Engineering Blog Post Day 4

Image of the final product

How the device works

The product that my partner Angela and I made was a dream catcher that lights up. This device has multipurpose because it not only is used as a nice decoration you can put up in your room, but it also provides a nice subtle light that can be used when studying, trying to sleep, or just hanging out. The way that the light works on this device is through a small battery that is connected to the LED’s that we inserted. There is a small switch on the side, and as we have two you can change the strength/power of the light by wither turning both on, or only applying one based on how bright you want it to be. The energy transfer that this device uses is a transfer of chemical energy to electrical, this is found in the battery.

Successful areas

An area where we were particularly successful in was the overall making of the structure and base of the dream catcher. We were able to attach all of the pieces of string by tying them together with wax string and weaving it a metal coil. This made the body of the cream catcher a lot of aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

Unsuccessful areas

An area where our device could use some improvement is having the battery’s be fully covered. When we were planning and sketching our initial device out, we were thinking to cover the batteries with the feathers and strings that dangle down. However, when we got the batteries, they were not only slightly bigger that we had anticipated, but the feathers didn’t fully cover them up. If we had more time to edit and make changes to our device, this is definitely one criterion in which I would make those changes.

Environmental impacts

One thing that me and partner did that had an impact on the environment was we decided to repurpose materials and use strings or beads that had already been used before. Another thing that we did to impact the environment was chosen to use batteries instead of an electrical plug.

Potential client/consumer

The potential client/consumer would be any person who wanted to add some decoration to their room, and/or wanted to have a subtle light that they could use at nighttime. It isn’t something that is very eye-catching, however the minimal effect of the device allows a greater consumer and popularity that this product would have.

Engineering Blog Post 3

Pictures from day 1 of creating:

Reflection process:
The process right now is going very well, me and Angela are working our best to work as efficiently and effectively as possible. We have created the base of the dream catcher and have started to make the feather strings.

Pictures from day 2 of creating:

Reflection Process:

We accomplished a lot today by creating beaded string and feathered string for the overall aesthetic of the outside. We also tied and hot glued the strings onto the base of the dream catcher to make it look like it is dangling/falling from it. Lastly, we attached the fairy lights to the base by wrapping them around and then using a thin metal wire to secure it into place. The fairy lights look nice turned on because they reflect onto the feathers.

Video of our prototype being turned on:

Peer reviews we gathered on the 3rd day of creating:

https://isbdragons-my.sharepoint.com/personal/hana_parker_student_isb_bj_edu_cn/_layouts/15/stream.aspx?id=%2Fpersonal%2Fhana%5Fparker%5Fstudent%5Fisb%5Fbj%5Fedu%5Fcn%2FDocuments%2Fupdated%20peer%20review%2Emp4&referrer=OfficeHome&referrerScenario=EDGEWORTH

Reflection process:

We had pretty much finished our device on this lesson and the only thing we had to do left was attach a string to help hold the dream catcher up right. Since we did receive some feedback from peers and friends that were in the design studio, we will make the changes we feel are appropriate to our timing and our goal. One thing that was pretty challenging this day was that we had run out of our metal wiring that was holding the feather and strings together, so we had to spend a lot of time testing out other materials that would work well for this. We tried paper clips, thicker metal wiring, and some wax string. We decided to go with the wax string because it was the most beneficial to our time and was easiest for us to use. Although we did find a solution to our problem, this did delay some time that we could have used to add a holding string.

Engineering Project Blog Post Day 1

What is this engineering task?

This engineering task is about conceptualizing and engineering a device that demonstrates my understanding of what energy transfer is.

