Identity-artist research + statement of intent

The artist for my inspiration is Jonny Flynn. He works with spans print and digital design, content creation, videography, photography, and art direction. For this project, I will be focusing on his photography, as he has collaborated/worked with many sports brands. Flynn’s work is mostly very natural and plays with a bit of lighting, the photos are in focus which produces strong shadows and outlines of the subject. In almost all of the photos Flynn takes, there is eye contact between the person and the camera. When you look at all his portrait works the subject is looking at the camera. This would be something I would include in my work to make them look strong and powerful/in power. I think that Flynn’s work reflects the beauty of simplicity, which is what I would like my photos to portray as well. It gives a feeling of naturalness and the feeling of just wanting to look and observe the photos for longer.

Statement of intent:

The message I want to portray in my photographs for this project is that women in sports are powerful and strong in their own ways and the beauty of athletes in their natural state. So the mood I would like my photos to be in is natural and calm but also a sense of boldness to it, like a punch of power that shines through. To show the concept and bring out the social inequality that exists between males and females. The inspiration for this project is from Jonny Flynn, who works with sports companies in their photographs and advertisements. His work portrays a very natural and relaxed feeling, which is something I would like to capture as well. Some technique that I would like to try in this unit is shooting from a low angle, to have the subject seem more powerful as well as strong eye contact to bring out the confidence of each. Overall I want my photos to be natural and relaxed but still show the power and confidence of each person.
