Capstone: A War in Ukraine Causes Food Shortage

“How to Solve Food Shortage”

by Chloe Kang

May, 2022

A prolonged war just seems to be a sign of our food becoming more expensive and that is absolutely true. However, it is not what it is about. What actually leads to people getting starved and protest starts from lack of food and an enormous growth in food prices. It is an emergency telling us to act. Since there aren’t any simple answers to solve, it has affected a bunch of people in the world.

THE IMPACT OF WAR

<Ukraine & Russia>

Ukraine and Russia are the major countries which export huge amount of the world’s key foods. “Nearly 30 percent of wheat, 17 percent of corn and 32 percent of barley, 75 percent of sunflower seed oil are crucial supplies are exported from Ukraine and Russia” (Aizenman). However, since Russia invaded Ukraine, a large section of the global world’s food especially wheat and crop have been stuck in those two countries which it is obvious in itself that it affects on world hunger. For example, “Armenia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan and Eritrea are the countries which have imported almost of their wheat/crop from Russia and Ukraine” (Vazquez and Fossum). Therefore they should find new sources from other countries, only to fail. Because wealthy countries that have enough food supplies have not provided funding food for them, because they also must keep their people healthy. To make matters worse, if quantity of crops decrease, prices of crop go rise. For example, if there is only bread left in a bakery, the value of the bread will be rose and the price of it will be raised as well. Therefore lack of food leads the price of food increases and makes people hungry.

 SOLUTIONS

<Donation, Individuals>

If those tons of crops do not get to market, a lot of people in the world especially in Africa are going to starve to death. However, since President Joe Biden knows that Ukrainian crops and Russian crops are not being exported, he is looking forward to “exporting the US food supply so as to help decrease the effect of the issue” (Vazquez and Fossum).  “Russia exports wheat the most, the United States export 13%, $7.29 billion dollars, Australia, Canada and Ukraine etc” (Workman).  Even though those two countries have stopped exporting wheat, the rest of the countries, including the U.S, Australia, Canada, can help them to ease this problem. Therefore they might export more crops in order to make up for the gap in a war in Ukraine. However, on the other perspective, this can be a chance for them to avail themselves of their crops to export because if the quality of crops is good, other countries such Afghanistan will import food from the countries even though a war ends which is beneficial for those countries.

World Food Program which helps reduce hunger all around the world can donate fund to those countries which need crops or provide crops’ seeds. However, if countries don’t have available weather to plant crops, other countries such as Canada or the U.S can export particular crops’ seeds to the countries.

As citizens of individual countries, people need to express their feelings to their office or staff by some activities in order to tell how serious this issue is affecting to people.  One of the activities people can do is ” writing letter campaigns” (Evers). If people express their feelings by writing letters or other ways such as emailing to governments, they might move into some actions to prevent the problem. People also can donate to global charity organizations that are designed to alleviate worldwide food shortages and hunger.  To overcome this situation,  there are lots of ways that people can do!

The way of solving rising food prices would depend on countries but “the most obvious action would be ending a war in Ukraine” (Evers). Since, there are no ways to solve it, so people would better write letters/email to offices or donate fund. Add more, if other countries such as the U.S, Canada export more crops, the price of food especially crop prices will be decreased.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, participating in campaign which writes letters/email to express people’s feeling to officers will be the activity that all individual citizens can do. They also can donate to global charity so as to alleviate the hunger, food shortage or world food program which can provide food to those countries need help, and if countries which are able to export crops, export more, countries which are to import crops will get benefit. Solving global food shortage and rising food prices don’t have simple solutions however someday this issue can be solved!

Mexican Revolution

We were making a historical journal!

Mexican Revolution

In this project, we were asked to collaborate with 3-4 people to create a video about the Mexican Revolution. This task was meant to learn more about the history of Mexico which was really fun.

TRAPPED!

Trapped by Marc Aronson is about how the world rescued thirty- three miners who were trapped 2000 feet below the surface. The book shows the perspective of miners who were set out to a desert, San Jose, and how they tolerated the time period.  The author includes physical and environmental factors and technologies which helped rescuing miners when they faced challenges. Along the way, we can learn about mining and what problem miners are suffered through the process.

