Why is engineering important?
Engineering is important because engineering helps us answer questions.
What was your challenge?
I think my challenge was that it was really hard to get just the right number of things. I think that it was challenging to also to try to get the best possible way to get close enough to filter the water.
Why did you choose that design?
I’d seen it before and so had Valentina and I’d tested something like that before as well but with more materials and not quite the same water, so we thought that if you were on a deserted island you’d most likely be able to find all of those materials.
How does it work?
You pour the water through the plastic bottle and hold the cup underneath, ideally there would be something to connect the cup and the bottle but that would much warder to create that this.
Was your design successful?
After a couple of tries, yes it was. It cleaned the water well and the water looked much less murky after that.
How might you change your apparatus if had the opportunity? (If no redesign)
I would’ve changed it by adding something to connect the cup to the bottle of else you need a really flat surface or an extra pair of hands…
(If redesign) Was your redesign successful?
Yes, our redesign was very effective, it made the water less murky and the sand didn’t help so we had to get rid of it, the other this that helped was the added cotton, they helped the filtering tremendously.
