Habitat Mini Project—Polar Regions

Heres my thinglink:

Reflection:

    1. My greatest take away is  learning to make models and understand energy. Because before 6th grade I don’t know about those energy transformations, making CERs and drawing models in a correct way. I got many new science knowledge.
    2. I think I need more work on writing a good CER and learning new things in science. Also what I’d like to do is being about to do science experiments. Sometimes I still need more work in reviewing the knowledge I’ve learned.

Our Stories Make History

Our Stories Make History—Reflection

In our humanities unit “Our Stories Make History”, we recorded many things that relate to us and affects us during the period of the coronavirus (Covid-19). In this project, we learned to find reliable sources that relate to coronavirus so that we won’t be fooled by fake news and some bias. I organized my project by sections, I started by putting the collage as an introduction to my experience in Beijing. The second section are my emotional changes which are the diary entries and emotional timeline. My performance piece is related to the timeline. I organized it this way because it would help my audiences understand my feelings and the events that happened more, how some projects like the performance piece relate to others like the timeline.

My primary source can be useful for future historians because it shows how people live through the coronavirus period. This source can help for people in the future to learn more about what virus like this might cause, if it repeats (hopefully don’t), we’ll know better about what to do. My source can tell how some worries are brought while we can still be living really nicely. There are some basic facts in my source about what happened, how e-learning was like and how schools were closed. I personally don’t relate to the virus very much, some people have family members infected by the virus and some are infected themselves, others will need to learn about those to.

Though out this unit of creating a primary source, one of the things that I’m proud of is that I get to explore a lot of different websites: Canva, Book creator, Newsbank, The beijinger, etc. I had improved a lot on problem solving skills when some of the things don’t work in certain times. I also am proud of improving my skills of writing a diary, before I did write diary, but they are just to keep track of what I did that day, it doesn’t encloud a lot of emotions. Doing daily journaling may be tiring but helps me to improve my feelings expressing skills and skills on maintaining doing journaling every single day. A challenged is definitely internet problems, our WIFI often don’t work and I need to organize my time and prepare for a sudden internet problem. Another challenge was that I sometimes spend too much time trying to make things perfect, I need to learn to get better at knowing what needs to be perfect while some others don’t.

Creative Performance Assignment

Here is the performance I made, it is sort of a collage with 4 things that happened in this period of time with the coronavirus. The first section (top left) is about how we canceled our trip to Gubei Water Town, I was really disappointed because I was really looking forward to it.

The second section (top right) is about e-learning, I’m surrounded with work and sometimes get quite stressful. Things I miss include not being around my friends unable to go out and have bubble tea, ice-cream and sushi.

The third section (bottom left) is about how every one if wearing mask.

The fourth section (bottom right) is about my trip to Hebei, Cangzhou, my grandmother’s house. I went there at the beginning of Chinese New Year and had a nice time.

The middle is a birdcage inspired by an artwork I painted in art class, inside is our house and house we’re all locked inside.

Early Humans and Us Thinglink Reflection

This is a reflection on Early Humans and Us project I did in humanities class.

What I think I did well on was my infographic because I really like the format of a timeline I did and the information was short and quite related and useful.

What I think didn’t went as expected was that when I researched, I researched the wrong information that was about food but not so related to my big research question. This shortened my research time.

I would change my oral reflection video because I think I didn’t use enough hand movement, got lost in the middle and was kind of reading the script, which is boring for the audience.

Early Humans and Us research project

In humanities class, we did a research project about how early humans and modern humans are connected from three aspects: community, technology and diet. My research topic is diet and my research question is how does the use of fire or heat affect our relationship with food throughout history. Here is my Thinglink project.

Prevent heat transfer—Cup Insulator

I think our insulator works very well since the difference is about only 6 celsius. The foil works very well in the insulator because in the can experiment and the penguin project, it all worked nicely. Our also works because we got cotton inside the box next to the cup and that makes a new thick layer to stop heat from escaping. The foil on the sides of the lid are for stopping heat to escape from the gap between the body and the lid. Overall, most heat is trapped inside the prototype so our prototype works well.

I am proud of us making an insulator that works the best in our class so I think it’s very successful, it trapped most heat.

Something I would do differently is making our insulator easier to remove from cup because after 20 mins, the handle of the mug turned super hot and when taking the mug out, the water might spill. To do that, I think I could make the insulator wider but I’m worried if doing that would decrease the temperature of the liquid inside of the mug.

The hardest part of this project is finding the right material because we don’t have some of the materials we planed to use (example: mylar) and we has to use something else instead.

Metaphor Map

We did a metaphor map project in humanities where we use a land form in nature and connect it with things in our lives using metaphor. We draw our map on an A3 paper and have to include: the tittle, legend(key) and compass rose. Here are the metaphor’s I have and the meaning of each one.

Chinese is a plain because I think it’s not hard, not that fun and just normal.

Piano is a mountain because I’ve been climbing for 4-5 years and finally finished piano 8th grade.

Reading is a valley because reading makes me feel calm and far away from the mountains.

My worries are a river because there are always worries coming in and coming out.

Time is volcano because I often ran out of time and got really stressed out.

My room is an oasis because after a tiring day, it is where I get refreshed and relaxed.

Badminton is and island because it’s not big but quit important.

School is a forest because the amount of things going on is like the forest of trees.

Homework is a desert because there always more and more and more to do.

Ocean are my thoughts because there are always ideas, thoughts deep like ocean.

Design class cardboard arcade

In design class be made cardboard arcade games. My game is a Plinko, the players can have a choice of a marble game and a pingpong game.

Our game’s big obstacle was finding the perfect material to cover the game so the ball don’t fall out from the obstacles in the game. We ended with a plastic transparent material which I think is like plastic bag.

One thing that I like to change is I drew line on the games so I know where to glue the obstacles but the obstacles didn’t ended up right where I drew the lines so the purple lines are still visible in the games and that does not look good.

Overall, I think this project is successful because I really like our games, not too much come to our during the actual presenting part for the fourth graders but all of the people that came enjoyed our game. Plus, the game turned out the way I expected.

I am From a Black and White Secret Garden and Boxes of Puzzles

This is my Where I’m From poem we worked on in class. We started by looking some Where I’m From poems other people or authors wrote, it’s is hard to understand at first. Then we  listed 7 different things that is special to  ourselves in different categories. Then we made the words into sentences and into the poem we have now. Ms. Shannon showed us the poem a student from last year did for example. I think coming up with some things that is special to me is quit hard especially the special items.
