Food Waste Prototype Reflection

My biggest success was that I could successfully realize my idea by making a prototype. I didn’t think much about making prototypes when I was sketching, but fortunately, the effect of my final prototype was very good. At first, in my sketch, there was no handle for the part that could be opened at the top, because I neglected that point when I was sketching. Later, when making the prototype, I found that it is difficult to open without a handle. Consequently, I simply made a handle and added it to the part that can be opened.

Skills I developed include cutting cardboard. Usually I use scissors to cut the cardboard directly, but this will make the edges of the cardboard look very irregular. In order to solve this problem, I tried to use the utility knife. Then I found that the utility knife is easier to use than the scissors, and the edges of the cardboard will be more neat. At first, I was not very skilled in using the art knife, but slowly I was able to use the art knife skillfully and quickly cut out the cardboard I needed.

Something I’d like to change about my prototype is the material. Because of the covid, we switched to online classes, which leads me not to have so many choices of materials and tools as in school. Because there was no glue or hot glue at home, I had to use tape to connect different cardboards, which makes my prototype not so good in appearance. Therefore, I think if we can learn this unit in Design Lab, I can make my prototype better.

Overall, I think my prototype was a success because although it is not perfect in some aspects, it is a thing I personally made during the covid. I only use the materials I can find around me. Even though it is not easy, I think it is a very good thing I can do within a limited range.
