Amelia Lost: Unique Life of a Diverse Pilot

Amelia Lost (The Life and Disappearance of Amelia Earhart) by Candace Fleming is a biography that will catch your attention. Unlike most biographies/autobiographies, this book will earn your curiosity.

Before I read the book, I had very little interest before discovering this book. I thought it was just a usual, plain, and boring, non-fiction book spitting out facts of one’s life, but I was wrong. “Amelia Lost” is one of those uncommon books you will ever find. The story is told from a third-person point of view, containing the early life of Amelia, her achievements, school life, love life, etc. In addition, the book also includes many entertaining facts that you didn’t know, which makes the book even more engaging. In our book club, we made some analyses and recognizations of the main issue and idea of the book. Below are some of my notebook pages that explain our thought and process while reading ‘Amelia Lost.’

The first idea or issue our book club came across was ‘Gender Equality.’ Amelia’s childhood reveals discrimination between genders. This idea of Gender Equality was unknown but the initial thought was commonly expected. Amelia’s childhood was surrounded by criticisms, differing from what life is like now in most parts of the world. As you can see from below, this is a synthesis page that includes some evidence of Gender Inequality.

As we read further into the book, we discovered some of the conflicts between relationships. Trust can be one of the most vital and necessary components in order to maintain a healthy relationship. Amelia was strong-willed and tough. She never cried about minor problems and she neglected all the nasty comments people made about her.

Below is a “Cause and Effect Chart” that represents the outcomes of some actions, which results in new ideas or issues.

As we dug further in the book, we realized that the key idea was about ‘Victory and Fame’. Amelia Earhart is known for her achievements and her dedication to flying. Throughout Earhart’s flying journey, she made numerous achievements.

In Lesson 8, we focused on how setting and description relate to the main topic/idea. Below is an excerpt I found on pages 74-75, containing a descriptive scene of Amelia’s flight. For example, on this page, the author is elaborative on the setting and shows the mood by giving an account of the gadgets resting in the cockpit. From the beginning, a peaceful and tranquil mood is introduced. As we read further on, it becomes more intense and dramatic, changing the whole mood to a frightening and anxious atmosphere.

To end off, making connections is essential while reading. Aspects of the book often relate to some other parts, which is what creates a story plot. As shown, this page is full of connections between old ideas and new ideas.

In conclusion, the unit “Stranger Than Fiction” had been enjoyable and has taught us various ways to interpret and synthesize our ideas.

Thank u for reading :))

Contemporary Fiction Book Talk – Ghost

Recently in humanities, we started our contemporary fiction book club unit. I was given the book Ghost written by Jason Reynolds, which grabbed my attention and encouraged me to keep reading.

The past few days of this book club have been enjoyable. We were taught a variety of ways to dig deep down into the text and discover implicit criticisms/issues. Throughout the past week, we learned various ways to use charts and mind maps to connect our thinkings. From all the annotations and analysis, I have concluded a concise summary of the book and a brief explanation of the theme. The link below is my book talk presentation, please enjoy:
