In the story “Thank You, Ma’am” by Langston Hughes, the main character Roger has an internal conflict of a difficult decision between if he wants to run away from the open door of Ms. Jones’s house or, does he want to just stay. I used Microsoft Word and Canva to create this found poem.
Roger tried to steal Ms. Jones’s purse to buy a pair of blue suede shoes. Ms. Jones’s finds out and brings him to her house for a dinner and taught him the why he was wrong. While Roger was in Ms. Jones’s house, the door was left open, and he had a hard choice between if he wanted to run away while Ms. Jones’s wasn’t watching or would he just choose to stay. In the poem, I put in the multiple times when Roger saw the door was open and making his thought in his mind. The background picture is a picture of a door, which would relate to the left open door in the story. The first two lines of the poem “she dragged the boy inside” and “‘wash your face’” is bigger than all the others, because it is introducing the story in the poem of the conflict between Ms. Jones’s and Roger that leads to the internal conflict of Roger. The line “the door was open” and “the woman wasn’t watching” is bolder than the others to emphasize the importance of Roger noticing the open door and how Ms. Jones’s wasn’t watching. I added in that Roger said he wanted a pair of blue suede shoes because Roger tried to steal Ms. Jones’s purse because he wanted money for it.
Roger has a hard time making a decision between if he wants to stay or go, noticing multiple times that the door was left open, and Ms. Jones’s wasn’t watching him. The decision he is going to make will influence his future and his thoughts.
