Edited photographs:

For this collection, I got my inspiration from a photographer called Linda Wisdom. She likes to use natural beams to convey emotion and adopt dark and light colors to establish layers in her work and highlight the focus of the image. I intended to experiment with surrounding light; I didn’t make my image entirely black and white; instead, editing the color so that one prominent color glows brighter than the rest, which brings out the focus of the photograph.

Moreover, I wish to tell the story of “small” people in this big city—how every person in this society has a story of their own, no matter their significance, trying to accomplish a goal or just living a desired life. In these three photographs, I captured moments on Shine City’s street that entail this story. The characters included in this set are workers that we often pay little attention to in daily life. However, they are also a member of society and have their own story to tell. For instance, the first photograph’s main characters are the balloon seller and delivery man. They are all people who often get ignored during their daily lives. However, in this photo, I alter the color to bring emphasis to those characters (bright yellow, red, and blue contrasting with black and white), making them the protagonists.

Furthermore, I really like how I adapted the technique I learned from Linda Wisdom and incorporated it into my own work. I altered the filter of the images I took, coloring everything black and white instead of the main characters. This makes the photograph more visually appealing and gives a clear focus, drawing attention to the right place. Additionally, through the creation process of this photo set, I learned that a good photograph does not necessarily require a gorgeous subject. It can be simple and belittled and still hold significant meaning. Finally, in the next set, I wish to improve my photographs by photographing people of different ages (more people around 20-30) to better match my statement of intention. Also, for the next photo shoot, I will look for bright contrasting colors as they turn out well in this set of photographs.