Plan for device

My partner Angela and I are planning on creating a device using light to show the transfer. We will do a dream capture with fairy lights hanging down from the top and the tight form we will use are fairy lights. Fairy lights have a battery pack attached to them so the battery will represent the chemical aspect of this device. (Chemical—>Electrical Transfer)

Target audience or consumer

The target audience of this dream catcher device can be many people. This device not only allows a soft light in your room at night, but it can also add a cute and minimal decoration to your room. Some ways that this dream catcher light could be used effectively is by hanging it over your bed to help read a book, hanging it next to your desk to help with late-night homework, and of course, it helps with a good sleep by catching all your nightmares.

Pros and cons

The pros to this dream catcher light are that it is a very good source of light if you are getting tired and you don’t want a harsh light in your room. It is also a very cute addition to your room décor with or without the light being turned on. Lastly, this dream catcher light is very convenient because the chemical transfer of energy is happening through a battery which means you can place this anywhere you want without having to worry about plugging your light in.

Some cons to this dream catcher light would be that since we are using batteries, you would have to continuously buy and change them out when the light begins to dim. Another con may be that not everyone finds this aesthetic or light fixture cute, and it may be more of an acquired taste.

Capstone: The Truth to Trafficking

The Truth to Trafficking

Background Information    Out of all the victims to human trafficking 71% of them are the female population. Poor young girls get kidnapped right off the street they live on to work a lifetime of labor. Global profits state 150 billion dollars a year go to traffickers, and 99 billion of that is from commercial sex exploitation. (Facts about Human Trafficking) These things have only become familiar to more people throughout the last five years, and people want to make a change. It all began with an organization funding for the children of Iraq to find peace, now all over the internet there are websites, fundraisers, and protests trying to raise money and awareness. But does this work, and why is it that girls get trafficked more than boys?
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals I have been working towards are number five, which is Gender Equality, and number three, which is Good Health. Gender Equality plays a very big part due to the amount of complication gender roles play in human trafficking. Good Health is also very important because due to the lack of health many people go through when they are being trafficked.
The fact that the female population gets trafficked far more than the male has become a huge problem globally; some of the causes of this are websites being on the internet with a primary goal of selling young girls, another is that girls are seen as a lot weaker and cannot seem to fend for themselves, lastly there are so many girls in the world that have yet to be educated about safety and such topics as this one.
What is human trafficking?
Human trafficking continues to reinforce male superiority in an already gender-biased society. Human trafficking is a large line of people partaking in a “business” that stretches all over the world. In this so-called business, people kidnap kids, teens, and even adults. While they have them, they consistently rape, beat, and labor them. There are millions of these websites all over the internet. They have tried to be shut down various times by the police but there are so many users and so many people managing the website, it’s merely impossible for police and detectives to get hold of it. Additionally, a lot of these apps and websites are used for just social media like Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook, so many have good meaning to them. (Human Trafficking and Social Media) trafficking the most.

Data Chart 1- Here is a map showing the places around the world suffering from trafficking the most

The charge for human trafficking is a demand for cheap labor, services, and commercial sex. These human traffickers employ force, fraud, and coercion in victimizing others in desire of a huge profit. The only goal people have from this is the money, many people will go to a high extent just for the profit. There have also been many occurrences where people form groups together, so they can sell girls to each other and labor them with a guaranteed penny in their pocket. (Human Trafficking and Money Laundering) It’s truly devastating how many young girls spend their whole life being victims of this business. Traffickers like to take their victims from places in poverty, due to the lack of security cameras and a very weak police force. Therefore, most girls who get taken in places surrounded by poverty are hard to find in such short times, this is what leads to a lifetime of labor. Police are usually on it for a few months, but the same cases keep occurring, so they end up giving up. This often leads to an endless cycle and lifestyle of suffering for many girls in our world. (Poverty’s Contribution to Trafficking)
This young girl finally feels free
Along with all this information about trafficking, there are also many true stories that brave young woman have decided to share. Brave young woman could be the new face of our future. Recently in many towns and local neighborhoods in the United States young girls have been a lot braver to share about their trafficking experiences. Many people feel that it is important to assure their children and their students of safety and knowledge that they can be open with others. It’s only been throughout the last few years that people have felt comfortable sharing about this due to the amount of sexism and gender inequality our world had faced in prior years. Girls and young woman have been coming together and forming protesting groups, some of the larger cooperation’s are Safe America, Love Justice International, and Raising Tactical Daughters. These mainly contain girls who are trafficking survivors, have a family or friend who is a survivor, or just a girl that wants to support for justice. On all these websites there are many young survivors here to tell their story. (Training and Educating).

