C&I Blog Post 3 (Not completed)

One thing that posed as an issue while I was constructing this device was that both cogs weren’t fixed into the cardboard properly, so they’d occasionally move out of place and mess with the mechanism, despite the fact that the mechanism doesn’t actually work.

The initial plan was to pull the string which moves the cog and allowing energy to transfer to the light. Unfortunately it doesn’t actually work.

The types of energy conversion in this device is kinetic to light energy.

Product focus:

Energy capture & storage

Product ideas:

  • Phone case charger
  • Power bank
  • Dual charging cable

How this relates to energy transfer:

Because energy is transferred from one object to another through an external circuit.

Final product:

Dual charging cable

Define and Inquire Blog Post #1

1. What problems or needs can you identify that could be addressed with this kind of design?

Energy capture & storage

2. What examples of solutions to similar problems already exist that we can learn from?

  • A power bank on hand is an ideal backup to recharge or top off a device when you are far from a wall outlet.
  • While attached to a mobile device, a battery case functions like an external battery pack, providing additional power to the phone. Unlike the power banks, a battery case is attached onto the device without any external circuits.

3. Constraints

  • Limited time (2 weeks)
  • Limited resources
  • Limited knowledge
