Cyanotype Photography

Cyanotype photography is a camera-less technique that involves laying an object on paper coated with a solution of iron salts before exposing it to UV light and washing it with water to create stunning white and Prussian blue images. For this project, I used a photo I took on our 798 field trip, capturing the deep composition and structures of a tree. The printed version of the photo highlights an interesting visual dynamic between the tree and the building that wasn’t as apparent when you initially captured the shot. The way the tree appears to be organically growing out of the structure creates a sense of visual tension and contrast. It almost gives the impression that nature is reclaiming or encroaching upon the man-made environment. This unexpected juxtaposition adds a layer of nuance and depth to the overall composition. It invites the viewer to look closer and ponder the relationship between the natural and constructed elements within the frame.
