ELO Day 1: Hong Luo Si

On the first day of “Through the Lens,” we traversed to Hong Luo Si, a Buddhist Temple in Huairou.

I walked around the temple with five friends, Angela, Heidi, Mia, Jaslyn, and Emily, and spent most of the time turtle-watching. There was a turtle pond filled to the brim with large, grumpy-looking turtles swimming in a pond covered in coins. The turtles piled on the rock in the centre of the pond, and every few minutes the pile of turtles would topple over.

Aside from turtle watching, my group wandered around the temple, admiring the architecture. I liked the green and red designs in the wood overhangs and especially loved how every couple of metres there was a blossomed flower in a. pot.

Hong Luo Si also had some great hiking experiences, although my group opted for toboggan rides up and down the mountain instead. This photo was taken while we tried to find the toboggan “station,” in order to ride up the mountain.
