Central Ideas/Themes of Book “Google it”

The Book I am going to be presenting is “Google it”, written by Anna Crowley Redding. The story is about how two college students named Larry Page and Sergey Brin, who both has a passion for computers and technology, created one of the most innovative and successful businesses in the world, “Google”, starting their search engine with only 4GB worth of processing space and a lego-built server, powering through challenges such as financial struggle, advertisement, Y2k bug, the Chinese Government firewall and so much more. Google evolved from a college assignment into a revolutionary, innovative, multi-billion company. Whilst reading the story, we also experience the hardship of running a company alongside Larry and Sergey, and throughout this read, we discover the importance of not giving up and always chasing after your dreams.

Down here, are my pages of notes that show my thinking about this book, enjoy!

This page was created when I first started to read this book. I am at the first few chapters of the book so trying to identify the theme is quite challenging, so I decided to just list out potential themes/topics/big ideas and issues that stood out to me as far as my progress into this book. I then took two chapters from the book and I tried to connect them to the topics I have just listed out by writing two short jots that showed my thinking. Some examples of topics I’ve listed out were “evolution of the company”, “compromises. sacrifices”, “inventions/innovations”.

Here I showed how I implemented my learning of re-reading into my note-taking about my book. On this page, I jotted down my thoughts about the last page of the book, how it states the main theme of the book, “follow your dreams“. Then I used the re-reading technique to reiterate and build on my thoughts

On this page, I did a “cause and effect map” to show my understanding of the book. Essentially, the “cause and effect map” ‘s purpose is to show the pattern I have noticed through this book. The pattern basically is Google faces a problem, Google solves the problem and improves itself, more and more profit is being generated after the improvement, Google becomes more profitable but also it faces new challenges.

On this page, I focused on trying to devour on the topic/claim “Google should be a concern to us”. I collected four pieces of evidence from the book that supports this topic, then I wrote a short paragraph of reasoning for my claim that was based on my evidence

Thank you for taking the time to read my work!

Book Talk – Aristotle and Dante Discovers the Secrets of the Universe

In this unit, we were put into book clubs and we were assigned to read the book “Aristotle and Dante Discovers the Secrets of the Universe” We read this book in a span of almost 2 weeks, and in class we learned about different note-taking methods to help us better understand the book. In this book talk video I will be talking about the theme of the book and 3 evidences to back my point, and the reason why I would recommend this book to other people

“Of June”

My found poem is based on the short story “Tuesday of the Other June.” by Norma Fox Mazer. The title of my poem is called “Of June.” because my poem is basically June before she stands up for herself. In the story, the main character June was bullied by a girl that shares the same name as her and she was afraid to stand up for herself. I used a highlighter to split the poem into two parts, the first part being when June is with her mother and her mother told her to be kind to everyone and everyone will be kind to her. In this part I decided to choose words that explain June and her mother and their family’s conditions, I included the word alone to stress the fact that June has no one to depend on so she is overdependent on her motherThe second part illustrates how June is getting bullied by the other June, this time I included words that represent their entire conversation. To represent how the other June is being very mean I included words like “fish-eyes”, “stupid.” I spaced the second part like it’s a conversation to match the story of how the other June bullied June, they were arguing back and forth which is another reason why I chose to space the second part this way. My drawing skills were never that great but the artworks in this poem mean something that is connected to the story, for example like the comb I drew on the top right corner, it was mentioned when June’s mother is combing June’s hair. This represents June being with her mother and how they were happy together. The artworks on the bottom represent June bullying June and June is crying instead of standing up for herself which matches the second part.

Faux Leather Challenge [Product Design]©

How did my final product solve my initial problem?

I wish to replace my previous card holder with something new, i decided to make a new card holder using leather. after I’m done it works perfectly fine.

What’s a skill I learned or improved on over the course of this project?

i learned how to sew which is the way of connecting two pieces of leather together to make the card holder, i learned how to hand sew and to use the sewing machine to sew.

If i could start over from the beginning, wha specifically would i“““““““““““““““““““““ change about my project?

i will make the pocket smaller but at the same time i will like to add more pockets to hold more stuff

Leather Project

To be honest, i hate my card holder, its ugly and its orange and its kinda dirty, i want a new one, a new card holder that will instantly help me get 1000 friends. In design this unit Mr. Layman challenged us to solve a problem in our everyday life with only a piece leather and other materials, I want to make a leather card holder.