Picture 1- This is a group of woman protesting for justice.

There was a girl named Shamere McKenzie, she had a student athlete scholarship at Saint John’s University in New York. She was out one night and met a man, she got lured in by his charm and slowly started trusting him more with her personal business including what troubles she was getting into financially. She had just recently gotten injured, so she needed a new way to pay off her tuition balance, because student loan and living in New York were not making it easier. This man offered her to live in his apartment, but she would have to work at a strip club. This being her only choice she agreed. All she needed was 3000 dollars and she would quit immediately after, and luckily within 2 weeks she had her profit and was ready to leave. Except as she was walking towards the door, she heard footsteps trailing behind her, he punched her in the face multiple times until she blacked out. The next morning, she woke up in the man’s apartment covered in urine. Every night she was hit, choked, and raped. He continuously threatened her saying he would kill her family if she spoke to anyone about the things he had done to her. This was the moment she knew she had been set up. As soon as she spoke out, he was locked in jail. Even though she still faces years and years of emotional trauma, as she said so herself, she finally feels free. (Shamere McKenzie)
The world’s contribution to end trafficking
Now because of these stories they have really influenced people to want to make a difference. Solutions that have been implemented like organizations and funding money do not help bring trafficking victim numbers down, however education has shown it might.

Graph 1- This is a chart showing the number of trafficking cases throughout the last 15 years

From 2014-2017 the number of victims to trafficking skyrocketed, therefore many people in local cities and states tried to make a difference. Ever since then there have been many organizations, protests, and websites where you can fund money and support to bring trafficking to a stop. However, this did not work the way people thought it would. Numbers have been pretty like what they were in 2017, but technology is only getting stronger and funding money simply is not going to help. Statistics show that many of the girls who get trafficked are not even aware of what it is. So many girls don’t realize what unsafe situations look like, therefore, educating young girls about human trafficking might really help. Unfortunately, some of the girls who get trafficked do not even have access to education or school. (Human Trafficking in Africa) Therefore, something that has been spoken about enforcing upon these big organizations is using the money they receive to help educate these girls with no school about safety and trafficking. For the people who do have access to a school, adding a part to their curriculum which discusses trafficking and safety would be a great solution. Throughout the last couple of years, there have been some schools that teach about this, even for the faculty. Certain schools that have taught about safety have shown many students being very precautions and understanding of this matter, even in local areas many infographics show lowering in number. People say if we can stretch this education worldwide and normalize it, this could make a colossal difference in the number of trafficking victims. (Training and Educating)
Takeaway
We have seen many goals in trying to stop trafficking because it enforces male superiority, but education seems to be the only one that might help. Overall, trying to educate many girls with only a few people’s help may be very challenging, but if you can take the time to fund money to an organization that can help spread education, talk to your school about adding trafficking to their curriculum, or even simply telling a friend or classmate about safety, we will be sure to see those trafficking numbers lower. These are just things proven to help live a safe and happy life.

My Life Put Into Words

Some things that changed throughout the American Revolution are that by the end they were not being led by the British anymore and they gained freedom. There was also separation from the church and state, also political power was able to be in the power of ordinary men. Plus, inheritance laws were available for both the son and the daughter. Some things that stayed the same throughout the American Revolution was that there was freedom of worship, most of the people involved with politics were white, wealthy, land owning men. The rights for Native Americans, women, and slaves continued to stay low, which means that sadly slavery was still not abolished.
I think that the American Revolution was worth it. I think this way because the changes out way all the things that stayed the same in a positive way. Britain was taking over America and held too much freedom over them. If the American revolution had not happened, then America would still be run by Britain and our world would probably not have evolved to where it is today. Our technology would not have developed to today’s level, slaves and the level of discrimination would have probably been much worse than it is now, and many different rules were implemented which helped America be what it is today. I think this revolution made a huge mark in our history and our world wouldn’t be the same without it.

