Can you imagine having ADHD, not having enough confidence, a bad attitude towards school, and always getting distracted in class? This is what Percy Jackson faced in the book “Percy Jackson and the Olympians.” Percy has a hard time focusing at school and gaining more self-confidence.
Even though Percy doesn’t study hard at school, but he wants to at least try to make his grade stay the same. Percy has bad grades, his grades are still slipping, and he is not confident in himself. But there are ways that he can improve his grades and get better confidence such as believing in his ability to improve and choosing his study environment wisely. I think Percy could focus on studying more and listening better in class instead of listening to music when the teacher is teaching their class.
Also, the book said: “My grades slipped from Ds to Fs”. This quote shows that Percy does pretty bad at school and he doesn’t seem to care about why his grades are slipping or how to get his grades better.
The article “How to focus on studying” says that if you reframe your negative thoughts on studying, you can focus and study better. It said: “Negative thoughts make studying all but impossible. If you find yourself frequently repeating self-defeating thoughts, try reframing them into more positive statements”. Reframing negative thoughts into positive thoughts can be thinking it in another way. When Percy is in class, instead of hating it and thinking the class is boring, he should change his mind and start to think even though this class isn’t my favorite, I should still try my best to do better.
Percy Jackson needs to believe in his ability to improve. According to Ted-Ed, if you are looking for a long-term change, you need to consider the way you think about your ability and talents. If you have a fixed mindset, you would easily give up because you think you discovered something, you’re not good at. But if you have a growth mindset, you will think a challenge is 0do get stronger and grow with study and practice. It also turns out, people that who have a growth mindset are more successful, getting better grades, and doing better in the face of challenges. Percy Jackson thinks that he can’t do things well or can’t improve himself. Percy has a fixed mindset on things so that is also why he doesn’t try hard.
On page 7 it said: “But Mr. Brunner expected me to be as good as everybody else, despite the fact that I have dyslexia and attention deficit disorder and I had never made above a C- in my life.” This quote shows that Percy is admitting that he doesn’t study well in school, but part of the reason is that he doesn’t study hard, not all because of dyslexia. He wants to say that he can’t get good grades because he has dyslexia, not because he doesn’t try.
Sometimes In my life, I would lose confidence in things that I don’t do as well. Instead of changing his study habits, Percy also needs to be more confident in himself. For example: “What was so great about me? A dyslexic, hyperactive boy with a D+ report card, kicked out of school for the sixth time in six years.” According to this quote from page 38, we can see that Percy doesn’t do that well at school, and also doesn’t believe in himself. He can only find things that he doesn’t do well, instead of looking at the things he does do well.
In conclusion, if Percy works on gaining more confidence in himself, and believes in himself, he could improve his grades fast, and also gain confidence. If he gains confidence, he would study harder and focus better in class.
I love how you took quotes and made them very specific. For example, you would state a quote either from the book or the story and explain clearly what the quote means and what it is trying to say. My mind is very clear and not confused about what you are saying. I also loved how you said some of your own experiences and how you got through the problem very clearly. My thinking is that your title stated self-confidence and study habits but you didn’t really state anything about studying habits. So, maybe next time you can add a bit more on studying habits and not too much on self-confidence.
