Green Selection
For the Green Selection, I chose photographs that aligned with the topic of this unit and my vision. To begin with, these photos all include a window reflection, which aligns with this unit’s topic. Moreover, they aligned with my vision of the world’s novelty. By having unique compositions, these photographs present a new perspective to look at our daily lives. In addition, it also explored the relationship between the city and people since most of the pictures were taken at a shopping mall.
Yellow Selection
Based on the green selection, photographs in the yellow selection were the pictures that mostly aligned with Saul Leiter’s style. The use of natural framing is the most essential feature in Saul Leiter’s works. Therefore, the images in the yellow selection also have a unique composition. For instance, in the first five images, the reflection of people is in the foreground, and the people inside the window are in the background. These two layers overlap, and the reflection of people in the foreground becomes the frame of the people in the background, drawing viewers’ attention to the main object in these images—the people in the background. As a result, these photos were the best ones adapted to Saul Leiter’s style.
Red Selection
For the red selection, I chose photographs that best represent my vision and Saul Leiter’s style. They have different layers that integrate with each other well, making them seem like in one layer. This provide an interesting visual effect that can confuse the viewers’ sight, but also can evoke the viewers’ interest about the photos. Moreover, the confusion caused by the integration of different layers can make the viewers to reconsider about the world we live in. The unusual perspective presented in these photographs allows to the audience to view the world in a new perspective and intrigue their consideration about the content in the image, which aligned with my vision—finding the world’s novelty and exploring the relationship between the city and people. Furthermore, these photographs aligned with Saul Leiter’s style because the integration of foreground and background in them shows the use of natural framing, the most ionic feature in Saul Leiter’s works. For instance, the red color in two of the photographs draw the viewers’ attention to the main object in the image, the black figures of the people inside the window.
