Ten Days a Madwoman Notes

Ten Days a Madwoman is a literary non-fiction book by Deborah Noyes. The book is about the life of the female reporter Nellie Bly who risked herself spying in a madhouse. The central idea of this book is that that empathy is needed for everyone, even the insane. The main character in the story, Nellie, discovered how badly the patients were treated at the madhouse. The author of this book wanted us to know that respect should be equal for everyone, including the minority who may sometimes be treated with bias and discrimination.

  1. This page was mainly created when I started the book. In this page, I stated 4 possible themes for the book. This first one is about gender equality mentioned in the book, the second one is from the early stage of the book when Nellie was trying to enter the madhouse, Police force is needed. The third one is what Nellie had experience, she faced challenges and overcame those. The last one is, in my opinion, the main theme of the book. Most of the book has many evidences to support this theme, and further expanded it in the “Central Idea” page.
  2. This page is the lesson 6 page about the fourth theme. I rewrote the theme into what I though was more accurate, and connected quotes and plot together to form a mind map surrounding the central idea. At the bottom left corner, I wrote a simple explanation about the reason why this is a key idea throughout the entire book.
  3. This page is showed the connection between multiple sections of the book. There is always many similar topics such as gender equality and discrimination against the minority. Throughout the book, the “minority” had changed several times, but the author always suggested that empathy is needed for them, same as the page above.
  4. This is one of the last pages in my notebook. By this time, I had reread many sections of the book and came out with a flow chart of events and theme changes both physically and psychologically. Conflicts are also shown in the page. There is a conflict between Nellie’s situation, what she was assigned to do, and what her personal goal was. As usual, Nellie did not give up her dream and worked harder and harder on what she wanted to do, corresponding to the third theme in page 1.

In conclusion, I think this book is fantastic and had taught me a lot. I recommend this book to people who wanted to comprehend issues of the pass 100 years and more influential text. For people who want additional information, check the books below:

Book Talk – Ball Don’t Lie

This is a book talk about the book “Ball Don’t Lie” by Matt De La Peña. I read this book in Humanities G8 class, it is a good book and made me reflect after I read it. After reading this book, I thought about life much more deeper: do people have privileges? Is life really fair for everyone? I found the answer from this book. In the book, the author suggests that one’s initial status does not determine their potential. Overall, I recommend this book to people who want to learn more about the society.

Found Poem “Stay or Run” Conflict AndrewL

Explanation paragraph

This found poem is created from the story “Thank You, M’am” by Langston Hughes. In the story, Roger tried to steal Mrs. Jones’s bag, and got caught by Mrs. Jones. She dragged Roger to her house but left the door open. In paragraph 23, “Roger looked at the door — looked at the woman”. Roger could stay and get punished by Mrs. Jones, gaining her trust, or run away through the door and probably get taken to jail. The poem is created based on this internal conflict that Roger had between run and stay. The door and the jail symbolize the boy’s thought of running away, and the table represents staying with Mrs. Jones. The light bulb icon represents the the thoughts inside Rogers head, and the “struggle”, which was explained in the poem later. I used the word “I’m sorry” to bring out a sad mood and give a background of Roger doing something wrong (snatch Mrs. Jones’s pocketbook). I also described the Roger as a poor kid instead of a thief in my second sentence because he was lacking the positive influences around him. In the story, Mrs. Jones educated Roger for him to become a good person and “behave yourself”. In my poem, I specialized “doors open” because the story mentioned it many times. It is the icon of the internal conflict in Roger between keep being bad and purification. “And take me to jail” is one of the possible resolutions of the story, but in the story, Roger chose to stay.

Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief – How can Percy Have a better Attitude Toward Studying?

Introduction

Percy thinks he is a troubled kid. He couldn’t focus and he doesn’t believe in himself. His issues with concentration and self-confidence is critical, but if he tried to believe in himself; if he concentrated with certain strategies, he won’t be a troubled kid anymore.

Percy’s Problems

Percy lacks concentration. Percy’s problem with concentration is mostly effected by ADHD. In page 7, Percy said that he was given a same expectation although he had dyslexia and attention deficit disorder and isn’t able to get above C-. Another reason for concentration is fights with Nancy. “I got into more fights with Nancy Bobofit and her friends. I was sent out into the hallway almost every class.” Said Percy in page 17. This quote showed that Percy is badly effected by Nancy. Percy’s next major problem is have too less self-confidence. Percy hoped to not get in trouble, so he thinks that probably he will get in trouble. A confident person will say he won’t get in trouble, but Percy said hope, that means he is really unconfident about himself.

Solutions to Percy’s Problems

But how to solve these two problems? Percy can Improve himself by believing in himself. Whenever people lacks confidence, the best solutions is probably believing in themselves. Also, Percy can try to think of something good that he did, and it will make him happier, satisfied, and more confident. Percy can concentrate by trying to ignore Nancy. If there’re cures for ADHD, then great, Percy can use it. Also, he should try harder on studying, a better grade can boost everything.

Connections between Percy and I

I have a lot of similarities with Percy, but also a lot of differences. The biggest difference is the attitude toward school. I like school and rather stay after school, not going home. Percy is negative about school. He thinks that home is better than school. We still share similarities. We both think that friendship is more important than grades. Percy protected his best friend Grover everyday, keeping him away from bullies, but he himself got a bad grade.

If Percy believed in himself; if Percy tried harder; if Percy ignored Nancy, than he will start to be confident and concentrate on studying. If Percy focused; if Percy is confident, than school will be a better place for him and he won’t struggle with learning.
