Experimenting

Low angles + Motions

High angles

In school we experimented high angle which worked really well, increasing the photograph’s strain.

Low shutter speed + Motions

The low shutter speed did not work that well because the lower it gets, the exposure goes higher. So the blurred affect did not really come out because if you adjust the shutter speed too low, it will just be plain white.

Motions

These four photos shows strong motions.

Saul Leiter 2.0

The photographer I chose for this project is Saul Leiter again, but focusing more on the rainy theme instead of reflection on windows.

List of characteristics:

  • mainly focus on reflection, light, and color on glass (car windows, shop windows).
  • favor red as the main color. (red lights and umbrellas)
  • Raining or snowing day
  • object inside and outside of a display case
  • capturing light
  • The person is often not showing facial characteristics but rather showing the shape of lines in the body or a certain section of the body. (showing only leg and feet, face blurred with the water on glass, etc.)

Leiter’s photographic work often captured everyday scenes in New York City, focusing on ordinary objects and people in urban environments. He had a unique ability to find beauty in mundane moments, creating poetic and introspective images. Leiter’s photographs often feature reflections, shadows, and blurred elements, which add a dreamlike quality to his compositions.

Why did I choose him?

I’ve chosen this photographer because I think his work is epic and we have the same beauty standards. We all favor the vibe of a rainy day and reflection through glass, and his work has a huge visual impact.

A Quote from Saul Leiter

“Being ignored is a great privilege. That is how I think I learned to see what others do not see and to react to situations differently. I simply looked at the world, not really prepared for anything.”

I chose this quotation because it suited my vision. Sometimes watching people is just to frustrating, so we need to step out and look at the beauty of our world.

UNIT 02 WORKING THE SCENE – Mind Map

Set 2 #5 Red Photographs Evaluation

The midnight rain

In this piece, I express my excitement about my first red photo, indicating that it holds a special significance for me.  My inspiration for this photograph comes from the night scene work of photographer Liam Wong, particularly the themes of rain, umbrellas, and the unique lighting found in a cityscape.

I feel like one of the key element in the photo that was achieving a street photography aesthetic is the lighting in Shine City. To enhance the cyberpunk feel of the image, I utilized digital tools such as Procreate and Photoshop to adjust the HSL (Hue, Saturation, and Luminance) and intensify the color of the light.  Also, I lowered the iso of the camera to 600-800 to stop the exposure of the brand light. I was waiting for a person to walk in-front of my camera to make the photograph have a breath of life. Through these techniques, I successfully capture a vibrant and futuristic atmosphere in my photograph.

The photograph I’m evaluating exhibits a strong connection to both my set 2 photographer and my set 1 photographer. The nighttime scene, rain-induced reflections, and vibrant cyberpunk colors create a captivating atmosphere that resonates with the cyberpunk aesthetic. The interplay between the artificial lighting and the darkness of the night scene adds a touch of mystery and drama. The reflection of light through water adds depth and visual interest to the composition, while the intense and saturated cyberpunk colors evoke a futuristic and dystopian mood.

This connection allows for a deeper exploration of common themes and visual approaches, emphasizing the interplay of light, color, and urban environments. Overall, the photograph offers a visually engaging and thematically rich image that connects to both my set 2 and set 1 photographers.

The photograph evoke a range of emotions from the audience. It creates a sense of fascination through its captivating atmosphere, rain-induced reflections, and vibrant colors. The nighttime setting and interplay of artificial lighting and darkness add an element of mystery, inviting viewers to explore and interpret the hidden details. The presence of cyberpunk colors contributes to a futuristic vibe, generating a sense of anticipation and curiosity.

The overall moodiness created by the nighttime scene, rain, and reflections can evoke contemplation, melancholy, or a sense of tranquility. Additionally, the urban elements in the photograph may connect with viewers, evoking feelings of familiarity, nostalgia, or detachment from the urban environment. Ultimately, the emotional response to the photograph will vary among individuals based on their own experiences and interpretations.

Colourful Puddles : Digital Photography Review

These three photographs were taken in a film scenery in Beijing. After taking photographs of the modern city, I wanted to try something different with my photography, so I decided to combine Chinese architecture with a cyberpunk style because my vision was to connect the 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional space and I have a Chinese background.

The resulting series of photographs, predominantly adorned in vibrant shades of red, serves as a vivid testament to this daring experiment, with the buildings taking center stage against a backdrop of cool, ethereal blues.

