1. Explain what the phrase Formal Elements means in photography.
Formal elements are things used to create a piece of artwork. Which includes line, shape, space, focus, tone, texture, pattern, color, and composition. They are frequently used together, and the way the photographer organizes them determines what the final piece would look like.
2. Describe each of the 6 elements discussed so far (line, shape, pattern, texture, tone, focus)
- line: lines could be straight, curved, or a combination of the two. They are also used vertically, horizontally, or anywhere between. Having lines could sometimes give the picture better formatting, to create visual interest and powerful effects.
- shape: Shapes can create contrast between the subject and their environment. Therefore, shapes is something used often in photography.
- pattern: Pattern can always be used in photography, and it includes shapes, colors, or textures. Patterns tend to draw a viewer’s attention more to the picture.
- texture: Texture could create depth in a photo and make the object or image feel like it is popping/standing out(3d).
- tone: Tone is essential to better present your feelings and emotions to viewers. For instants, having a dark tone would show viewers something more lowkey, while something that is highkey would be, bright. Therefore, controlling the tone of a picture would be very important.
- focus: Focus can be used to highlight your object and grab the viewer’s attention, helping viewers focus on the main object and eliminate other less important elements in the picture. Give an example that emphasizes each element
- 3. Can an image show just one element at a time? Justify your answer.
There may be images with just one element, however, most of the time it could be pretty difficult to find a picture with only one element.
For example, the picture on the right. Looking at this picture the first element that I see is a pattern. However, in most circumstances when there are patterns there are also lines, besides that in this image shapes, colors, and textures are all included. After first noticing the pattern we expand the details of the image and observe further elements in the photo. Therefore, I believe that most image shows more than one element.
4. Give an example that emphasizes each element.
- line: line of thirds? horizontal lines? verticle lines?
- shape: what can the shape represent? if there is more than one shape, how can each shape relate to the other?
- pattern: what is the use of pattern in a photo. Why should patterns be used?
- texture: how could you best present the texture? how can you make the texture look just the way you feel it.(touch it)
- value/tone: how does the tone of the picture present emotions?
- focus: what objects are in focus? why are they focused? if something or some object is blured, why?
