The reason I am only 12/20 humanist is due to me disagreeing with some of the things that the renaissance humanists believed. First of all, I completely agree with the humanist belief that birth status doesn’t matter, while what you’ve done in life does. I also agree partially with the belief that humanists had about humanities. I don’t think humanities is the most important subject, nor do I think it is a representation of human culture. However, I do think it is one of the most important things to study. On the other hand, I disagree with the idea of looking to the past for answers. The times are constantly changing, every action, every ‘thesis’ has an ‘antithesis’, then these two opposites reach a ‘merging’, then this merging has an antithesis, and so on and so forth. With enough time, some things that we learn from the past will never actually be useful. Unusual for people of their era and location, they also believed that there should be a balance in your faith to the church and your life. Most people believed in the Catholic belief of “if you’re good in this life, you go to heaven!” Some people believing in this sacrificed a lot to go to heaven. However, the humanists believed that just because you could go to heaven, didn’t mean you could’t have a nice life. I agree that, if you are to be religious, you should balance that faith with real life. However, I don’t like religion at all. I believe it is a source of many problems that could have been avoided, especially with Christianity. The humanists were very faithful, unlike me, which is why I personally disagree with this belief.
