The American Revolution

1765, the first French and Indian War started the American Revolution between  The United States and Great Britain. And later the Sugar Act which was passed by the British parliament had huge affects on the peasants and colonists in America who were not able to afford sugar anymore.

After a few years, in 1770 the Boston Massacre occurred. People protested for the unfairness and “Taxation without representation” that had been happening in the past few years, however this caused Innocents to be killed on the King Street in Boston by the red army.

Finally, in 1783 the Peace Treaty was signed by all representatives of the Great Britain, Unitate States, French, and Spain. The United State was finally recognized as a independent country, and ended the Revolutionary War between the United States and Great Britain. It also brought back many things, and reduced tax which allowed colonists or citizens to again able to afford many things.

Continuity:

The Revolution did not have a major impact socially and economically, especially for people who were part of the ruling classes, they remained in the ruling class and upper classes. Even though there were laws preventing slavery, slavery was still not abolished after the revolution. However later in the North, it was abolished shortly after the revolution. Slavery in the south stayed the same. White, rich men was still in charge.

Meanwhile in the American colonies, it was really rare for women to pursue various events and jobs, such as printers, innkeepers, merchants, and teachers. Women were excluded from political activities, but only a few women, like Mercy Otis Warren and Abigail Adams, entered the political arena as public figures. Even though many laws were added to protect women’s rights, the position of women did not change much in society.

Change:

There are many things that have changed after the American Revolution. Firstly, The Revolution opened new markets and new trading relationships between different countries. Secondly, It expanded territories for invasion and settlement, and the Americans began to build their own manufacturers. Then, having religious freedom. Separation of church and state. Not everyone has the same beliefs and religion, and not everyone goes to the same church. Lastly, The independence of the United States which was the greatest consequence of the American Revolution. As a result of the revolution and the Treaty of Paris, the United States was recognized by Great Britain finally as an independent nation. The British also gave up a large amount of territory which we now classify as the American Midwest.

Was it worth it?

I feel like if you see it from different perspectives you would receive multiple and different answers.  Firstly, from a American perspective they would say that it was worth it, because after the American Revolution America finally gained independence, and freedom away and not controlled by Britain anymore. Similarly, citizens would also see this revolution worth it because  it succeeded for a shared commitment to working out in agreed ways, and citizens/colinists were also not in control of the British Government anymore, they were also able to use the control of the political structures in anyway.

However, if it was from a British perspective they might say that it wasnt worth it. Throughout the American revolution Britain spent a huge amount of money fighting in the Reovlutionary War. During this time taxes had also been raised, for Britain had relied on that because others were severely interrupted caused by war.

“Unbroken” Laura Hillenbrand

Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand is a Literary non-fiction book of survival, resilience, and redemption. As a boy the main character Louie was always in trouble, however with the help of his brother Pete he changed his life and energy towards running, he also dreams to join the Olympics, then after his hard work he later qualified for the 1936 Olympics. 1939 when World War 2 starts Louie joined in the military. Then After his plane crashes in the Pacific he surprisingly survives for 47 days in a raft. Until he was captured by the Japanese Navy, and through his resilience and toughness he successfully survived after World War 2 ended.

I really liked this book, and as you read through my notes you would find out the central ideas, and themes that I found through reading this book.

In my first notebook page the three central idea I found in my book were, Belief is a power, Resilience can change people’s life, and having Redemption can achieve you goal.
Having the three of this can achieve ones dream and make them succeed in different difficulties throughout life. Having to belief in something, believing it is true and wanting to do it, then being resilience being tough and thinking positive when going through difficult moments, lastly having redemption, through your actions achieving your goal. “Action speaks louder than words.” Having the three of this helped Louie throughout this book, which I also gave more information below in my notebook page.

In this page, also what we did in class, I more deeply explained the central idea, and pushed myself into deeper thinking of how resilience can change people’s life, and examples of Louie in the book, which helped him succeed towards his dream, and successfully survive World War 2.

In this page, I showed what kind of person Louie was, and how the author presented this character in this book.

In both pages shows the theme of this book, Optimistic, attitude, positive mindset falling in one category, self-respect and dignity in another. From many evidence given in the book, all showing how Louie was positive and optimistic. Also having confidence in self, behaving with honor and dignity, not easily giving up, and always earns his respect.

This page shows the social and personal issue, World War 2 caused many people falling into poverty. Louie also loosed some of his respect in the Japanese military.

Here, I took time rereading, and trying to find ideas then pull them together, and make connections between then when at first may not seem to be connected. At first it was a bit challenging but then after many times I found out a connection that was actually really obvious, World War 2 was always related throughout the book. This also connects towards the theme and central idea in this book, caused by World War 2 many people felled into poverty, loosed families, and like Louie captured by the Japanese navy and lived in harsh conditions trying everyday just to survive. Below in my notebook page gave more examples of how World War 2 have been connecting throughout the book.

“The Hate U Give” Book talk

This is a book talk of the book “The Hate U Give” by Angie Thomas. We had to find the theme of this book and use 3 evidence to explain why we believe it is the theme, and also give a brief summary of the book without any spoiling. In this book, it examines the way society uses stereotypes of black people to justify, violence and racism against them, and the main theme that I found in this book is standing up for yourself, and what you believe is right, being who you are, and don’t be ashamed of who you are and what color you are. This book really connects to what people are still facing in some parts of the world these days when people are not always equal and where racism could always come in terms. The main character Starr in this book has also developed her identity throughout this book, finally deciding to stand up for her community and for the people and friends of hers who have died unexplainedly. I really enjoyed this book, it gives you an insight into what people that have different skin colors had gone through, and how racism has affected their lives. I hope you enjoy this book as well as I do!

