Formal Elements

1. Explain what the phrase Formal Elements means in photography.

Formal elements are things used to create a piece of artwork. Which includes line, shape, space, focus, tone, texture, pattern, color, and composition. They are frequently used together, and the way the photographer organizes them determines what the final piece would look like.

2. Describe each of the 6 elements discussed so far (line, shape, pattern, texture, tone, focus)

  • line: lines could be straight, curved, or a combination of the two. They are also used vertically, horizontally, or anywhere between. Having lines could sometimes give the picture better formatting, to create visual interest and powerful effects.
  • shape:  Shapes can create contrast between the subject and their environment. Therefore, shapes is something used often in photography.
  • pattern: Pattern can always be used in photography, and it includes shapes, colors, or textures.  Patterns tend to draw a viewer’s attention more to the picture.
  • texture: Texture could create depth in a photo and make the object or image feel like it is popping/standing out(3d).
  • tone: Tone is essential to better present your feelings and emotions to viewers. For instants, having a dark tone would show viewers something more lowkey, while something that is highkey would be, bright. Therefore, controlling the tone of a picture would be very important.
  • focus: Focus can be used to highlight your object and grab the viewer’s attention, helping viewers focus on the main object and eliminate other less important elements in the picture.  Give an example that emphasizes each element
  • 3. Can an image show just one element at a time? Justify your answer.

There may be images with just one element, however, most of the time it could be pretty difficult to find a picture with only one element.

For example, the picture on the right. Looking at this picture the first element that I see is a pattern. However, in most circumstances when there are patterns there are also lines, besides that in this image shapes, colors, and textures are all included. After first noticing the pattern we expand the details of the image and observe further elements in the photo. Therefore, I believe that most image shows more than one element.

4. Give an example that emphasizes each element.

  • line: line of thirds? horizontal lines? verticle lines?
  • shape: what can the shape represent? if there is more than one shape, how can each shape relate to the other?
  • pattern: what is the use of pattern in a photo. Why should patterns be used?
  • texture: how could you best present the texture? how can you make the texture look just the way you feel it.(touch it)
  • value/tone: how does the tone of the picture present emotions?
  • focus: what objects are in focus? why are they focused? if something or some object is blured, why?

A Brief History of Abstract Photography

1. How can photography change our relationship with things?

Photography captures something in our life, for instants, the mood, feelings, and emotions. It is not only essential to create a qualitative picture but a picture that tells a story shown to viewers.

2. What is pictorialism?

Pictorialism is a category of pictures dominated during the 19th to 20th century, pictorialism makes a picture more like a painting, documentation of reality.

3. What is abstract photography?

Abstract photography is something expressing ideas and emotions without having to create something. They are usually something that is around us in reality. Based on the object having a structural design with different features and creative perspectives; perspectives that people normally would not observe or notice. Therefore, having things like balancing proportions, shapes, and colors is essential.  They tend to be things that don’t have an immediate association with the physical world.

4. Write a (very) short biography of Albert Renger-Patzsch (just 1 or 2 sentences).

Albert Renger-Patzsch was one of the most influential photographers. He was born in Germany, in June 1897 and started learning photography at the age of 12. He was one of the leading proponents of the German New Objectivism, whose work embodied the “New Objectivity” aesthetic that prevailed in German art during the Weimar Republic.

5. From looking at his images above, What types of subjects do you think Albert Renger-Patzsch preferred to photograph?

In his pictures, he used many formal elements, textures, lines, and lights. And the different perspectives he had towards different objects in reality.

6. Why do you think he entitled his famous book, ‘The World is Beautiful’?

“The World is Beautiful” , its images were based on the New Objectivity, in 1928. He was superficial interested in cataloging the forms of the objects that inhabit our world through his pictures. In “The World is Beautiful” all pictures are black and white.

7. Why do you think Edward Weston moved away from the soft focus of pictorialism to the new Straight photography movement? – the idea that ordinary objects and scenes can be photographed to reveal their beauty

Using the new Straight photography movement, using ordinary objects and scenes could better express his feelings to the viewer through the things in life, it would be more preferred because viewers could also take the opportunity to bring connections from their life that connects with his photo; may give viewers a better idea of the photo.

8. Give examples of one of his pictorialist images and one of his straight images.

The image on the left side is an example of his straight image, and the one on the right side is an example of his pictorialist images.

9. How has Aaron Siskind (above been influenced by the Straight Photography Movement

This allows him to better stimulate the ideas he wants to express to viewers.

10. Name some other photographers that have been influenced by a straight photograph.

Henry Frederick Evans, Edward Weston, Walker Evens

11. What makes the work of Andreas Gursky and Uta Barth abstract. Are they straight photographers? Why?

Andreas Gursky has taken photos with large format architecture and landscape color photographs. He is a straight photographer because his photos are taken and referred to in a scene with later digital processes.

