Personal relationship and ADHD two things that greatly effected Percy. Percy had personal relationship with not a lot of people. They effected Percy, for example him being very loyal and protected Grover and being stressed out because the lack of personal relationship. ADHD affected him much more than personal relationship. He got expelled school after school because he got distracted. Having horrible grades in school because he’s not paying attention and blurting out.

Percy has some positive relationship. Although he has some, it is clearly not enough. Percy has positive relationship with Grover, his mom, and Mr. Brunner. But he also has a lot of negative relationship with people. Like Nancy Bobofit, smelly Gabe, and Nancy Bobofit’s friends, with so much negative relationship it is bad for him. According to why personal relationships are important by university of Minnesota, people with positive relationship deal with stress better. Percy on the other hand has barley any positive relationship, so Percy has a lot of stress. A place that showed this is on page 18 “I got so frustrated I threw the Cambridge guide to Greek mythology across the dorm room.” Showing Percy was stressing and eventually got so frustrated he threw the book in rage. Also, Percy is a very loyal friend. On page 3 it says “I’m going to kill her. I mumbled.” He said it while he was on probation so he knew if he did anything wrong, he would be expelled. But even with that. He was willing to stand up for his friend. Not to mention on page 2 when they were about to go it says, “But Mr. Brunner, our Latin teacher, was leading this trip, so I had hopes.” It shows that Percy feels strong relationship with Mr. Brunner and was looking forward to the field trip. Also, according to article by a Newsela article. “friends are like families and may be better than the real ones.” Mr. Brunner is one of the only teachers that Percy likes. So that’s why it gave him hope. Personal relationship affected Percy a lot. He protected Grover and was excited for the field trip only because Mr. Brunner was leading it.

Percy’s ADHD also is a problem. He had a lot of time were symptoms of ADHD showed. For example, when he fired the revolutionary cannon, falling into the pool from the catwalk, pushing Nancy Bobofit, doing bad in class and getting distracted, and the infamous will you shut up line. Both the cannon and the falling into pool are getting distracted and fidgeting. According to neurodiversity: a different view of ADHD, “getting easily distracted and avoiding activities that require focus are also symptoms.” And “these symptoms include fidgeting, difficulty playing quietly or waiting for turn and blurting out answers in class.” And in page 2 in the book it says, “like at my 5th grade school, when we went to the Saratoga battlefield, had this accident with a revolutionary cannon. I wasn’t aiming for the school bus, but of course I was expelled anyway. And before that, at my 4th grade school when we took a behind the scene tour of the marine shark pool, I sort of hit the wrong lever on the catwalk and our class took an unplanned swim.” This both showed that Percy was bored and got distracted and did not pay attention and wandered around and with curiosity he pulled the lever. What Percy could have done was tell an adult that this was boring, and they could have made it more interesting. Also, Percy was doing very bad in class because in page 17 it says, “my grade slipped from Ds to Fs.” And according to neurodiversity: a different view of ADHD it states,” not paying attention to detail or making careless mistakes in school and not listening most of the time.” Percy most likely payed very less attention to school and make a lot of careless mistakes. And finally, the famous will you shut up line. According to the article “…and blurting out answers in class.” Percy was blurting out and was not thinking about it. so, it came out louder than he expected. ADHD effected Percy a lot he got in trouble countless times because of it.

Personal relationship and ADHD greatly affected Percy. But Percy can learn to control it. mainly ADHD. Percy should expand his personal relationships, because of the amount of stress he has. Percy made a lot of mistakes. But those mistakes can be avoided easily if he just controlled his temper or talked to a trusted adult .
