Before the context was added, the whole photo was flat and dull, whether the grayish color or the ambiguous topic. The main object and the composition are unclear.  After the text was added, it gave the photo meaning. The audience can get the information the photographer tried to show, leaving space for the audience to think. The dullness of the photo, combined with the title, made it even more interesting by adding a sense of humor.

Yes, it is possible to break rules you don’t know. The existence of rules is for people to follow; when you don’t know what the rule is, you won’t have a thing to follow, so breaking rules you don’t know is possible.

Can a ‘bad’ picture ever be ‘great’? – How important is context in photography? 

In my opinion, if a photo has its purpose and is successfully delivered to the audience, then it’s a “good photo.” Context could have a massive impact on photos because it could give the photo meaning and purpose. Furthermore, context is able to make the audience think and understand the information the photographer tried to show, which is known as breaking the forth wall.
