Artist Statement

Maggie Li

Maggie Li, born in 2007 in Poplar Bluff, USA, is a photographer and mixed media artist. Her work challenges viewers’ perceptions and invites them to reconsider their biases. Li explores a wide range of subjects in a multi-layered way, often involving physical interaction. She employs creative game tactics, transforming everyday objects and commenting on oppressive themes in contemporary society. Based in Beijing, Li continues to push the boundaries of art and photography.

Red Photos

 

I chose the first photo because I loved the lighting from one side, the focus and clearness on the man’s face, and the composition of the man’s face with the smoke adding interest.

I chose the second photo because I liked the composition of the man on the left, I liked how the glass added an interesting element where some parts of the reflection were clear while other parts were foggy from the heat of the smoke. I also think that the row of spices hanging above the man in a straight line adds color and makes it more interesting.

I chose the last photo because even though this photo was an accident, I liked the contrast of the form and darkness of the man against the background. The background is in focus, while the man is kind of blurry, I think that that looks interesting.

Photographer for Street Photography

The photographer that I will be choosing is Saul Leiter because I like his use of composition and color. He has many street photos that all have a bold and vintage style and he usually likes to take them on rainy and lit up places.

I decide to chose this photo as my reference because I like the interesting composition that shows depth between what is close and far. I also like the use of contrast where the light parts are light and bold and the dark parts are black. I think that Leiter has a iconic use of color which is bold but also vintage, which is beautifully captured in this photo. I think that it is also unique since it doesn’t have the typical buildings and street ways as shown in typical street photography but shows a close up of a car.

Set 2: Red Photos/ Triptych

I chose these three photos as my final photos because I think they capture the style of Webb the best, where each of the photos has a sense of strong contrast represented through the interior of the car. I also think that the vintage colors were well captured through the orange-browns, dusty blues, and purples. I also think that the photos represent motion well because of the way the interior of the car is positioned in the foreground while the background is the moving roads and scenery.

Set 2: Green Photos

I chose these photos as my green photos because these photos are not just better but because it better fits the style of Webb’s, where is strong contrast and vintage colors. For instance, the first photo is a strong example that represents Webb’s style because the interior of the cars are dark and graphic against the scenery outside.

Set 2: Yellow Photos

I chose these photos as my yellow photos because I think they give a range of photos that all fit the same aesthetic of the car, road, and the vast mountain lands. I think that these photos all fit in the same style of Webb because most of these photos have a strong contrast, with vintage colors. Also, I believe that most of these photos have a strong sense of motion and is dynamic similar to Webb’s photographs.

Red Photos

These three final pieces ultimately highlight the style of Aaron Siskind: the blurry, bold, and organic style as shown through the pieces above. Eventhough I think these photographs are well done and really capture the variety of styles that are included in Siskind’s work, I think that for my triptych, I could focus on collecting pieces that fit one of the three styles rather than just a variety so that it would look more cohesive. For my next shoot, I would want to improve on the cohesiveness of the pieces and to emphasize Aaron Siskind’s close-up abstract style even more.
