Educational Poster on Design Principles: Scale & Proportions
Elements and principles are the keys to how we create graphic design. E/P is like the atom of our world, and it is the most basic and essential level to creating our illustration.
This design is all about informing people about the design elements and principles in a poster. An image is included that I designed to clearly represent the principle (scale) to make it easier for people to understand it.
Here are the illustrations from when I just started with this unit:
My image is designed this way to show the triangle slowly increase. First, I attempted more realistic ideas instead of them being geometric.
Later, I focused on the more communicative ideas that were much simpler since they only used shapes. These were slightly harder to design cause there were rarely any photos online to reference on.
Finally, I concluded on two ideas that my partner also thought clearly represented the principle of scale. The first one shows how the scale of the triangle gradually increases. The second shows a lot of different circles that get smaller (based on the solar system planet graph).
I also refined one of the ideas so that it could be more transparent and communicative.
I ensured that all triangles were increasing linearly in the final poster since my partner thought it looked strange for the last triangle to be so large. Also, he told me that the black and white colors are too simple and suggested using diverse colors. I also used the blur effect to have more of a slowly increasing and closing up feeling.
I decided to choose the triangular one because that one is generally more communicative and visually appealing to the audience. Also, it was easier for my partner to identify the principal when I showed him this photo.

Takumi’s Persona Poster
Design is the fundamental planning stage before constructing or creating an object, normally we can do it through drawing. I am very interested in the standard product design in Middle School as well as Cosplay Design. So this year, I want to experience graphic design and get better at it. I’ve also participated in art-related classes for over 8 years.
Here is my self-portrait poster:
PDF version:
The style of this poster is a combination of sketching and cartoon drawing. This reflects who I am because I love cartoons and sketching. I’ve originally thought about the use of a pure sketch, but since it doesn’t show and reflect everything about me, I decided not to do that. I also added some unique facial features that I have to make it look closer to my real self. The successes of this poster are that it looks pretty good and it shows who I am as a person. Next time, I would try my best to make sure it looks even closer to my real self, and maybe have a better, more detailed background.
The Paper Menagerie Analytical Writing
In Ken Liu’s short story “The Paper Menagerie”, Jack’s understanding of his identity changes and develops through the author’s use of Characterization, Symbolism, and POV.
Since the characterization through others’ comments implies how Jack looks different because of his Chinese ancestry, it is also the first thing people will notice about him. The characterizations that described him to have Chinese ancestry and how people did not like that. This made an effect on how he thought about his culture and ancestry. Specifically, how it was what caused him to be left out or looked down upon. Though Andy was partially Chinese and that wasn’t something bad, but his neighbor would say that he looks ugly and incomplete. As a young boy, he would be hurt through these kinds of comments. So, later on, he would hate when her mom talks about the Chinese culture or language.
Moreover, the text also used symbolism to show how he changed his identity. Laohu, the origami tiger, is something unusual and special, people might believe that it is a traditional toy in the Chinese culture, that is why Laohu represents the Chinese culture and Jack’s connections with it. When the Obi-wan Kenobi toy, a toy of the western culture, replaces Laohu, it means that Jack replaces his Chinese culture and embraces the American culture. However, when Laohu appears once more after many years and shows him the letter, it means that he embraces the Chinese culture once again.
Thirdly, the short story uses different points of view to show the different identity changes within him. When Jack was still just a boy, he had deep connections with the Chinese culture. However, as he grew into an adolescent he started to despise the culture. This is because as he grows up, he has been affected by racist thoughts. However, his mom thinks differently. She tried to encourage him to love Chinese culture. This didn’t work because he was too rebellious. But finally, when he was older, he read his mom’s letter, and with a different point of view, accepted it.
“On the Sidewalk Breathing”
In Evan Hunter’s short story entitled “On the Sidewalk Bleeding,” the main character initially believes he is a proud “royal” but later understands that his identity as a “royal” means nothing. His changing understanding is revealed through the use of symbolism, thoughts/point of view, and interactions with other characters.
Use of Symbolism: “He did not know why his voice had deserted him or why there was an open hole in his body from which his life ran readily, steadily, or why the rain had become so suddenly fierce.” (Paragraph 3)
Use of thoughts/point of view: “Had they stabbed him, Andy, or had they only stabbed the jacket and the title, and what good was the title if you were dying?” (Paragraph 79)
Use of interactions with other characters: “If we get a cop, the Guardians’ll find out who,” Freddie said. “I don’t know, Angela. I don’t know.”