The red color of the buildings symbolizes energy and is a contrast to the cool blue color. It’s like blending the old and the new together.

I used the red buildings as the main focus in the photos, making them the center of attention. This gives the pictures a sense of depth and makes you want to explore the details of the architecture.

The decision to capture the photographs in a film scenery in Beijing and blend Chinese architecture with a cyberpunk style showcases a unique fusion of influences. By combining elements of traditional Chinese aesthetics with the futuristic and technologically-driven cyberpunk style, the photographer has created a visually striking series that bridges the gap between the 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional space.

The predominant use of vibrant shades of red in the buildings adds a sense of energy and dynamism to the photographs. Red is a color rich in cultural symbolism in China, often associated with luck, prosperity, and celebration. In this context, it serves as a powerful contrast to the cool, ethereal blues that form the backdrop of the images. This juxtaposition of warm and cool tones heightens the visual impact and creates a harmonious yet attention-grabbing composition.

By placing the red buildings as the main focus in the photographs, the photographer draws attention to the architectural details and invites viewers to explore the intricacies of the structures. This deliberate choice creates a sense of depth and dimensionality within the images, encouraging the audience to immerse themselves in the fusion of traditional and futuristic elements.

The series as a whole reflects the photographer’s personal connection to their Chinese background, as well as their desire to push the boundaries of their photography by experimenting with different styles and themes. The resulting photographs capture a captivating blend of old and new, tradition and innovation, and showcase the photographer’s vision to create a unique visual narrative that resonates with viewers on both an artistic and cultural level.

The high saturation colour will catch the attention of the audience. The overall mood will make the audience feel a sence of wonder and excitement.

Set #2 My Vision

My vision is to bridge the gap between two-dimensional space and our three-dimensional world through photography, exploring the intersection of dimensions and perception.

I will take photos in the style of Liam Wong, drawing inspiration from his captivating works.

I am particularly inspired by Wong’s images “Minutes Before Midnight” and “Memories of Green.” In my own photography, I will strive to capture vibrant nighttime cityscapes with lively streets and a multitude of diverse light colors.

Through my photographs, I aim to evoke the energy, nostalgia, and unique atmosphere that Wong’s work encapsulates. I want to create visually striking images that transport viewers into a realm where dimensions converge, capturing the interplay between artificial light sources and urban architecture.

By embracing the beauty of different colors of light, I hope to accentuate the dynamic and captivating elements of the city at night. The goal is to evoke a sense of wonder and invite viewers to contemplate the possibilities that arise from the fusion of dimensions and the boundless realm of art and imagination.

The use of unusual colors in the photographs adds a really cool and unique touch. The lighting plays a big role in achieving this effect because it helps adjust the colors and sets the mood for the nighttime scenes. It also creates a strong contrast between the dark night and the vibrant colors, which makes the photos stand out even more.

I personally love how they combine cyberpunk elements with real-world buildings. It’s an interesting mix of the familiar and the futuristic. It’s like seeing traditional architecture alongside the high-tech and edgy style of cyberpunk. It creates a sense of curiosity and makes you wonder what it would be like if those two worlds collided.

I think I can apply this style to my own photography by experimenting with different lighting colors and adjusting the colors in my photos. The artistry behind these photos really inspires me, especially because I’m also into games, animation, and the two-dimensional world. It shows me that I can bring elements from those interests into my photography and create something unique and visually appealing.

A Quote from Liam Wong:

“My work wouldn’t be anywhere without the music that I listen to – it really helps me zone in on the mood of a piece when I shoot and edit.”
I chose this quote from Liam Wong because I never tried listening to music while taking photographs and I wanted to try this to set my moon and see if it will affect my work.

Set #1 analysis

This is one of my red photo

The choice of red color in the photo can be seen as a deliberate decision based on how it suited your vision. Color plays a significant role in conveying emotions and capturing attention, and red is often associated with intensity, passion, and power. By using red, you may have aimed to evoke a strong and striking visual impact, drawing viewers’ attention to the subject of the photo.

The reflection of the color strip in the photo representing the future of fashion can be interpreted in a couple of ways. Firstly, it could symbolize the evolving nature of fashion and its ability to adapt and change over time. Fashion is a dynamic industry that constantly pushes boundaries and embraces new trends, so the reflection may suggest that the future of fashion will continue to be vibrant and innovative.

This connects to my photographer because it has the similar element with one piece of his work:
