The message of my photography creation will be visual awareness of the natural life. The environmental aspects can be seen everywhere but the beauty is what people don’t acknowledge as much. I want the audience to feel gloomy and naturally emotive as a response to my collection of photos. For inspiration, I will try to find and develop my ideas by looking for photographers that uses the technique of straight photography and expresses beauty with simple subjects. I want to find photographs with natural color schemes, low saterations, irregular patterns, and soft focus for a gloomy effect. In my opinion, distorted beauty is the best way to emphasize the beauty of nature because of its diversed appearances and unique textures that expresses different feelings.
Which ”element(s)” is/are best represented in each of the pictures below?
Tone and shape are best represented in the pictures because most of them have the subject represented as a shape that is shaded in a darker tone.
Compare your images with the drawings. Which ones worked and why?
Drawings 1, 9, 10, and 11 all worked out pretty successfully because they were easier to capture. They were all subjects seen in our surroundings and there’s not much technique needed in order to make the subject stand out.
Which ones didn’t work so well, and why?
Number 3 didn’t work out very well because it was a bit difficult to find a subject that was concentrated with lots of different dots but also spacing in between them.
Pure glass, because it fits with the theme and the subject of the photo. The Pure glass expresses enlightenment and delicateness with simple objects and lighting without any complex objects
Albert Renger-Patzsch uses simple objects and backgrounds to capture the beauty of the lines, shapes, patterns, and tones. He uses lighting at a certain angle to create shadows that have a gradient tone of light and darkness. The overlapping shapes and lines have a repeating pattern but different lighting to it.
Pictorialism Movement in photography is the expression of the beauty, tonality, and structure of a subject. The photographers use techniques that emphasize the aesthetic of a picture and show their works as a role of art.
Straight photography movements are usually photos of the real-world nature. This type of photography attempts a scene with sharp focus and detail. It was a popular technique amongst photographers because it was a simple method of expressing the aesthetics of real life with clear detail and also demonstrating a deeper meaning to the emotions the photos express.
Edward Weston and Aaron Siskind were both photographers who took photos of wildlife and earth nature. Edward’s photographs were based on close-ups of a specific natural phenomenon while Aaron’s were more of the nature of his surroundings. Therefore, the two photographers were influenced by the style of the straight photography movement. Their photos both emphasized a sharp focus on the subject and pattern of the format.
The creations of Andreas Gursky and Uta Barth are known as abstract because they both demonstrate photos using materials that most people can’t identify specifically what they are. They also use a variety of abstract techniques such as blur, close-up, and geometrics. However, they don’t necessarily count as straight photographers because most of their works do not include sharp scenes of a subject in detail.
What do you think is meant by “Abstract photography can be defined as capturing images in which the subject isn’t the most interesting element”?
Even though the subject is the main focus of the camera, the surroundings could be more outstanding to the audience because the background expresses a different emotional energy compared to the subject
Now write your own definition of abstract photography add to your blog:
Abstract photography are pictures that express a mixture of emotions that simple words can’t explain. Abstract photography serves a stronger and more purposeful meaning the audience may not understand.
1. When might it be a good idea to deliberately break the rules?
When you want the audience to focus on one subject of the photo, for example, putting the subject in the middle to add full emphasis to the subject.
2. Do you think it is possible to break rules if you don’t know they exist? Give reasons for your answer.
Yes, If you don’t know the rules there is a higher chance that you will be able to break them because most of the time the photos we take have important content. This means that we are more likely to take pictures that have the subject placed in the middle which breaks the rule of three.
3. Can a ‘bad’ picture ever be ‘great’? – How important is the context in photography? (context= why a picture was taken, when or where it was taken, and what message you were trying to make)
A ‘bad’ picture can be ‘great’ if it communicates an idea essentially. The context of a photo is basically the idea or the symbol behind this picture, it expresses what the picture is missing or something the audience wouldn’t understand by only looking at it.
How is context important in Photography? Reference the picture above in your answer. Does the word “Wrong” make a difference? Why?
Knowing the context not only means that the viewer is able to admire the beauty of this photo, but also comprehend the backstory behind it or even the amount of work and time the photographer spends on this photo.
Gather pictures or videos for tutorials or expanders. Go down to the design lab to collect any materials needed
Day #2
Plan: Draw a rough sketch of the prototype and start building the actual product. The main part is to find out how to turn on the light bulb
We’re currently done with building the bottom part of the wires where the lamp is located at. The lamp is made out of a licker version of paper, and the light bulb is also the average size we wanted it to be. Unlike the video, I replaced the glass bottle with a towel paper roll and used the battery switch to turn on the light bulb. The lab didn’t have a finial to connect the lamp and the light bulb, so we used wires to sustain them together. My partner and I stuck plenty of straps of metal wires to prevent the lamp from falling, and I tried to make the cordless light bulbs by watching tutorials online. However, I did not get so much accomplished with the light bulb because I had trouble learning how to make it light up.
Materials needed:
Wires
toilet paper roll
light bulb
light bulb base
LED lights (2-4)
paper (20cm)
cardboard (10×10)
volts (positive & negative)
batteries (2-6)
light switch
Day # 3
Plan: Find the best number of batteries for the light bulb and install it on the actual lamp
Since the light bulb needed more energy than batteries, we couldn’t find a way to make it cordless and there was only one base left. As a replacement, we used an LED light or LED strip if there is absolutely no way for the light bulb to work. The LED light lit up pretty successfully with only three batteries. However, the LED lights were not bright enough to go through the lamp so we either have to rely on the LED strip or only the base of the light bulb.
Day #4
Plan: Build the light bulb and structure it on the lamp
During this class, we were finally able to light up the light bulb with wires and add a switch to it with the help of the teachers. The light bulb needs six batteries to light up, the black wire goes to goes in the negative hole and the red wire goes into the positive one. We’ve also cut out the base of the lamp which is a piece of cardboard. For our final product, the batteries will either be connected on the toilet paper roll or the base.

Now our main task is to find a way to connect the light bulb at the top and find out where the batteries will be located. We also need to find a way to make the wires go through the bottom so that the light bulb can receive. the energy. Here is a plan of how it might work out.
#Day 5
Plan: Finish my prototype and start testing it
Since the negative electric wire wasn’t as long as the toilet paper roll, we had to melt it and connect it to a brand-new one using a separate wire and electric tape.
We’ve finally wrapped up the light bulb structure and successfully connect it to the lamp. The base is hot glued to the lamp and the battery box is tapped to the base. However, we haven’t decided what to do with the switch yet. We plan that it might punch two holes into the toilet paper roll and push it in there or just dangle in the air. The only thing we’re missing now is the shade which is going to cover up the wires and make it look like an actual lamp.
The initial product has paper wrapped around the top which covers the wires and has the switch punched into the toilet roll. The bases and the batteries are also covered up.
