should complete all my work first so if there is an error I can fix it.

Looking back on Project Self, I learned that I must trust my partner(s) in group projects so that I don’t tire and have to rely on my partner(s) in the final presentation. For example, I don’t trust or not confident with working with some people so when I’m partnered with, I usually put all the weight on my shoulders. Looking back on Project Self, I realize that I still don’t know a lot about myself but I am looking forward to finding out in future projects.

Self Management Learning Assets

Looking at my ratings I think an area of strength is my responsibility, I take full responsibility for all my actions, for example, in class, if I don’t turn in something on time, I take responsibility and I turn it in at some other time. I think I can work on using my time effectively, I can start improving by focusing on one thing and don’t stop until time is up or if I complete the task.
