Introduction

In this blog, I want to introduce a book called “Google it” by Anna Crowley Redding, explaining the history of Google. This book is mainly about Larry Page and Sergey Brin, two students who invented Google, thinking big, taking chance, and changing the world into a better place. How they manage to make Google from homework to a company.

The user is always right

In Google It, the author has motion a variety of ideas/themes in the story throughout the story. First I want to talk about one of the central ideas, which is people need to stay true to their original goal. This idea has been shown in many places in the story. For instance, the first time when their goal and beliefs have shown up is at P13. “The user is always right.” this has been noted down in the picture below (top left corner). Moving on to page 78, this is when Google has become a real company. The phrase “the user is always right.” has been rephrased into their word, “don’t be evil” And that’s what Larry and Sergey do, they never event Google for money, they just want to make the world a better place. “Even though Google is growing bigger and bigger, “they never wanted to lose their scrappy, plucky, start-up culture” and that is what makes them special and successful. This culture continues when they are making money. They stay simple and beautiful. “the ad has nothing to do with the search. why will we show it? it is distracting.”

On this page below, look at the sentence that is labeled 4. Page 170, “For Larry, the user must be the number one priority.” Not only Larry, “Google the whole company was doing what it’d always done,” making the world a better place.

Help from others

Next, another central idea is the way to success will encounter problems, with others’ help people will be more successful. In this paragraph below, look at the right-hand side text. Look at the box, when Larry and Sergey first start their goal, to make the world a better place, they only want it to be a homework project. However, Google become more successful than they think. So they need to decide if they want to drop off school to run it, or stay in school and sell Google. This is their first problem, they solve it by getting advice from their adviser. But, no one wants to buy Google, because no one pays attention to searching projects. That means they drop out of school at the end. Later on in the story, Google needs start-up money. So, they went to Andy, Google’s for help. Eventually, Andy became Google’s first angel investor. Throughout the year, Google has developed into a bigger and bigger company. They are successful, but not without others’ help. For instance, under the box, I have written a list of names of those people who contribute to Google. However, this list wasn’t complete. Therefore, we can see that with others’ help people can be more succsful.