I really enjoyed reading this book, and as you scroll the post, you would recognize plenty of central ideas and themes. ?

The first central idea that I came across in my notebook was: People in higher society should use their power in a responsible way.

See my ideas here:

As I read further,  I saw many examples that people above the surface tried to help miners who were trapped below the Chilean Desert and I realized that If you have patience and trust to somebody, can get what you want.  For central idea, enduring tiredness is close to the goal.

While I was reading chapter 11 (The Race Down), chapter 12 ( Phoenix Rising), I tried  hard to put themes together that I had been collected however the major two themes that I found were completely different, therefore I had difficulties through the process. However as I reread previous chapters, I soon realized that combination of two themes would be “You would never give up hope and lose patience even you feel powerless, uncontrolled”. Because I determined that the first theme I found was a part of the second theme. In addition, I assumed central idea as the way of rescuing and its backstory.

To sum all this process, I took note about cause & effect, it made me thinking more about the themes, central idea of the book, however I ended my note-taking right here because I was pretty satisfied with my works that I had been done.

Found Poem: The last kiss

THE LAST KISS- Ralph Fletcher

“My mother was the first woman I ever loved. A good night kiss from my mother meant a great big hug. I went to my father and he knew why I was there. I decided to try my father again. Maybe last night’s missed kiss was no more than a quirk. There were more several unfamiliar tries. I noticed that I was too old to be kissed by my father.” -A part of the last kiss-

I read the story, the last kiss which is about a child who wanted to be kissed by its parents every night. A good night kiss stood for a great hug to it. The main mentioned that it could go off to bed comfortably after kissing its parents. But one night it went to its father to be kissed by him and he surely knew why it was there but he turned away from it.

I believe that the main conflict is that its father ceased kissing it before every bedtime. The reason is that in fact, the word conflict is a struggle or a disagreement between characters. Add more, most events such as climax, falling action, feeling, behaviors are altered after the action of the conflict.

Therefore the relationship between it and its father had changed after the conflict, even though it tried lots of efforts to be kissed by its father, everything had become more awkward and awkward after stop kissing and they were estranged from each other. It was the first time that the main character felt something weird and later it knew that it was too old to be kissed by its father. This scene fits perfectly into the meaning of conflict. Therefore I strongly feel like the conflict of this story is that its father stopped kissing it.

I identify that conflict in the story is external. The reason is that one of the external conflicts is character versus character which means conflict happens people against people. And conflict happened between it and its father in the story. Therefore I consider it is an external conflict.

In my pound poem,  I mostly cared about the color because I thought it could demonstrate the concept of the story. For example, I used blue, brown, gray on the first page to share the story would be sad. Add more to that, I drew people who are hugging. The reason is that the main character mentioned that a good night meant a hug.

I used orange, brown, yellow on the second page because the main character realized that it was too old to be kissed by its parents, realized the truth. Therefore I wished it would fill with joy. I used yellowish colors and put a heart.

In both pages, I divided the background into variable shapes because I wanted to present the character’s feeling of sorrow, pain at its father by fragments of a mirror.

Review my argumentative essay.

I think i did well in looking into the informations that i had to find, ran through the details and wrote a short intro.  But I might improve where i found the informations from which articles. I marked myself in conclusion because it wasn’t clean.  Planning essay was quite hard to me because 1 year ago, i missed out planning and i directly wrote an essay.

CER

I think Percy is brave and has a courage, because in chapter 1 Percy helped his friend, Grover while he was in a danger and also when Percy was in a trouble, he didn’t feel so sad and tried to solve it. When Percy was trying to go Half-blood campus, a monster tried to kill Percy, his mom and Grover. But after his mum was died (actually she was gone) by the monster Percy killed the monster and helped Grover to escape from the monster. So that’s why I think Percy is brave and has a courage in his mind.

I also think Percy felt confuse because Percy’s mother kept secrets to Percy.  And in the chapter 5 after Percy got up, Percy told Grover about his dream, he drank a cup of juice ad then Grover asked him what taste like. Percy answered it tasted like his mum’s chocolate chips- home made, then Grover said that’s really good. So that’s why I think it’s pretty curious .
