Which ones worked and why? The tenth drawing was incredibly hard to find, in the end, I still wasn’t able to find anything for it.

Which ones didn’t work so well, and why? The eleventh drawing took quite a while to do, since I needed to find something that made the lines distinct to make the same effect as the drawing.

Paul Strand

  1. Copy the photograph into your portfolio
  2. List 3 things the photographer might have been interested in capturing in this picture? Lines, shapes, and patterns
  3. If you were the photographer, what title would you give it? Explain why. Shadow, because the whole photo is literally a shadow over an object.
  4. Name one thing you think is unusual about the photograph. The entire picture isn’t clear enough for me to identify the main object.
  5. Describe the use of line, shape, Pattern, texture, tone and focus. The lines and shapes distinguish the shadows from the object itself, the use of patterns is created by shadows, with the gaps in between the shadows casting light onto the picture repeatedly. The texture of the center object which I assume is a table is more smooth compared to the wall. This photo doesn’t display a wide range of tones, it’s only shadows over an object, making it appear darker than it actually is. There is no focus in the picture.
  6. What do you think is the best thing about this photograph? I like the distinct elements shown in this picture.

Product focus:

Energy capture & storage

Product ideas:

  • Phone case charger
  • Power bank
  • Dual charging cable

How this relates to energy transfer:

Because energy is transferred from one object to another through an external circuit.

Final product:

Dual charging cable

Formal Elements

1. Explain what the phrase Formal Elements means in photography.

Formal elements are visual features that when applied in composition have the potential to transform simple objects into extraordinary shots.

2. Describe each of the 6 elements discussed so far (line, shape, pattern, texture, tone, focus)

Lines – vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines

Shape – provides a clear distinction for us to recognize each object

Pattern – Similar objects lined up in a way that they repeat

Texture – The feel of the photos physically

Tone – Color mixture that is not a single color

Focus – A clear distinct object with a blurred background

3. Give an example that emphasizes each element

Line

Shape

Pattern

Texture

Tone

Focus

4. Can an image show just one element at a time? Justify your answer.

The picture can show as many elements as it possible can. For example, patterns consist of lines and shapes repeated across an image to make it a pattern.

1. What problems or needs can you identify that could be addressed with this kind of design?

Energy capture & storage

2. What examples of solutions to similar problems already exist that we can learn from?

  • A power bank on hand is an ideal backup to recharge or top off a device when you are far from a wall outlet.
  • While attached to a mobile device, a battery case functions like an external battery pack, providing additional power to the phone. Unlike the power banks, a battery case is attached onto the device without any external circuits.

3. Constraints

  • Limited time (2 weeks)
  • Limited resources
  • Limited knowledge

Abstract Photography

  1. Abstract photography can allow us to think more deeply about the things we see around us.
  2. Pictorialism is the idea that photography can be art.
  3. Abstract photography is a means of depicting a visual image that does not have any immediate association with any object of the real world.
  4. Pursued photography in 1925. Taught photography and became a freelance photographer.
  5. Industry, architecture, nature and common objects.
  6. Because he wants to show the world just how beautiful it actually is without any kind of techniques.
  7. Because he believes pictorialism has a heavily manipulative process.
  8. Pictoralist image Straight image
  9. Aaron Siskind took photos of ordinary objects without using any editing techniques
  10. Alfred Stieglitz, Ansel Adams, Paul Strand, Sadakichi Hartmann
  11. Uta Barth’s work is abstract because her work is ‘as much about vision and perception as it is about the failure to see’ which means she tries to get the viewers to think ‘be aware of their own looking,’ and her out-of-focus images. Andreas Gursky’s works are not abstract, because they are usually landscapes that are not out-of-focus, they are both not straight photographers because their photos don’t have much minor details,

Definition of Abstract Photography

Abstract photography is a means of depicting a visual image that has no immediate association with any real world object, created through the use of photographic equipment, processes and materials. Audiences need to look thoroughly to see what it is the author is attempting to express.

How context is important in photography

Context is important in photography because the viewers of the photo must know the object of the photo that they’re supposed to look at.

Paper Menagerie

In Ken Liu’s short story, “Paper Menagerie,” the main character, Jack,  is shown to have a hard time in school due to being half Chinese, this makes him want to live a normal ‘American’ life. When Jack grows older, he sees the errors in his ways and accepts who he is.

After Laohu broke Mark’s Obi-Wan toy and got into a fight with Jack, he got bullied at school for the two following weeks. Jack began to hate Chinese culture and demands his mom be a ‘normal’ white American mom. After that, Jack began shunning his mom whenever she spoke to him in Chinese, and soon, his mom stopped speaking entirely whenever Jack was around. Through this we can see that Jack wants to pursue a full American life and doesn’t want to be associated with any other culture.

Two years after Jack’s mother dies of cancer, Jack remembers the origami shark his mom folded for him. This memory brought Laohu back to life. Laohu unfolds himself to reveal a letter written by Jack’s mother for him, the letter talks about his mom’s life story. After this, Jack realizes that his childhood was nothing compared to his mother’s, and he realizes how petty he was acting by excluding his mother from his life. There is a sense that after reading the letter, Jack begins to accept that he is half Chinese and half American.

Paper Menagerie Thesis
