Engineering Design Project – YoYo – Reflect and Share

Our final product ended up working very well however there were some challenges along the way. Starting with some confusion between my partner and I. There was a point towards the end where My partner and I would take turns on the lathe trying to get the wood pieces the same. I was trying to get them the same weight while my partner was getting them the same size. With 5 minutes left in class he came to show me the pieces and when we weighed it, one was 10 grams lighter than the other. Luckily, I had a study hall the next block and worked out with the FABLAB teachers a way to get the lighter one back to the same weight as the heavier one since I couldn’t afford to lose more wood off the edges. We ended up  hammering in some nails to the lighter side in order to give it some more weight. This also helped keep the Yo-Yo intact so it was a win-win. I am most proud of overcoming that issue since it seemed almost impossible to come back from after we had realised what happened. The Yo-Yo doesn’t necessarily meet our Success Criteria however it still ended up working so I view it as a success.
