One Image Evaluation

This image is “Martha’s Vineyard” taken by Aaron Siskind in 1954.

I chose this image because I like the composition where the bottom right edge is asymmetrical, and I love how that part greatly contrasts the white background.

I find the deep contrast between the bottom right rocks and the background unusual because the contrast is so great.

I think the shape is the most important because the shape is very apparent and is very three-dimensional due to the shape and its contrast to the background. I also like how the shape is positioned in an interesting way to create depth, to make the piece more interesting.

Siskind’s photos are abstract because although you could know what the object in the photos are, it is hard to understand the meaning behind it, making the piece ambiguous and abstract.

I like the different textures and contrasts shown through Siskind’s work, especially how his photographs feel very raw and organic. I will incorporate his raw and organic style in my work, by zooming in and paying more attention to the details of objects.