Uta Barth is mainly experienced with photographic abstraction, and her photos are overall pretty simple with a soft focus point; doesn’t have a clear focal point most of the time.  Therefore, she is not considered a straight photographer.

Abstraction

Abstract photography is something expressing ideas and emotions without having to create something. They are usually something that is around us in reality. Based on the object having a structural design with different features and creative perspectives; perspectives that people normally would not observe/notice. Therefore, having things like balancing proportions, shapes, and colors is essential.  They tend to be things that don’t have an immediate association with the physical world.

Context in Photography

How is context important in Photography? Reference the picture above in your answer.

Context is important in photography because it is the main purpose of a photo, you should be able to express somethings feelings from a photo from using context. Context sets the tone in a picture, and when focused on creating relevant and consistent visual would be benificial for using a photo to tell a story or for readers to understand better of what the prodcuer of the photo is trying to express. Photographers should be able to convey these things withought having to explain themselves to the viewer.

Behind the scenes

How do theatre-makers think like designers?

  • I think that they should really get to know the characters, by knowing the characters more it would be much easier for a designer to design their costume, even more, they should try thinking like the characters and actually getting into the role.

Found poem-Tuesday of the other June

This found poem was created by the words of “Tuesday of the other June.”

In this story there are two main characters both called June. (To distinguish them one of them is called the other June) June was having an external conflict, character vs character with the other June. When they first met and knew they had same names both were very shocked and unhappy, so named each other mean nicknames “fish eye,” the other June even physically hurt June, However June could not do anything about the other Junes bullying because her mom told her not to get in trouble, therefor he did not want to betray her mom’s words. Later in the story June and her family was moved to another street, June was extremely excited about this move, he thought this move would make her stay away from seeing the other June. However, once she got to school in class, she saw the other June in the same school has her, now not only during swimming class would she see the other June, she would see the other June every day and everyday was going to be an awful day for June. One day morning when June got in class the other June was starting to bully her again, it said, “She frisked down the aisle stabbing the pencils in the air toward me.” then June finally said “NO!” June betrayed her mother’s words, because he really did not want to get bullied by the other June anymore, June pushed away the other June’s hands that were holding the pencil. This is also another part where they happened to have an external conflict between the two characters, physically and mentally. Therefor I chose this part from line 85-94 where the two characters had and external conflict, it really symbolized what an external conflict meant, and gave sufficient evidence from the two characters’ behaviors.

Leather Project

For our last design project this year, we were given one piece of leather to make something that will fix our problem.

My problem was that I don’t have a place to put my lunch card, and has constantly been losing my lunch card. So to fix my problem I decided to make a wallet, that could hold my lunch card and others like cash. Throughout this unit, I learned how to sew, however, the struggles this unit was also sewing, it was really hard sewing the leather because it was really thick and took me a long time to sew it, but next time I feel like if I had more practice sewing my wallet would look neater and better to use.

Problems

my problem is that I always lose my lunch because I don’t really have a place to put my lunch card.  To fix my problem, I chose to make a small wallet, so that I could the lunch card in the wallet, and not only the lunch card sometimes if you want to charge your lunch card you could also put some money in the wallet which is very useful.

smell detector

For our second unit project, we were told to make a smell detector that could identify any kind of smell around. I got my inspiration from the remote control,  and the satellite tower. The shape was similar to the remote control however it was a lot more round than the remote because I thought that having a cylinder-shaped object would be easier to hold on to.  Also at the top of my design I got my ispriration from the satellite tower, the satellite tower was were I wanted my smell detector to collect the smell, and later it traps the smell inside the cylinder, after a while the smell would then ocme out form the display screen.  Overall I really liked my design, however it was not really detailed and if it was me I wont use the smell detector, becasue I feel like that it could of been improved more if we had more time, if I would be changing one thing I really want to change and add is to the shape, I might want to make it a little more wide and have a handle on the side of the smell detectore, so also it would be easier to hold and have more smell to trap inside. And one thing that I would keep is the satellite tower, I think it really worked well by shwoing that its where it collects the smell, and when people looked at the smell detector, many said that the first thing they noticed is the satellite tower so I would want to keep that part of my design.

lip balm trial five

reflect:

After my fourth trial, I think it was a lot better, it wasn’t as soft as my recent lip balms, however, it did not fill the tube as much. Through my peers’ feedback, they really liked my scent, and they also said that it was a lot better than last time because it wasn’t as soft.  Overall for my fourth trial, I really liked it but I would change the amount of beeswax from 1g of beeswax to 1.3g of beeswax. Because for my fourth trial it didn’t really fill up the tube and beeswax helps make the lip balm moisturizing so it won’t be that soft and wouldn’t break from the middle.  I also changed my scent, because I didn’t really like the vanilla smell as much as the lemon smell so I changed the 4drops of vanilla back to 4drops of lemon.
