The main character in Evan Hunter’s short story entitled “On the sidewalk Bleeding” initially believes being a Royal can lead him to having a better life, to be upper class. But later understands that he is being stereotype, he was not him anymore he is known as a Royal. The main character had think that he had lost his true identity. His changing understanding is revealed through the use of third person point of view (thoughts), symbolism, and language usage.
Third person point of view (thoughts): ” He felt all at once as if he had never done anything, never seen anything, never been anywhere. There are so many things to do. He wondered why he’d never thought of them before, wondered why the rumbles and the jumps and the purple jackets had always seemed so important to him before.”
Symbolism: ” It seemed very important to him that he take off the purple jacket.”
Language usage: ” The garbage cans were stacked there, beating noisily in the rain. The old lady carried an umbrella with broken ribs, carried it like a queen. She stepped into the mouth of the alley, shopping bag over one arm. She lifted the lids of the garbage on the cans. ”