English 9.8 Learner Portfolio and Goal-Setting
For my strength, I believe I have a good ability in analyzing and annotating text. A few weaknesses I have are, I am unable to write profound text or writing. I am also unable to form the best speech or to present in front of the class. Despite struggling to write, over the course of this year, I hope that I can create excellent writing. For resources, I just want the oppurtunity, for our class as a whole to visit the library more often.
Enzo’s Journal through the French Revolution
Enzo is a supporter of Maximilien Robespierre since the end of the National Assembly. As one of the loyal followers of Robespierre, he surrounds the leader as he progresses to the top of the government and the end of his reign (1793~1794).
Changes & Continuities
Changes
Was the revolution worth it?
The French revolution can be controversial when we ask if it was worth it. Personally, I would argue that the French revolution was not worth it. From the changes and continuity below, we can analyze the question.
Through the course of the revolution, many changes have happened to the French public and its government. Both positives and negatives. Especially during the time of Robespierre, there were a lot of changes for peasants and some laws on executing. This led to a bloody phase of the reign of terror. These laws included the reduction of taxes from peasants and increased rights of the third estate. Laws like Prairial 22nd were laws that made execution happen faster, eventually killing tens of thousands of human beings. The French government also changed during the revolution, with the Jacobins, National Assembly, and the directory.
One main continuity through the French revolution is the monarchy system. During the Ancien Regime, the king had absolute power over France. He could change any law, control any military force and government. This was one of the causes of the French revolution, to destroy absolute power and make everyone equal. Unfortunately, the revolution ended with an emperor, possibly even worth than the king, Napoleon Bonaparte. Though the French revolution wanted to demolish any unequal power, it ended with one.
In a sentence, the revolution was definitely not worth the while. Since it caused blood and death. Though peasant rights have been improved, the original goal of the revolution was not achieved. There had also been a monarch at the end of the revolution. So, the revolution was not worth it.
Revolutions: Are They Worth It? (French)
This video about the French revolution shows whether or not these kinds of changes were worth it or not. From concluding the major turning points in the timeline of the outbreak. We can determine the pros and cons of the revolution. After a brief talk, our team believes that the French revolution was not worth it for its loss. For example, the king lost his crown, the nobility lost their privileges, and the peasants lost so many lives but still lived in a monarchy system by the end of their rebellion.
From this unit, we can also assume that the revolution all have similar patterns after comparing the French and the Russian. First, they all started with a reign of an unfavored monarch. Then, they all have a social class system that divides the rich and the poor. Also, they all end terribly with another person as a monarch or emperor. In a word, when we end the reign of a dictator, a new force will come and take over their spot.
“Quiet Power”, the power of introverts [REVIEW]
“Quiet Power” by Susan Cain explains the concept of being an introvert or extrovert. In the book, multiple examples of young students or great people have been used to show the benefits and a few disadvantages of being Quiet. One of the themes of the book is that people need to make friends with all kinds of people, not just people that are like themselves.
1) The author’s husband, Ken, is an extrovert, while the author is an introvert. “My husband and I use a Mexican expression to describe this: “juntos somos más,” which means together we are better.”
2)Later in the book, an experiment done by a psychologist reconfirms that extroverts and introverts make better friendships. In the experiment, people are assigned to call someone through the telephone. When an extrovert calls another extrovert, the topic tends to be deep and serious. However, when an introvert calls another introvert, the conversation becomes too light. But when an extrovert talks with an introvert, the conversation becomes interesting. Also, people liked the extrovert-introvert talk better. This book is to show the positive sides of introverts and give them some tips. While this theme is useful in life, I would say making some friends that are similar to your interest is important too, because people might have a different opinion over things but a friend like yourself would understand your point. A part of the book shown that extroverts did not understand the concept of introverts, therefore forced the introvert to be just like themselves.
I would suggest this book to introverts and as well as extroverts. First, because everyone could understand introverts. Also, it would encourage introverts to do what they are good at.
Design A Smell Detector Prototype: The Maskmellator
My prototype is a mask with an attached smell detector, by pushing the main button, the machine will absorb the smell and analyze it. It will try and find a match on the data base and inform your phone, which is connected by Bluetooth or the USB port. By going on GPS databases, it can also identify where the origin is.