Temperature Gun Inspired Smell Detecter

In this unit of design, the teacher inquired us to construct a smell detector that is able to be traveled with and its easy to use and inspired by something thats already been invented today. My design is inspired by the temperature gun, I was amazed of how the temperature gun can detect a person’s temperature without any physical contact and that is my main take a way. I want to add this feature to my design so i constructed a gun like device, to use this device, you turn the device on first by pushing the on/off button, then you click reset to make sure its ready to detect, then you pull the trigger and the device will detect the smell around you, say if you have kimchi around you, the screen on the device will show kimchi and how many km you’re away from it. if you want to use the device again just press the reset button then you are good to detect again. The third button has the ability to detect Kendrick, allowing you stay away from him so he won’t kill you with a spoon. To turn off the device just press the on/off button again. the color is shaded with red and blue because at first I was going for a Lakers theme, but I can’t find purpled and gold so yeah.

Lightbox Reflection

For this unit of Product Design, we are assigned to make a light box that reminds un of somewhere that is important to us. The place i choose is LA’s Hollywood sign because first, I’ve lived in LA for a long time and Hollywood is my favorite place to go. Unfortunately because of covid I’m not able to go.

One piece of feedback I’ve gotten on my lightbox is to cut holes in my very back layer because now one of the problems that my li

ghtbox faces is when i open the lights because of back layer not much light can pass through to light up the whole box, the part i would cut out is probably the sky since there is just large chunks of blue as the sky and i messed up the color of the sky so i will cut that part.

Along with the time of making this light box, i’ve learned several skills, I’ve learned how to use Adobe Illustrator to make my layers, to create rounded corners, to turn a icons downloaded online to lines that allows me to edit the icons and make them readable to the laser cutter. Another skill that I’ve learned is to properly use super glue, I’ve learned that if you got super glue on your hands don’t peal it of, it will take off along with your skin, a good way to use super glue is to use tweezers to replace your hand to hold whatever you want to glue.

Something I learned about myself during this project is that i don’t like to double check. I know this because I messed up my laser wood cutting 3 times just because i refuse to double check, i will improve myself by double check every time from now on.

One piece of advice I’d give a future student doing this project would be to plan well before you start making your actual thing, I’ve learned this the hard way, before i thought i’ve done enough planning so i started to construct my layers right away, but when i bring it to the teacher i’ve noticed several crucial mistakes that led to me redoing my layers.

What can Percy do to boost his confidence?

Here is a kid who always gets in to trouble and he always blame himself, although sometimes it’s not because of him, he thinks he can never do well in school. Who could this be that sounds like he is a loser? Meet Percy Jackson.

Percy is a bad kid, too himself yes, in fact he actually showed us in the book, he said, and I quote “Am I a troubled kid? Yeah. You can say that.” this proves Percy is not confident because he classifies himself as a bad kid that can never do well in school. In the real world we face problems and sometimes these problems take us down and makes us think we can never be successful at school or work, but we should never recognize ourselves this way, because it’s important to know that everyone can be good at something and that’s just how we work.

Percy might be a “troubled” kid, but there are things that he can do to help him boost his confidence in order for him to do well in school. Maybe if he fails then he should try harder next time, for example, if he fails his math test, then he should try harder to focus on studying and when the next math test is assigned, he can try again and maybe he can do better.

Another way for Percy to boost his confidence is to recognize his strength, what he is good at, that’s what he should work on. Maybe if he is good at reading Latin, maybe he can do his best on Latin and became a language expert. And when you are good at something, you feel that you are not a loser and you can actually achieve something. Let’s look at an example of me, when I was in third grade, I was bad at math, reading, writing, science etc. I was really depressed, but when I started to play basketball I noticed my strength, i started to play basketball every day and I gained confidence and I was improving on many subjects

Just a reminding, Percy can boost his confidence by trying harder next time when he fails, and he can find his strength and work on it so he feels he can be good at something.

To sum this up, Percy can try again when he fails and find something he’s good at to boost his confidence in order to do well in school.

Our Stories Makes History

During the COVID-19 outbreak that is happening around the world and we’re all stuck at home, we started a new unit called “Our Stories Makes History”, it’s about adding your photos, daily journals, and the articles you’ve read about the COVID-19 or just anything that you recorded during this period of time. To organize my work, I started using Canva because, first Canva is a website that is focused on making posters or timelines or collages or anything related digitally, second this is a website that I’m comfortable with using. I think this primary source will show people how it feels like to be stuck at home for a very long time and how it feels like to have someone in your family who is sick and not sure if they got the virus, or just how to be protecting yourself from the virus. Something that went well in this unit is using canva to create my work and something that’s challenging is to write a diary every single day there isn’t anything to write about when you’re stuck at home and staring at a computer screen all day.