American Revolution Simplified

The American Revolution made a huge mark in our history, I can’t think of much that would be the same without it. It all began with the French and Indian War, France and Britain were fighting, so quickly Britain was given too much land and too much power. This led to their colonies and patriots (Americans now), not approving of many decisions they made for them. This then led into wars, petitions, shots, and declarations for the next 7 years. Luckily, we are here to break it down for you and simplify the major aspects of this crazy revolution. Hope you enjoy!

The Borden Murders Central Ideas

“The Borden Murders” by Sarah Miller is about a trial of the century that revolved around a murder that happened on Thursday, August 4, 1892. The horrific deaths of Andrew Borden and Abby Durfee Gray brought much chaos for people who had lived in a quiet town. This story is told from the authors perspective with primary sources illustrated through police recordings, newspapers, pictures, and drawings. Lizzie Borden lived an ordinary and privileged life, then one day she stepped into her sitting room and that all came to an end. As the detectives began investigating the murder, Lizzie faced challenges including sexism and had to ensure she had a good reputation on behalf of her father. Along the way, we find out that in this small town there is a neighborhood filled with Portuguese immigrants. Sadly, they were a victim to racism, and had always been seen as criminals. I found this book very enjoyable because I learnt about the way trials worked in the 1800s and seeing many cool images!

The first central idea that I found in “The Borden Murders” was: Judgment and Expectations based on Race. This upset me because innocent people were getting locked up for crimes they didn’t do whereas wealthy white citizens could go ahead living their life knowing they just ruined someone else’s. It wasn’t only citizens at fault, because the police in the late 1800s didn’t listen to people who weren’t white.

Here are some of my ides:

For my second central idea I found I used a similar note taking strategy, I found this one very helpful because it felt like all my ideas were very clear and organized. So as I read further, I saw many examples of sexism happening towards Lizzie Borden. It talks about how she was “supposed” to act a way just because she was a woman. This led the police into being very suspicious because she didn’t fit into the “correct” gender norms.

Here are some of my ideas:

For my third page it goes over the same topics and how I was able to pull all my thinking together and use my central ideas in finding the theme of the book. I tried very hard to connect both ideas into my theme to make it make sense. Both topics are very world spoken about and do connect to each other in ways. They both discriminate against people for no reason and in this book, they were discriminating people based on their sex and race from just expectations or silly stereotypes. So, the theme I found in the story was: Sarah Miller believes that expectations should not be based on your sex or race. Perhaps if people could stop making firsthand judgments or being tricked into believing our close-minded society is right, it would make lives for many so much easier, and could really have a great impact on our world. Even doing things like supporting such groups like “We for She” or “Black Lives Matter”, are the small steps everyone needs to take. Because at the end of the day, if everyone stops looking a people through race or gender, maybe there can be a happy ending.

Here is some of my thinking on how I was able to find that:

Thank you for reading my post! It is well appreciated and if you are interested in the topics I found, you should read “The Borden Murders”!

Poster was made on canva.

The Hate U Give Book Talk

This was one of the best books I have ever read. It was very insightful and I was able to learn a lot from this book. It mentioned many very serous topics in our world that we are still facing to this day. The theme that I discovered was about standing up for yourself and how that can help build your identity. The main character in the book Starr has really developed throughout the book. I feel that if you are not sensitive to certain topics like racism, bullying, and gruesome and violent things, this would be a very good book for you and you will enjoy it very much!