Am I a Humanist?

I believe that I am a Humanist. Because I feel like everyone should have the equal right to make their own choices and the value of life and desire. Also asking questions to gain a deeper understanding of how many things work. Therefore I believe that I am a Humanist.

Found poem-Tuesday of the other June

This found poem was created by the words of “Tuesday of the other June.”

In this story there are two main characters both called June. (To distinguish them one of them is called the other June) June was having an external conflict, character vs character with the other June. When they first met and knew they had same names both were very shocked and unhappy, so named each other mean nicknames “fish eye,” the other June even physically hurt June, However June could not do anything about the other Junes bullying because her mom told her not to get in trouble, therefor he did not want to betray her mom’s words. Later in the story June and her family was moved to another street, June was extremely excited about this move, he thought this move would make her stay away from seeing the other June. However, once she got to school in class, she saw the other June in the same school has her, now not only during swimming class would she see the other June, she would see the other June every day and everyday was going to be an awful day for June. One day morning when June got in class the other June was starting to bully her again, it said, “She frisked down the aisle stabbing the pencils in the air toward me.” then June finally said “NO!” June betrayed her mother’s words, because he really did not want to get bullied by the other June anymore, June pushed away the other June’s hands that were holding the pencil. This is also another part where they happened to have an external conflict between the two characters, physically and mentally. Therefor I chose this part from line 85-94 where the two characters had and external conflict, it really symbolized what an external conflict meant, and gave sufficient evidence from the two characters’ behaviors.

How ADHD and Positive relationship impact to Percy’s choices—– Rebecca Wang

How ADHD and Positive relationship impact to Percy’s choices

Percy is a character from a book called Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief. This is going to talk about Percy’s choices from chapters 1-3. ADHD impacts Percy’s choices because he gets distracted easily and likes blurting out answers in class. This could be improved by medicine, medicine can help improve Percy’s focus and behavior, but for some people, these medicines can cause unwanted side effects. So, another way is to go outside for often, ADHD impacts Percy so Percy should ask his teachers to go outside more often. A positive relationship could also help Percy with his health. Percy could spend more time with family and friends, and when he misses someone for example, (his mom) he could write more letters to them, which can reduce him missing his friend and family.

ADHD impacts Percy’s choices because he gets distracted easily and likes blurting out answers in class. On page 5 Percy shouted,” Will you shut up!?!?!?” — It came out louder than I meant.” blurting out answers is a feature of ADHD, in the article it said, “These symptoms include fidgeting, difficulty playing quietly or not waiting for a turn and blurting out answers in class.” also in page 22, Percy said, “Thanks,” I blurted. “Thanks a lot, sir, for reminding me.” both quotes are a feature of ADHD which is, “getting easily distracted, not waiting for a turn and blurting out answers in class.” This could be improved by treating medicine. Medicine can help improve your focus and behavior, but for some people, these medicines can cause unwanted side effects, so Percy could also improve like people with ADHD, in the Newsela article it said, “People with ADHD also do their best in a stimulating environment. They like to be outdoors and move their bodies.” ADHD impacts Percy so Percy should ask his teacher to let him go outside more often, to help reduce his ADHD.

A positive relationship could help Percy with his health. On page32-33, Percy said, “My mother can make me feel good just by walking into the room,” and in the Newsela article, researchers said, “According to research by psychologist Sheldon Cohen, college students who reported having strong relationships were half as likely to catch a common cold.” On page 17, Percy said, “I was homesick. I wanted to be with my mom in our little apartment on the Upper East Slide.” Percy missed his mom, in the Newsela article It gave very good examples to how you can feel better when your friends or family lives far away “Feelings of sadness and disappointment may arise if dear friends live far away. However old- fashioned letter writing can be one way to reconnect.”  A positive relationship could help Percy with his health so Percy should spend more time with friends and families, and if he misses his mom, he could write more letters to his mom.

Overall, this was about how ADHD and Positive relationship impacted to Percy’s choices. ADHD is impacting Percy of how he makes choices in school, for example in the Newsela article it said, “These symptoms include fidgeting, difficulty playing quietly or waiting for a turn and blurting out answers in class.” That is some of the features of people that have ADHD, and in school Percy often starts blurting out answers in class and to other people, in page 5 Percy said, “ Will you shut up!?!?!?!”– It came out louder than I meant.” He was shouting at Nancy. Also, people that have ADHD like to walk outside, so Percy should also ask his teachers to let him go outside more often. A positive relationship could help Percy with his health, in page 32-33 Percy said, “My mother can make me feel good just by walking into the room.” and in the Newsela article researchers said, “According to research by psychologist Sheldon Cohen, college students who reported having strong relationships were half as likely to catch a common cold.” Sometimes Percy would get homesick, he could write some letters “Feelings of sadness and disappointment may arise if dear friends live far away. However old- fashioned letter writing can be one way to reconnect.”  If he missed his friends and family’s writing a letter could be a good way to reconnect with them. At last, ADHD and Positive relationship impacted to Percy’s choices.
